We've Got Magic To Do

Sookie's stove caught fire. Lorelai starts to think it's some karmic thing about her. The women at the D.A.R. are having trouble filling tables for a function. They let Rory come up with ideas. Lorelai goes to some musical show where Miss Patty has trained kids to toss glitter at the audience and Luke ends up going camping instead because Lorelai doesn't think he'd enjoy it. Shira and Mitchum Huntsberger and her friends crash Rory's party.

Rory's assistant: Lacey Boscombe.

Tropes:

  • Brutal Honesty: Richard confronts Mitchum about Rory, and Mitchum doesn't try very hard to spare his feelings.
  • Call-Back: Back in season five, Lorelai changed insurance company to her father's. This episode, Lorelai has to contact him for a claim related to the oven fire.
  • Captain Oblivious: Paris doesn't see the obvious solution to being broke. Rory explains it to her. (It's getting a job.)
  • Catch-22 Dilemma: Richard has to either believe that his friends were assholes to his granddaughter or that his daughter is lying and his granddaughter is depressed for no reason.
  • Everything's Better with Sparkles: The kids in Miss Patty's show throw glitter at the audience. Inverted since the adults in the audience don't exactly appreciate it.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Sookie assures everyone she is fine without an oven, lists a number of salads and carpaccios they can make without it, before she begs Lorelai to get her another oven.
  • Fee Fi Faux Pas: You can't seat a Huntzberger at the loser table even if they crash the party.
  • Gold Digger: Shira Huntzberger, who used to be a cocktail waitress.
  • Hypocrite:
    • Shira Huntzberger, whose only difference from Rory in terms of being qualified to be a Huntzberger is that she doesn't want a career.
    • Luke let Nicole talk on her phone in the diner in season four, but won't let Lorelai now that they're dating.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Dora complains that her punch is a very weak drink.
  • Mama Bear: Emily gets her grandmama bear on when she learns that Rory wasn't welcomed into Logan's family like she thought. She goes from worrying about Shira sitting at the wrong table to giving her a dressing-down that rivals the ones she usually reserves for her employees.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Richard's expression after he finds out why Rory dropped out of Yale.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Rory to the D.A.R., otherwise she'd know you can't do anything in just a week.
  • Product Placement: Anxiety pills. Paris's supposed anxiety disorder is never mentioned again.
  • Really Gets Around: Emily points out to Shira that both Logan and Mitchum do this.
  • Rich Bitch: Shira Huntzberger.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Lorelai yells "Gunga Din" because she needs water.
    • Sookie's only reget in life is that she saw Mummenschanz.
    • Nora declares that Rory is the Babe Ruth of the DAR.
    • Richard reads Samuel Beckett and finds him hard to emerge from.
    • Richard claims Rory could discuss Arthur Schopenhauer's influence on Friedrich Nietzsche when she was ten.
    • Lorelai thinks Luke should go be Grizzly Adams.
    • Richard discusses Mortimer Adler's advice that one should read each Classic a minimum of three times. He wonders if Adler himself read Euclid's Geometry three times, seeing as it's a Classic he recommended everyone read.
    • Paris learned to socialize with workers from Working Girl and Just Shoot Me! and has already quoted Wendy Malick a few times.
    • Sookie is amazed that Swan Lake is a thing Miss Patty's ballet dancers do.
    • The DAR function has a band imitating The Andrews Sisters.
    • Paris thinks T. S. Eliot was right about criticism.
    • Richard's father loved Benny Goodman and hated Glenn Miller.
    • Karl Marx comes alive to Paris when she has to get a job for one evening.
    • Paris thinks Rory is too much like Desmond Tutu.
    • Paris also thinks the Romanovs had it coming.
    • There's talk of giving Rory the Abigail Adams award for stellar party-throwing.
    • Kirk's pantomime of birth makes Lorelai think of Lucille Ball.
    • Shira loves The Beatles. She saw Paul Mccartney and she almost died.
    • Rory calls Lacey her "girl Friday".
  • Show Within a Show: Miss Patty's.
  • Squick: In-universe, Lorelai and Sookie are grossed out by Kirk's miming being born.
  • Title Drop: The intro and outro of Miss Patty's show contains the lyric "we've got magic to do".
  • Themed Party: The D.A.R. is throwing one with the theme of Hollywood Canteen.
