Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 5 E 3 Working The Ween

Go To

Jessica and Louis offer to babysit Maria, Honey and Marvin's infant daughter, on Halloween night while they attend a costume party. Eddie gets a job in a mattress store to make extra money, and ends up having to work in the store all by himself on Halloween, but Trent arrives to keep him company. Evan and Emery deal with a trick-or-treater that seems to be switching costumes to get more candy.

  • Agent Mulder / Agent Scully: Evan and Emery are dressed as the pair for Halloween, and take on the respective role when debating whether the girl that keeps showing up in different costumes is the same person or a shapeshifter/series of doppelgangers/etc.
  • Broken Pedestal: A positive version of this comes into play when Honey and Marvin return home and see the Huangs absolutely failing to keep Maria calm; having been convinced that the Huangs were perfect parents, this helps them accept their own struggles with parenthood.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Trent decides to keep Eddie company to help him stay calm during the spookiest night of the year, but Trent's own fear ends up ruining the night, from keeping them safe by locking the doors (preventing customers from entering) to assuming that a customer that does show up is actually a vampire and chasing her out.
  • Crack is Cheaper: To apologize for being a Nervous Wreck and ruining Eddie's chances to make a good impression on his boss at the mattress store, Trent offers to buy a mattress. He balks when he hears a brand-new one costs $4000, but is willing to pay $75 for a "used" one.
  • Description Cut: Immediately after Jessica and Louis ensure their friends that they're absolutely capable of babysitting after having pleasant experiences raising their own children, complete with a flashback to a perfectly calm Eddie, it cuts to Maria crying and them having no clue what to do about it.
  • Dramatic Irony: The Tag ends with Louis and Jessica sincerely believing they at least raised one of their sons well without any additional supervision, before a final Once More, with Clarity shows the audience that it was actually a young Eddie that was secretly responsible for keeping baby Evan well-behaved.
  • Goofy Suit: The mattress store has one shaped like a mattress, but it freaks Trent out when he first sees it.
  • Halloween Episode: As indicated by the title, the episode's events occur on Halloween, with costumes and trick-or-treating being major elements.
  • Identical Twin Mistake: At the end of Evan and Emery's plot, just when they decide to refuse the "girl' a fourth piece of candy, it turns out that she's actually the last of a set of identical quadruplets and they egg the house in revenge.
  • Nepotism: The reason Eddie's determined to do well at the mattress store is to avert this, as he's become self-conscious that the only success he's found in the real world is working at his father's restaurant.
  • Nervous Wreck: It immediately turns out that Trent is one of these, and his claim that he's with Eddie to keep Eddie calm is actually an excuse to avoid hanging with the rest of their friends at a party in a cemetery, though he still feels the need to confess to Eddie at the end.
  • Once More, with Clarity: It turns out that raising their children was much harder than Jessica and Louis' first flashback indicates; first Louis admits to going behind Jessica's back to give Eddie special attention, then Jessica paid Grandma to constantly supervise Emery without Louis knowing, and then The Tag reveals that baby Eddie secretly calmed Evan down while his parents still assume that he was always just perfectly calm.
