Tropes

  • Becoming the Mask: Lazlo Valentin admits he really "got into character" as Professor Pyg.
  • Cruel Mercy: Falcone tells Gordon it's for the better that he lives with all the mistakes he's made, beginning with Mario's death.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: During their scuffle, Alfred was trying to only subdue Bruce; however, when Bruce hit him with a cheap shot to the head, Alfred's SAS training took over and he laid Bruce out, giving him a visible wound. Bruce later threatens to tell the police and "show them my face."
  • Downer Ending: Jim is now being blackmailed into working for Sofia while living with the guilt of inadvertently helping her. Bruce fires Alfred. Penguin is now poised to ally with Jerome. Ed is in danger of becoming The Riddler again.
  • The Dreaded: It's obvious that even after his time away, Carmine is one of the most feared names in the Gotham underworld and his word carries huge influence.
Gordon: I made the same deal. He didn't keep it.
    Carmine: He will with me.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Grundy finds Ed smashing a mirror carrying the Riddler reflection.
    Grundy: Ed angry at mirror?
    Ed: No!
    Grundy: Ed...angry at Ed?
    Ed: That...is impressively perceptive.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Penguin's men abandon him when they think he's killed Martin.
  • Evil Laugh: How Oswald realizes who he's next door to.
  • Flat "What": Barbara, when she learned Sofia slept with Gordon.
  • He Knows Too Much: Sofia takes out Pyg herself to ensure Gordon can't get him to confess how Sofia was backing him up.
  • History Repeats: Oswald winds up in Arkham once again, a major mob boss has died (Carmine Falcone instead of Salvatore Maroni this time, both at the hands of "third parties"), Ed is being tormented by his Riddler persona, Alfred gets fired for trying to help Bruce, and the Sirens regain possession of their old club.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Oswald ends up arrested, not for Carmine's murder but rather for Martin's. Oswald laughs and tells Victor to explain how they faked his death. However, Victor is ticked at Oswald having just chewed him out for his foolishness, and so tells Gordon that Penguin blew the boy up for real. Thus, Oswald is thrown in jail for a murder that never even happened and no one believes his claims of innocence.
  • Lock-and-Load Montage: The GCPD has one right before they go to war with Penguin.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Sofia Falcone has been playing everyone like a fiddle from the day she came to Gotham and it's worked brilliantly.
  • Mythology Gag: Sofia is in a wheelchair and a neck brace from the attack but is actually fine. This is much like in Dark Victory where it turns out she was faking being paralyzed to cover her crimes.
    • Probably due to having his face removed and then reattached, Jerome now sports his comic counterpart's rictus grin.
  • Not Me This Time: Even Zsasz thinks Oswald had Falcone killed. Oswald says it wasn't him, but is happy to let people think it was to enhance his reputation. This bites him later on when he's arrested for the one murder he didn't commit.
  • Obfuscating Disability: Sofia turns out not to need the wheelchair or her neck brace.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Sofia's face when she gets the call about her dad being in town.
    • The reaction of the Sirens when it turns out Carmine is now backing Oswald.
    • Oswald, when he realizes he's now in the next cell over from Jerome.
    • Gordon, when he realizes Sofia set him up from the start.
  • Professional Killer: Turns out, Pyg was working for Sofia all along.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Sofia gives one to Gordon, about how he wouldn't accept Penguin's criminal licenses and asked for a (former) crime boss to help bring things back to the way they were.
  • The Reveal:
    • Sofia knew all along that Martin was alive and Zsasz has been working for her.
    • It turns out Sofia set Pyg up to kill cops just to rile Jim up as part of her plan.
  • Revenge: Sofia doesn't forgive Gordon for killing her brother.
  • Rousing Speech: Gordon gives one to the GCPD after they kick Penguin out.
"From the first day I put on the badge, I was told things could never change. Gotham was corrupt. GCPD was corrupt. Criminals and lowlives ran things. You just showed me differently. Penguin will be coming. It's time we showed Gotham who we are. Suit up!"
  • Self-Made Orphan: Sofia had her father shot because he refused to give his blessing for everything she's done for the family.
  • Spanner in the Works: Everything that happened was orchestrated by Sofia or worked to her advantage.
  • Split-Personality Merge: Inverted; being unfrozen has separated Ed from the Riddler persona, putting the two in conflict again.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Bruce took a BIGGER level in jerkass after Alfred instinctively punched him in the face instead of just subduing him.
  • The Tragic Rose: Right before Carmine was shot, Sofia wanted to pick a rose and pricked her finger.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: It was Gordon visiting Carmine and Sofia that gave her the idea to control Gotham.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Gordon.
  • Villain Has a Point: As it turns out, Falcone was 100% right about his final assessment of Gordon— despite his good intentions, his actions, up to and including coming to Falcone for help, have only done more harm than good for Gotham.
    • After shutting down the Penguin's entire operation, James warns Sofia not to attempt to take over. Sofia then points out that was the whole reason why he went to her father in the first place was to have the Falcones come back to Gotham and reestablish the traditional order in crime.
  • Villain Respect:
    • At Falcone's funeral, Zsasz pops a bullet out of his gun and puts it into the coffin. It's as close to humanity as we've ever seen from him.
    • Oswald actually seems heart-felt thanking Carmine at his funeral for his past help. When Jim rolls Sofia away, a pair of the Penguin's goons stand before them; Oswald tells them "not here."
  • Villain Team-Up: The episode ends with Jerome proposing one to Penguin.
  • Water Wake Up:
    • Alfred pours an ice bucket's contents onto Bruce and his two female friends to wake them up.
    • Tabitha later does this to Grundy.
  • Wham Line:
    • Bruce telling Alfred he is no longer Bruce's legal guardian.
Bruce: Alfred, you're fired. Now get the hell out of my house.
    • "The Riddler" persona realizing why Ed is resisting him:
Riddler: You're in love with Lee Tompkins, you pathetic loser.
  • Wham Shot:
    • Pyg shows up as Sofia's ally.
    • Oswald discovers his next door cellmate is Jerome.
    • Butch remembers.
  • Wine Is Classy: Alfred find Bruce partying once more, and tries to wake him up. He goes for a wine bottle, but first reads the label before using it to wake up Bruce. Judging by his reluctance and reaction, the wine in question is pretty old. He opts for a water bucket instead.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Falcone basically tells Gordon "I told you so" in regards to his reckless actions since they last met.
  • Would Hit a Girl: When Sofia snarls that "Gotham is mine," Carmine slaps her across the face.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit:
    • Sofia ensures she was wounded (but not too badly) in the shooting to make it look like she was a victim rather than the one who put out the hit. As it turns out, she's perfectly fine.
    • Bruce plans to show his bruised face to the police if Alfred doesn't leave before he returns.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Sofia kills Professor Pyg.
