Recap / Friends S 10 E 9 The One With The Birth Mother

Go To

Monica and Chandler go to Ohio to meet Erica (Anna Faris), their prospective baby's birth mother. Joey goes on a date, but is bearish about sharing food with her. Ross also has a date and wants to dress up, but ends up wearing a new shirt of Rachel's by mistake.

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Chandler gets around all of Monica's justifications and deflections by simply asking, "How can you be okay with this?"
  • Armor-Piercing Response: "Monica, I want a baby, too, but this woman is giving away her child. She deserves to know who it's going to."
  • As the Good Book Says...: Monica in her guise as a minister "quotes" the Bible at Erica's behest.
Monica: And behold she did adopt unto them a baby. And it was good.
  • Berserk Button: Sharing his food (even a single French fry) with anyone really makes Joey lose it.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Ross over why everyone in the coffee shop is staring at him in his new shirt.
  • Dresses the Same: Joey makes fun of the shirt Ross is wearing, only for Ross to point out Joey's wearing the exact same shirt. Ross ends up wearing the same shirt as his date after taking Rachel's shopping bag by mistake.
  • Everyone Has Standards: After they've been lying to her about who they are, Chandler is noticeable displeased when Erica picks them outright.
  • Informed Judaism: Chandler has to remind Monica that she couldn't actually be a reverend because she's Jewish.
    Monica: Technicality!
  • Hypocritical Humor: Joey is very staunch about how he doesn't share food! But he covets his date's chocolate cake and eats it all while she's in the bathroom.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Monica tries to justify being confused for a reverend by saying, as a chef, she serves God by feeding the hungry and poor. Chandler retorts with the rather large price of veal chop.
  • Karmic Jackpot: Chandler insists they come clean with Erica and later has a heart-to-heart with her about how much they want a child. As a result, Chandler and Monica get to adopt a baby.
  • Lost Food Grievance: Joey loses interest in his date for stealing his food.
  • Mistaken Identity: Monica and Chandler's file got mixed up, leaving Erica under the impression that they are a minister and a doctor, respectively. They milk it for all it's worth since Erica is so impressed, but later admit the truth. Erica is at first angry, but decides to stick with them after a heartfelt plea from Chandler.
  • Unplanned Crossdressing: Rachel agreed to get some good clothes for Ross, but she also got some things for herself. As a result of a bag mix-up, Ross wears one of her shirts thinking it's a fashionable one for a guy. Despite Joey's attempt to convince him, Ross doesn't realize what happened until he sees his date wearing the same shirt.
