Recap / Frasier S 05 E 16 Beware Of Greeks

Go To

Frasier tries to smooth things over with his estranged Greek relatives to attend his cousin's bachelor party.

Tropes:

  • Bad Boss: When Frasier makes a joke around Zora about visiting the Greek isles, one of her chefs chuckles at this, and is promptly smacked upside the head by Zora for it.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Martin spends the episode trying to get his hands on a camera that's gotten incriminating footage of his insulting Walt and Zora. When he finally gets it, he considers all the effort that went into the filming, and declares "I can't do this." ... then Daphne tells him which button is the eject button, at which point he gleefully removes the recording and throws it away.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Crystal barges into the rehearsal dinner and proclaims her love for Nikos, thus saving him from what would have been a disastrous marriage to Mary Ann.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Daphne's only contribution to the Crane boys discussing the fallout with Zora is to pipe in that she likes zither music, and always has... and then walks off, leaving them confused.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Nikos' girlfriend is blatantly only dating him to get back at her parents, and the thing that most upsets her about his reuniting with his ex is that it's made them happy.
  • Disposable FiancĂ©: Mary Ann Taubeneck. She's a beautiful and genteel young woman from a wealthy family, but it turns out she doesn't really love Nikos and she's only marrying him to spite her parents.
[Crystal and Nikos are reunited and embrace]
    Mary Ann: Nikos! Nikos!
Nikos: I'm sorry Mary Ann, but Crystal's the one I'm meant to be with.
Mary Ann: I will never forgive you for this.
[Mr. and Mrs. Taubeneck look relieved and happy]
Mary Ann: Oh, see how happy you've made my parents!?
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Zora blames Frasier for giving Nikos some well-meaning advice that, from most people's point of view, has turned out badly for him. Fair enough, but she also refuses to let Martin see his own brother because of it.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Nikos and Mary Ann are getting married after only knowing each other for a few months.
  • Girl Next Door: Crystal. She's an plain spoken, dark haired young woman who works as a juggler. She was dating Nikos before he met Mary Ann.
  • Gold Digger: Inverted. Mary Ann is a wealthy lady who is only marrying her groom because he's poor.
  • Grievous Bottley Harm: The episode ends with Zora deciding she's going to do more than raise a glass to Nikos' happiness, and advances on Frasier.
  • Hates Their Parent: Mary Ann hates her snobby parents and she's only marrying Nikos because she knows it will embarrass them.
Mary Ann: Look at them sulking over there. You should have seen the look on their face when a told them I was marrying a street person.
    Nikos: Street Performer.
    Mary Ann: Oh, right.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end, Frasier causes himself, Niles and Martin to be estranged from their Greek relatives again.
  • I Gave My Word: Frasier only manages to earn Zora's forgiveness by vowing not to give Mikos any more advice ever again. She spends the rehearsal watching him like a hawk, just in case.
  • Kissing Cousins: The fact that Yvonne and Niles are cousins doesn't stop her from aggressively pursuing him. Niles is extremely uncomfortable with it and spends the rehearsal dinner running around the restaurant trying to avoid her.
  • Large Ham: Aunt Zora is... loud. And volatile. She tends to yell her every line.
  • Memetic Badass: In-universe. Apparently Aunt Zora joined the Greek Partisans to fight Nazis. Frasier is a little dubious, since she'd have been a child at the time. This, Niles notes, is probably why the stories say she killed them with jump ropes.
  • Parent-Preferred Suitor: Inverted. Zora wants her son to marry the wealthy Mary Ann and not his juggler girlfriend, Crystal.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Frasier's Greek relatives and Martin's brother Walt only appear in this episode, have never been mentioned before and will never be mentioned again.
  • Rich Bitch: Mary Ann is wealthy and enjoys upsetting her parents.
  • Series Continuity Error: Martin said earlier in the show that he had no brother and yet, he has a brother in this episode (possibly justified by the fact that they were estranged at that time. And they don't even seem to be close seeing as they just sit in silence even when they're reunited.).
  • Sexy Jester: Crystal is an attractive young woman who who bursts into the reception dinner still wearing the clown costume she performs in.
  • Street Performer: Zora is angry at Frasier because he advised Nikos to follow his dream to become a street performer instead of going to medical school.
  • White Anglo-Saxon Protestant: The Taubeneck's. They're an old-monied, affluent family and Mary Ann mentions having been a debutante.
