Recap / I Carly S 01 Ep 14 I Heart Art

Go To

iHeart Art is the 14th episode in the 1st season of iCarly.

Spencer gets a visit from his art idol, Harry Joyner, to take a look at his work but when he gives a bad review, it causes Spencer to fall into depression. Carly, Sam and Freddie must help him regain his confidence.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Don't hinge your self-worth on the opinions of one person, especially if that person's opinion is motivated by jealousy.
  • Babysitter from Hell: Mrs. Benson is this when looking after Carly while Spencer is away at his new job. She forbids Carly from watching any of the TV channels that she likes, and doesn't allow her to use forks when eating for fear of "stabbing [her] tongue". Carly even remarks to Sam in private that it's a wonder how how Freddie can live with her.
  • The Bet: Carly makes Sam take a bet that she can’t insult Freddie once for a week. And if she does, she must give him $5. Freddie delights in this, taunting Sam whenever he can to make her cave in, which works at the end of the episode.
  • Brick Joke: As part of his taunting towards Sam, Freddie tells her that he has to sign a waiver with his mother to confirm he shampoos twice when bathing. And later, Mrs. Benson comes to Freddie saying that he hasn't signed a waiver, so she doesn't know if he shampooed twice.
Freddie: And you thought I was kidding.
  • Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere: When Sam makes The Bet, she at first thinks it would be easy. But then Freddie starts taunting her at many times so he could get money off of her, and to get back at her for treating him like garbage many times. At the end of the episode after gaining $40 from Spencer, Sam immediately gives it all to Freddie while insulting him in the process, finally getting it out of her system.
  • Heroic BSoD: Spencer falls into this when Harry deems his artwork "not great".
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Harry is horrified to learn that his (dishonest) criticisms of Spencer's work have made Spencer quit art and start a more technical job as a dental hygienist. Harry arrives at the dentist's room to tell Spencer the truth that he was jealous of what Spencer made and successfully convinces him to continue being a sculptor.
  • The Reveal: Turns out Harry gave Spencer's artwork a bad review because he was jealous of his work, which turned out even better than his. This gives Spencer his confidence back.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Carly is highly incredulous that not only is Spencer taking a job as a dentist's assistant, which is very different than his art career, but that he's also leaving her in the care of Mrs. Benson while he’s away.
