Eddie is anxious about Tina not getting along with Jessica, only for them to bond over ways they want to force Eddie to improve himself. Not wanting be defined by Cattleman's, and with some encouragement from Emery, Louis considers taking up a new profession.

  • Asleep, Not Meditating: While the main plots are going on, Evan decides to try meditation with Grandma in the garage. Although Evan's genuinely attempting to find inner peace, he's dismayed to realize Grandma has been using it as an excuse to take naps.
  • Batman Gambit: When Emery overhears Louis considering not exploring any new passions after a string of failures, Emery acts like he's going to quit drama class due to a recent bad performance, knowing that Louis will give him a pep talk that he can then apply to Louis' own situation.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: The good news is that, despite Eddie's fear that they wouldn't, Tina and Jessica quickly start to get along. The bad news is that the things they connect over upset Eddie, like their attempts to forcibly improve him.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: The Louis plotline has him looking for new purpose, as he feels as though he's gotten into a rut managing Cattleman's and, like how Emery only recently discovered his passion for acting, wants to try new things before he's too old to.
  • Gag Haircut: Louis' first attempt to find a new passion is by becoming a barber. Trent's face ends up covered in marks from a (completely unnecessary) shaving attempt, another of Eddie's friends is missing a chunk of hair and complains it'll take months to grow back, and Marvin ends up running before Louis can even attempt to cut his hair.
  • It Will Never Catch On: In The Tag, Louis bumps into someone from a motivational seminar he tried giving earlier as part of his search for a new calling, who states he was genuinely motivated by Louis and asks if Louis is willing to invest in his new business: an internet "space" where people can share pictures and communicate with each other. Louis turns the offer down, stating that people already have the U.S. Postal Service for that, and calls the man an idiot after he leaves.
  • The Killjoy: The initial reason Eddie refuses to introduce his girlfriend to Jessica is because Jessica ruins everything he loves; the three examples he cites are spoiling the ending to Fight Club because she doesn't want him to see an R-Rated movie, removing the creamy filling out of his desserts, and patching his N.W.A shirt so it says "Respect Tha Police".
  • Non-Indicative Name: While Eddie discusses relationships with his friends, one of them wonders why one girl they're interested in is called "Short" Linda despite being six feet tall. Trent replies that she's a curt talker, so her statements are what's short.
  • Odd Friendship: Eddie initially worries that Tina and Jessica will hate each other, and has intentionally been trying to separate them. When they do meet, they end up immediately bonding, especially over their attempts to change Eddie for the better, to the point of making Eddie attempt to break them up. Later, both women admit that, while they do genuinely like each other, they were both overly eager to bond because they knew how much the other meant to Eddie.
