Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 6 E 5 Hal Lou Ween

Go To

When Jessica refuses to let Louis set up a haunted house attraction for Halloween, he tries to trick his wife into developing some holiday spirit. Emery and Evan can't decide on Coordinated Clothes, so they try to get Eddie to join them as a trio.

  • Appeal to Flattery: Louis' plan to convince Jessica to love Halloween hinges on setting up a fake fan club for her book, and works near-flawlessly.
  • Brick Joke: Emery and Evan get inspired to make a three-part costume after coming across an old photo of them and Eddie as a Mariachi Band. In The Tag, they decide to wear the Mariachi outfits again...which no longer fit.
  • Coordinated Clothes: Emery and Evan are fond of wearing matching costumes on Halloween (for example, Mulder and Scully), and decide to get Eddie to join in when they can't decide what to wear. Meanwhile, Honey and Marvin are dressed as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and (a winged and haloed, since Marvin hasn't seen the show) Angel.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: When Jessica finds Trent at Cattleman's Ranch with a back problem, she convinces him to reveal Louis' Xanatos Speed Chess by throwing a sugar packet on the ground and stating it's his job as Louis' assistant manager to bend over with his bad back and pick it up unless he squeals.
  • Food as Bribe: Emery and Evan convince Eddie to coordinate costumes with them by revealing that Jessica's giving out plain raisins this year, so trick-or-treating with them is his best bet to get actual candy on Halloween.
  • From the Mouths of Babes: At the end of the episode, when Jessica gains an appreciation for Halloween and agrees to hand out raisins with Louis, the girls they're given to are outraged and state, quote, "You ruined my childhood, you bitches!"
  • Halloween Episode: In which Louis wants to set up a haunted house but ends up tricking Jessica into going trick-or-treating with him when she doesn't approve, and the boys try to decide on what costumes to wear.
  • Her Code Name Was "Mary Sue": While describing to Louis how excited she is about children loving her book, Jessica Huang admits that the main protagonist "Jennifer Hong" was based on herself.
  • Innocently Insensitive: The boys originally try dressing as each other for their Coordinated Clothes, but due to miscommunication and Evan not wanting to accidentally misrepresent his older brothers, they all end up dressing as Evan. Then, when they get to Marvin and Honey's house, Eddie and Emery deciding to "act" like Evan ends up accidentally hurting his feelings.
  • Mistaken for Dying: When Jessica is investigating Cattleman's Ranch as part of Louis diverting her attention, she sees Trent passed out on the floor and thinks he's been murdered. When she checks his body, however, it turns out he's just exhausted and the hardwood floor was helping him deal with a backache.
  • Shout-Out: One of the kids in the "A Case of a Knife to the Brain" fan club is dressed as Bender from Futurama, Grandma Huang is dressed as Cartman from South Park, and three of the trick-or-treaters that visit the Huangs are dressed as The Powerpuff Girls. And the old Halloween costume the boys pull out at the end was of the ¡Three Amigos!, complete with them copying one of the poses from the film.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When Evan and Emery refer to a three-person coordinated outfit as a "threesome", Eddie tells them to never describe it that way again.
  • Wardrobe Malfunction: In The Tag, the kids decide to dress up in their old matching Mariachi Band costumes for old time's sake...but Eddie and Emery have clearly outgrown the outfits and struggle to keep them intact, while Evan only still fits in his because he skipped breakfast that day.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Louis works hard to make Jessica gain a love for the holiday. After his initial plan to let them host a Haunted House attraction (hoping to appeal to the mystery-writing Jessica's love of fear) is forbidden by her, he convinces a young girl at the school's costume contest (which Jessica is judging on his behalf) to dress like the protagonist of Jessica's novel, convinces Jessica to dress in a trick-or-treat costume to investigate houses to see where she lives, and has the girl's sister state that she's at a party at a graveyard when they find her...but when Jessica thinks she means a metaphorical graveyard, as the victims in her book were buried under a school, Louis claims he needs to part ways with her and go decorate Cattleman's, in order to move the party to the correct location. Jessica finds out the truth when she goes to Cattleman's herself on the way to the school and forces Trent to squeal, then tells the party kids to stab her (in order for them to get on the news and boost book sales) to get Louis to intervene and confess.
