Recap / Hell Girl S 2 E 22 Longing

Go To

The story is focused back on Takuma again, first introduced in Episode 14. After the recent tragedies that have occurred in his family, Takuma is suspected of having murdered his mother and gravely wounded his father, but has not been arrested due to the lack of evidence. The townspeople continue to suspect him, and call him the "devil's child." As Takuma tries to piece his life back together, he meets a young girl, Seri, who happened to live near him before her house was torn down to make way for a train station that never materialized. Having been emotionally attached to the house, she intends to have her revenge against at least one of the persons who had ordered her house's destruction in the first place. After selecting her target, Mr. Hasue, she deliberately gets into a relationship with him and blackmails him after he realizes that she is a minor. Although she intends to extort a large sum of cash from him, his wife has other plans in mind. She pulls the red string on the doll, before she hears motor crash outside, which means Seri has been sent to Hell. Meanwhile, Takuma encounters Kikuri. Kikuri tells him that Jigoku Shoujo is there, answering his previous question to him which she has left ignored after being stopped by Ai at Takuma's house before. However, Jigoku Shoujo is not after him. When Takuma realises who the victim is, he rushes after Seri, but Takuma is too late to save her. The next scene showes up, showing Ai is rowing the boat to the hell. Seri is seen to beg Ren and Ai to be returned to the mortal world, but the boat has already passed into Hell's Gate. The episode ends with Takuma crying near Seri's motorcycle.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Seri begs Ichimokuren to turn the boat around as she's being ferried to Hell.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Picking up from the events of Episode 14, the people in Lovely Hills continue to shun Takuma because of the accusations against him.
  • Asshole Victim: Deconstructed. Unlike some wrongly sent victims of the Hell Correspondence, Seri wasn't wholly innocent, as she blackmailed someone over a petty grudge that she couldn't let go of. Even still, she was a nice person that treated Takuma like a human in a community that otherwise shunned him and didn't deserve to be sent to Hell.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Seri, who desperately wants to leave Lovely Hills, is finally able to in the form of being sent to Hell, an even worse place from which she will never be able to escape.
  • Blackmail: Seri, a minor, tricks Hasue, an adult, into going on a date with her and uses it as blackmail material so that he'll send her enough money to leave Lovely Hills.
  • Cassandra Truth: No one believes Takuma when he tries to tell them that he didn't murder his mother and injure his father.
  • Downer Ending: Seri is sent to Hell by Hasue's wife, leaving Takuma alone in the world once again. The episode ends with Takuma gazing mournfully at the frog keychain Seri had given him earlier while rain pours down on him.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Seri, though the viewers only get to see the aftermath of it.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Seri isn't tortured on the way to Hell and Ichimokuren appears to take pity on her.
  • Hope Spot: Takuma appears to change Seri's mind about blackmailing Hasue and attempting to leave Lovely Hills, and they part amicably. Then Kikuri shows up and tells him he's not the one whose name was entered into the Hell Correspondence, causing Takuma to have an Oh, Crap! moment when he realizes that Seri is about to be sent to Hell.
  • Irony: Seri's fate, depending on how you look at it. She blackmailed Hasue into giving her enough money to leave Lovely Hills, an action that gets her sent to Hell by Hasue's wife. She technically got what she wanted in the end, but now she's stuck in an even worse place that she will never be able to leave.
  • Men Can't Keep House: Takuma's house is filthy when he brings Seri over. Justified, as he's a child that isn't used to living on his own.
  • Minor Living Alone: Takuma is still a child but is forced to live on his own while his father is recovering in the hospital.
  • Nice Girl: While she isn't above blackmail as a form of revenge, Seri is otherwise a pleasant girl that treats Takuma like a person in spite of all the rumors floating around about him.
  • Oh, Crap!: Takuma has this moment when he realizes that Seri is about to be sent to Hell.
  • Older Than They Look: Seri is stated to be a minor but looks mature enough to pass as 18 or older. She uses this to her advantage to trick Hasue into going on a date with her.
  • Red Herring: Takuma himself is one due to the whole episode taking place from his perspective. Ai and her crew begin to hang around Takuma again, signaling to him that someone has used the Hell Correspondence. Given how everyone in Lovely Hills has been treating him, Takuma and the viewer assume that someone has entered his name. However, Ai and her crew were really watching over Seri, who just happened to befriend Takuma at the same time that they were investigating her.
  • Revenge: After finding out that Hasue worked for the construction company that tore down her house, Seri blackmails him into giving her money as a part of her revenge plot. It's this action that gets her sent to Hell in the end.
  • Ship Tease: Between Takuma and Seri, the first person to show him kindness since his mother died and his father was hospitalized. It doesn't last as she's sent to Hell by the end of the episode.
