Recap / iCarly (2021) S1E4 "iGot Your Back"

Go To

After enlisting Harper's help for a red-carpet event, Carly starts to doubt that Harper understands her best interests and questions their friendship. Meanwhile, Spencer goes to extraordinary lengths to get Freddie his first post-divorce date.

Tropes:

  • 419 Scam: Spencer tells Freddie that the delivery girl is interested in dating him, hence why she wanted his phone number. Freddie responds "So did that Nigerian Prince."
  • Continuity Nod: One of Carly's potential outfits for the fashion show is the dress she wore to her father-daughter dance in "iGoodbye". This is the outfit that she chooses to wear to the show, with Harper modifying it by adding a longer skirt. It doesn't go too well (see Wardrobe Malfunction below.)
  • Double-Meaning Title: When the back of Carly's dress rips, Harper gets behind her and covers it. In other words, she figuratively and literally has Carly's back.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: When Carly complains to Spencer about Harper having set her up with a hot, dumb guy, Spencer responds that that is her type: all of her previous boyfriends have been "Pretty in the face-a, empty in la cabeza". While this is not entirely accurate (see Informed Flaw below), he's right that Carly doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to dating and that she tends to prioritize looks over character.
  • Feud Episode: Carly gets angry at Harper for being a hard ass during her fittings as well as setting her up on a date with a handsome idiot. The two have an argument but end up reconciling at the end.
  • Flipping the Table: Carly does this following her fight with Harper. The table in question had several dresses on it.
  • Idiot Ball:
    • Freddie grabs it big time. First, he thinks that the Post Rabbit delivery girl who wants his phone number is trying to steal his identity (which Spencer calls him out on). Second, he doesn't realize that "Ramona" is not who she says she is despite her obviously not being smart enough to be a nuclear physicist and always leaving exactly one hour into the date.
    • Spencer tries to set Freddie up with his nuclear physicist friend Ramona, but she isn't interested. Believing that the rejection will put him off dating for good, he goes onto Post Rabbit and hires an "actress" for $500 an hour to pretend to be Ramona and date Freddie. He doesn't realize that the woman is a prostitute until Carly points out that the app he's on isn't even Post Rabbit, it's called "Eager Bunny" and is a site for hiring sex workers. Spencer's not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, but this is imbecilic even for him.
  • Informed Flaw: Carly gets angry at Harper for setting her up on a date with a Dumb Muscle guy. When venting about it to Spencer, he says that the reason Harper may have thought this man was a good match for Carly is because all of Carly's past boyfriends have been stupid, but hot, guys. While this seems to be true regarding the guys she's dated in the revival so far, it is not the case for her love interests in the original iCarly. She didn't have much luck with boyfriends, but it's because they all either had odd quirks that turned her off (i.e. Griffin's obsession with "Pee-Wee Babies", Justin's bad poetry) or turned out to be jerks (i.e. Steven from "iParty with Victorious" dating Carly and Tori Vega simultaneously, Trey from "iPear Store" trying to force himself onto her). Few, if any of them were outright stupid, with Cort from "iHire an Idiot" perhaps being the sole exception, and Carly never actually went on a date with him. In fact, Kyle from "iQ" was quite intelligent, if not a genius.
  • No Name Given: We never find out the real name of the prostitute who poses as Spencer's friend Ramona. In the credits, she's listed as "Framona" (Fake Ramona).
  • Not So Above It All: Millicent looks down on Carly and Harper for their love of a rather trashy reality show. Though she ends up getting sucked into watching it anyway.
  • Platonic Prostitution: Spencer unknowingly hires a prostitute to date Freddie (Spencer thinks she's an actress at first), but Freddie breaks things off after a few dates, never figures out that she's a sex worker and (as far as we know, at least) never had sex with her because he's more interested in intellectual connection than physical attraction.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: From this episode on, Millicent is much nicer to Freddie.
  • True Beauty Is on the Inside: Freddie seems to hold this view, as he expressed no interest in dating Spencer's friend (even saying that "looks fade" when Spencer tells him she's beautiful.) until he found out that she was a nuclear physicist. Given that he's been through two failed marriages, he's probably learned that lesson through experience (Though "iLove Gwen" reveals that his second ex-wife is a marine biologist, so Freddie clearly has a thing for successful women). Too bad Ramona didn't hold the same views, as she declined the date when Spencer showed her a photo of Freddie, resulting in Spencer paying a sex worker to pretend to be her.
  • Wardrobe Malfunction: The dress that Carly wears to the fashion show begins to rip apart because the stitches are temporary and Harper never did a proper fitting. Harper has to stand behind Carly and drape herself over her in order to cover up the damage.
