Recap / Everybody Hates Chris S 1 E 19 Everybody Hates Drew

Go To

  • The Ace: Drew is extremely talented to the point where he can learn karate simply by watching movies and imitating what he sees the trained professionals do.
  • An Aesop:
    • Someone's going to be better than you at certain things, whether you like it or not. There's no use being envious.
    • That someone could very well be your sibling. They're still family at the end of the day.
  • Berserk Button: Grabbing Mr. Jackson’s shoulder causes him to promptly try a dangerous karate move that can instantly break someone’s hand. It’s heavily implied that he learned this due to it being exactly how he got his girlfriend stolen from him.
  • Big Little Brother: Deconstructed. Drew is better than Chris at just about everything, and even hands his clothes down to Chris rather than vice-versa, but despite all of that, he still idolizes his big brother.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Drew can perfectly imitate karate simply by watching it. This comes back to bite Chris in the ass when Drew asks to teach him the handbreaker move, but instantly remembers how to do it, and breaks his brother's arm.
  • Freudian Slip: Chris asks his sensei, Mr. Jackson, if they'll learn how to break boards like in the movies. Mr. Jackson proceeds to go on a tirade asking Chris if a board ever did anything to him personally, like stealing his girlfriend from him.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Chris is very jealous of Drew being much better than him at pretty much everything, despite being younger than him. This is what inspires him to take karate lessons, which Drew is also very gifted at.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Drew doesn't need professional training to learn karate; he can just watch someone do it and perfectly emulate it with ease.
  • Ironic Episode Title: The episode may as well be titled "Everybody Loves Drew."
  • Kick the Dog: Chris deliberately tries a dangerous karate move on Drew in an attempt to cripple him because he's jealous of his status as The Ace.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Breaking Drew's hand just gets him even more attention, especially from girls, and he can still perform impressive feats one-handed. At the end of the episode, Drew is yet again able to perfectly emulate karate simply by seeing it, and breaks Chris' hand.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Chris breaking Drew's hand to cripple his talent and bring attention to himself only gets Drew much more attention, and he's still very much The Ace with one hand.
  • Thicker Than Water: Julius beautifully explains to Chris that despite Drew being better than Chris at many things, he's still his brother, and even looks up to him.
Julius: "Chris, being brothers ain't easy, alright? I have six brothers, and whether you like it or not, somebody's gonna be better than you at something. But you can't be jealous! He's the only brother you got! Besides, I don't know if you realize, but he looks up to you."
  • Trauma Button: Grabbing Mr. Jackson’s shoulder sets him off and makes him break the unfortunate person’s hand. When some guy walked up to him and his girlfriend when they were on a date, he also put his hand on his shoulder while he won her over.
