Recap / I Carly S 01 Ep 15 I Hate Sams Boyfriend

Go To

iHate Sam's Boyfriend is the 15th episode of the 1st season of iCarly.

Sam becomes so attached to her new boyfriend Jonah that she constantly misses rehearsals, but Carly discovers there's more to him than meets the eye.

Meanwhile, Spencer creates a stop-motion movie.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Sometimes, being a good friend means letting them know things that will hurt them.
  • Big "OMG!": By Spencer after Jonah ruins his movie.
  • Blatant Lies: After Jonah leaves the apartment being his typical smug self, Sam asks if he isn't great or what. Carly, Freddie, and Spencer say yes through gritted teeth, when in reality they can't stand him.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Jonah claims at iCarly's rehearsal that Carly and Freddie won't even realize he’s there. However, he then proceeds to make loud comments about their work, calls one of their skits lame, and suggests that Carly improve her acting ability.
  • Jerkass: Jonah, big time. He gives people wedgies, bosses Carly and Freddie around as if it's his business, steals their food even though it was rightly theirs, and doesn't show any sympathy towards Spencer when he is miserable over his ruined project (that Jonah ruined by damaging one of the main characters). When he comes onto Carly and she shoots him down, he initially manipulates her into silence, knowing how much the truth will hurt Sam.
  • No Sympathy: Jonah shows no remorse for ruining Spencer's movie.
  • Plot Twist: It turns out that Jonah wasn't pursuing a relationship with Sam, he was only using her to get close to Carly.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Sam and Jonah, to the point where they make romantic jokes and text to each other nonstop, which annoy Carly and Freddie greatly.
  • Spanner in the Works: In-Universe, Spencer's movie comes out as only about 20 seconds long instead of the intended ten minutes, and it would've been longer had not Jonah ruined everything by tearing off the alien's arm.
  • Stop Motion: Spencer's movie is made this way.
  • A Taste Of His Own Medicine: Jonah is a bully at school who gives other students wedgies. At the end, he's given a huge wedgie and is left dangling for hours (yes, all on live cam) to the point he tries apologizing and asking theiCarly crew for forgiveness.
  • Uncool Undies: Could apply to Jonah. He acts cooler than everybody else by behaving like a jerk to all of Sam's friends, attempting to cheat on Sam with Carly, and bullying other kids by giving them wedgies. However, at the end of the episode when Sam and Carly decide to give him a wedgie with the "Wedgie Bounce," it is revealed that Jonah wears tighty-whities, a decidedly uncool type of underwear.
  • Verbal Backspace: When Carly tells Freddie in private that Jonah tried to kiss her, Freddie is outraged and says, "No one tries to kiss my girl!" Carly glares at him, causing him to amend the statement with "No one tries to kiss you!"
  • Wedgie: At the end of the episode, Jonah is hooked up to the "Wedgie Bounce" machine by hooking a rope to the back of his tighty-whities and hoisting him up in the air, successfully giving him a hanging wedgie. This is done as revenge after he tries to kiss Carly while he is going out with Sam.
