Tropes

  • Call-Back: Kate recognizes Joey from the "Milk Master 2000" informercial.
  • Friendship Moment: Chandler stops Ross from interrupting Rachel and Mark, telling him she's moving on and that he has to move on, too, for his own good.
Ross: I just miss her so much.
Chandler: [pats his head] I know.
  • Funny T Shirt: The titular t-shirt is a "Frankie Say Relax" shirt that Ross has clearly grown out of.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Ross freaks over Rachel going out with Mark, accusing her of doing it immediately after they broke up. Of course, it's been three weeks, and Chandler reminds Ross that he slept with another woman three hours after thinking they were broken up.
Chandler: I mean, bullets have left guns slower!
  • Hypocrite: Chandler chews Ross out for being upset Rachel is dating a guy 3 weeks after they broke up when he slept with Chloe hours after the breakup. Never mind that it was Chandler who pushed Ross to move onto someone new despite Ross' hesitations.
  • Jerkass: Kate reacts to Joey introducing himself by asking if he's playing "one of the retarded cousins" in the play. Her attitude doesn't improve much over the subsequent rehearsals.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Ross had been exceptionally clingy and possessive of Rachel towards the end of their relationship, this episode reveals that Mark really did have feelings for Rachel and was waiting for their relationship to end so he could make his move. Turns out Ross was right all along about him.
  • Masturbation Means Sexual Frustration: Mark implies he'll be doing this after Rachel decides not to sleep with him, instead choosing to "Get back at Ross with himself".
  • Metaphorgotten: Joey is complaining about Kate.
Joey: Just because she went to Yale Drama she thinks she's the greatest actress sinceā€¦ sliced bread.
Chandler: Ah, Sliced Bread. A wonderful Lady MacBeth.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Lampshaded. Ross is hardly puny, but Chandler is openly surprised that he has the strength to drag both him and the foosball table (which Chandler was holding on to) to walk to the door.
    Chandler: You are surprisingly strong!
  • No Sparks: Monica is frustrated because despite liking Pete she isn't attracted to him. Rachel calls things off with Mark because she realized he was a good friend and former co-worker, and sleeping with him would only accomplish getting back at Ross.
  • Operation: Jealousy: When Rachel returns his belongings (essentially formalizing their break-up), a crushed Ross throws a fit and demands his other things, including the eponymous tiny t-shirt that he knows she likes so much. He claims he's just helping her move on, so she does him one better by going out with Mark and making sure he sees them together. To say that the plan works would be an understatement.
  • Shaped Like Itself: Invoked;
Ross: (watching Rachel and Mark through Chandler's peephole) The door's closed! I can't see anything with the door closed!
Chandler: And the inventor of the door rests happily in his grave.
  • Shout-Out:
    • To Star Wars: Pete owns two full-size Stormtrooper uniforms.
    • When Joey enters the apartment dancing, Ross deduces that he got the part in the play. Chandler them adds, "either that, or Gloria Estefan was right; eventually the rhythm is going to get you."
  • Stepping Out to React: In the Cold Open, Gunther is trying to work himself up to ask Rachel out when Mark comes into the coffee shop and does it first. Gunther walks offscreen into the staff area and there's a series of loud crashes and smashing sounds. As everyone in the main room looks over he walks out and flatly says "I broke a cup".
