Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 6 E 14 Family Van

Go To

When the Huang's trusty family van takes a turn for the worse, Jessica and Louis each process the loss in their own way. Meanwhile, the boys sneak off on a road trip to find a time capsule they left in Washington D.C. before the family moved to Orlando.

  • Book Ends: In The Tag, the family is shown having finally enjoyed a day at Disneyworld, which is where they were heading in the opening scene before the van broke down.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Jessica blames Louis for the van breaking down, as he's worn out the brakes by stopping at every intersection instead of following her example and rolling through them. She later makes a right-hand turn from the left-most lane while stealing the van and being chased by Louis and Calvin, which Louis states is just normal behavior for her.
  • Call-Back: While reminiscing about the van, previous episodes are mentioned and clipped, like the time Louis got tasered next to it, when the kids tried to take the van for a joyride, and how Evan and Emery always wanted to take a trip to the World's Biggest Peanut in it. Also, Emery is still vegan and doesn't like Eddie only buying gas station hot dogs for their D.C. trip, and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Motors salesman that tried selling the Huangs an RV is the same man that Jessica sells the family van to (and then steals from).
  • Companion Cube: Louis had nicknamed the family van "Sheila" and states that it was practically family.
  • I Always Wanted to Say That: Calvin, the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Motors salesman, decides to not call the police when Jessica steals the van back because he's always wanted to live out a Buddy Cop Show and wants to chase her down alongside Louis.
  • Lethal Eatery: By the time Eddie's finished kidnapping his brothers and brought them to D.C., the multiple gas station hot dogs he's eaten end up making him severely ill and unable to actually help find the Time Capsule they buried.
  • Moving Beyond Bereavement: Louis and Jessica deal with the van's breakdown differently; Louis treats it like the loss of a relative, while Jessica learns how costly the repairs will be and then immediately sells it in order to distance herself and avoid an emotional breakdown (which she ends up having when Louis tries to make her confront her emotions, leading to her stealing the van back from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Motors).
  • Status Quo Is God: In The Tag, it's shown that the Huangs have their family van back in working condition, as (despite both the high repair costs and the fact that she committed grand theft auto) Jessica was able to make a deal with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Motors.
  • Tempting Fate: The Huangs are on their way to visit Disneyworld and singing "Hakuna Matata" (It means no worries, for the rest of your days) right before the van breaks down; Louis even says they were "too happy".
  • Time Capsule: The B Plot is focused on Eddie trying to remember where they buried one of these, as the family van breaking down is a reminder that he doesn't have much time left to bond with his brothers before they start going their separate ways.
