Recap / Full House S 8 E 01 Comets Excellent Adventure

Go To

"Comet's Excellent Adventure" is the eighth season premier in Full House.

Jesse gets fired from the Rippers early on, right as a scheduled band performance he has arranged with a client is approaching. To make matters worse, it's his turn to walk Comet. Amidst his scheduling conflicts, Michelle ends up walking Comet by herself in Jesse's place, which proves disastrous when Comet runs off at the sight of a car in the shape of a hot-dog.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Comet. It's either this or a Lower-Deck Episode.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Kimmy's self-promoting dating statement during the live broadcast of "Wake Up, San Francisco" in this episode is: "I like long walks on the beach, sunsets, and men covered with gravy."
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Technically, the "old man" is an uncle, but the trope fits otherwise: Near the end of the episode, Michelle does this to Jesse for telling her to walk Comet in his stead, resulting in Comet chasing a car that looks like a hot dog with a bun and running away.
Michelle: Why did you tell me to walk Comet by myself? What were you thinking?!
Jesse: Well, that's the problem, Michelle. I wasn't thinking.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: When Comet gets hold of a long chain of sausage links out of sheer hunger, Danny gets Comet to drop the sausage links Comet was holding by threatening to take Comet to the dog groomer that puts pink bows in his hair.
  • Dog Walks You: Michelle volunteers to take Comet out for a walk upon seeing Jesse's unwillingness to do so. Danny responds with: "You're a little too small to walk Comet. Comet will be walking you." Later in the episode, when Michelle asks Jesse to walk Comet, Jesse, who's busying himself with negotiations on the phone, tells Michelle to do it in his stead. This trope gets played with: First, Michelle has a hard time keeping up ("Comet, slow down!... What have we been feeding you?"); and then Comet runs off when a car shaped like a hot dog drives by, though Michelle isn't dragged along because her grip on the leash was loose when Comet starts running. It's still Played for Drama, though, as eventually the entire Tanner household, with Kimmy and Nelson in tow, get involved in the search.
  • Epic Fail: Jesse's attempt to be a one-man band by playing multiple instruments at once ends with his amplifier short-circuiting.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When Michelle explains to Joey through the phone about why Comet is missing, Joey asks Jesse whether he let Michelle walk Comet on her own. Jesse says "no" and proceeds to recount the scenario... only to stop himself short before finishing it, as he remembers at that moment that, yes, he did do just that.
    Jesse: I'm an idiot.
  • Get Out!: Jesse orders Joey out of the basement studio after his attempt to play multiple instruments withal ends up getting his amplifier short-circuiting in his frustration. He changes his mind once the phone rings just as he needs to fix the broken amplifier.
  • Idiot Ball: Jesse takes hold of it here when he tells Michelle to walk Comet on her own. He does acknowledge his role in the ensuing disaster later on, at least and he explains he wasn't paying attention because he was dealing with the fallout from his band firing him.
  • Ironic Echo: When Jesse's attempt at trying to be a one-man band by playing all the instruments the Rippers played ends with the wires of an amplifier short-circuiting, he blames Joey for this, saying: "I should have known! The first rule of physics: Idiots and electronics don't mix!" Shortly thereafter, once Michelle notifies Joey over the phone of Comet going missing and Jesse's role in it, Jesse, upon realizing that he gave Michelle permission to walk Comet on her own, mutters: "I'm an idiot." Right at that moment, a spark flies out of said amplifier.
  • It's All My Fault: Jesse says this as he's about to confess to Danny about his role in Comet going missing.
Jesse: Uh, before I say anything, I just want you to know upfront this whole thing was my fault.
  • Kubrick Stare: Played for Laughs. After shooting down Michelle's suggestion of herself walking Comet on her own due to Comet being much bigger than Michelle is, Danny says that the schedule he sets up dictates that Jesse is the one to walk Comet the next day and that "he's gonna do it with a smile". Jesse, who's already in a bad mood after the Rippers fired him while a scheduled band performance gig is approaching, reacts with a grimace while looking upwards at Danny.
  • Missed Him by That Much: The search for Comet gets prolonged because the searchers fail to notice Comet (with a female dog he takes a fancy to at the time after he stops his chase of the car in the shape of a hot dog short) at the most (in)opportune moments.
    • D.J., Stephanie, Michelle, and Kimmy look around and calling out Comet's name. Unfortunately for them, all four of them happen to face away from the traffic lanes, where a trolley car that Comet and the female dog are riding in at that moment drives by.
    • Shortly thereafter, Joey drives Jesse, with Nicky and Alex in tow, to Coit Tower, in the hope of finding Comet there. Jesse, however, is skeptical of Joey's judgment, and dismisses Nicky and Alex pointing at the Coit Tower. They drive away, completely missing Comet and the female dog at the top of the tower.
      Nicky and Alex: Bye bye.
  • No Sparks: After D.J.'s date with Nelson concludes early in the episode, she decides to dump him due to feeling no chemistry with him throughout the date.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Joey's logic at helping to find Comet ends up failing to convince Jesse to trust Joey's judgment when he has Jesse stop at Coit Tower.
    Joey: Hey, Jess, pull over.
Jesse: Why are we at Coit Tower?
Joey: I take Comet for walks up here. Maybe he came back. I'm just trying to think like a dog.
Jesse: The last time you did that, you bit the mailman.
    Joey: He was teasing me.
Jesse: We don't have time for that, Biscuit Brain.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: Michelle urging Jesse that it's time to walk Comet is met with Jesse telling her "not now, sweetheart" as Jesse happens to be on the phone negotiating with his client for the scheduled band performance.note
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title serves to make a reference to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, only with Comet taking center-stage in this episode.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • The episode starts with everyone looking for the remote control all over the house without success and sitting down looking at the blank TV screen. In comes Comet holding the remote control with his mouth.
    • While Danny tries to make Jesse adhere to his dog-care schedule, he says to Michelle that Jesse is "gonna do it with a smile". Jesse responds by casting a Kubrick Stare at Danny's direction instead.
    • Jesse claims that he doesn't need a band to perform in the upcoming scheduled gig and decides to test it out by playing multiple instruments at once. It ends with an amplifier short-circuiting.
    • When Jesse's attempt at playing multiple instruments at once ends with an amplifier short-circuiting, he orders Joey out of the basement studio, claiming that he doesn't need Joey anymore. The phone rings right at that moment, prompting Jesse to request Joey's help by getting the phone and answering the call while Jesse himself tries to fix the broken amplifier.
    • As Jesse is bracing himself for his confession about his role in Comet's disappearance, Danny says to him "this had better be important". Cue Jesse confessing to Danny about him giving Michelle permission to walk Comet on her own.note
    • The last example of this trope ends in a positive way. After Jesse and Michelle discuss over the events that transpired throughout the day, he promises Michelle that he'll do everything he can to to help find Comet, only to find Comet having returned home at that moment.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Danny has this feeling when Jesse is about to confess to Danny about his role in Comet going missing.
Jesse: Uh, before I say anything, I just want you to know upfront this whole thing was my fault.
Danny: I hate stories that start like that.
