Tropes

  • Bilingual Bonus: Mrs. Kim speaks Korean to Lane.
  • Blatant Lies: Christopher tells Lorelai the plane to Paris leaves three hours before it does so she'll be on time.
  • Captain Obvious: Mrs. Kim points out that it's reckless to leave a key under the doormat.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Zach thinks Lane must be freaking out at the twins being conjoined, since just having twins isn't reason enough.
    • Lorelai thinks it's only reasonable for Europe to switch to an American timezone, since America switched to the metric system. Chris starts to point out that they didn't switch to metric, but lets it go.
  • Continuity Nod: Chris mentions that when they were younger, they talked about traveling to Paris and sleeping on park benches, which happened in a flashback in season three, episode thirteen.
  • Elopement: Christopher and Lorelai get married in Paris with no family or friends present.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Rory highlights her hair pink when she doesn't know what she's going to do with her life.
  • Girl Group: Olivia and Lucy want to start a Norwegian girlband.
  • A Good Name for a Rock Band: Olivia suggests The Forbidden Fjords for their Norwegian girl band.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Lorelai claims Gigi won't absorb any French rudeness because she has an impenetrable coat of sweetness around her.
  • Meaningful Echo: Zach's "cool" to Mrs. Kim's decision to move in with them is also Lane's response to Mrs. Kim's acceptance of their request for her not to move in with them.
  • Product Placement: Lorelai thinks Chris shouldn't have named his daughter G.G., but M&M.
  • Shout-Out
    • Zach wants to use the ultrasound photo as album cover, like a "prenatal Nevermind".
    • Chris isn't asking anyone to take a picture of him in front of Jim Morrison's grave.
    • "Purple Rain" keeps Lorelai up at night, though it only plays in her head.
    • The baguette guy they run into references Everybody Loves Raymond as evidence Americans are funny.
    • Zach means that they're young adults, not that he's gonna smoke a pipe and Lane is gonna watch 60 Minutes.
    • Lorelai wonders if Chris means that they'll always have Paris.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Downplayed. Christopher hires a restaurant staff to serve him and Lorelai in the middle of the night, which is not exactly illegal, but some unions may frown on it.
  • Stealth Insult: Played with. Paris thanks Rory for being the only person with integrity among a staffroom of backstabbers, while in the staffroom with the rest of the staff.
  • Stop Being Stereotypical: Discussed. Chris hopes Gigi doesn't absorb any French rudeness.
  • Verbal Tic: Zach claims he only said "cool" to Mrs. Kim because of this.
  • The X of Y: Chris calls Paris "the Phoenix of Europe". Referring to Phoenix, Arizona, of course. Paris has a few nicknames, but has never been called a mythical firebird.
