Uh... what's that behind you?

Carter: Taggart said the combustion was caused by meson particles coming from a solar flare. I'm no astrophysicist but I don't think there are a lot of solar flares inside a house.
Henry: He's right.
Jo: Really?
Carter: Could you not act so surprised?

After changing time, Jack and Henry must adjust to a new timeline. But as their memories clash with events that unfold, can they cope with their losses?

Meanwhile, people are spontaneously combusting and it has something to do with the Artefact.

Tropes

  • Aesop Amnesia: Having wiped Jack's memories, Henry applies for a job with Global, implying that he intends to once again work his way to a position where he can use time travel to prevent Kim's death.
  • Age-Gap Romance: Jo and Zoe discuss Jo's relationship with Taggart.
Jo: Maybe it was just a one time thing. You know. Adrenaline. Heat of the moment.
Zoe: Making out with Taggart? More like a moment of insanity.
Jo: Not so loud. Look, I really need some outside perspective here. Please?
    Zoe: You want perspective?
    Jo: Uh-huh.
Zoe: You hooked up with a guy whose age difference with you is the same as me and my dad.
    Jo: That did it.
  • Butterfly of Doom: Jack spends the episode assuming he and Allison getting together is just meant to be. However, he's thrown when Stark nearly dies, which seems to rekindle some feelings in Allision and ruins what was supposed to be the first date Jack and Allison had. Henry tells Jack his memories of this timeline are going to keep causing more problems and alter history more, thus necessitating making Jack forget them.
  • Call-Back: The memory eraser is back, improved by Henry to erase years of memories at a time.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Jack keeps slipping up by behaving as he would in "his" timeline, for example by addressing Allison as "Allie" or telling Zoe to drive herself to school (forgetting she's fifteen again).
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Henry wipes Jack's memories of the Alternate Timeline.
  • Nausea Fuel: Taggart demonstrates of his meson theory of what's causing the combustions by emptying a bucket of medical waste and aiming a ray at it. This causes an explosion, covering Jack and Jo with Ludicrous Gibs.
  • Memory Wipe Exploitation: Henry tells Jack he blames him for Kim's death before wiping his memories.
  • Secret Test of Character: Averted for laughs as Jack just hands Zoe the car keys to drive herself. It takes Allison's reminder for it to hit Jack that Zoe is 15 years old at this point and he takes the keys back, claiming, "that was a test and you failed."
  • Shower of Awkward: Played for laughs as Jack is in the shower when Allison calls on a video chat. She's thrown when Jack nonchalantly faces her naked, not finding it all odd and an air of "not like it's anything you haven't seen before." It takes a few moments for Jack to remember that from Allison's viewpoint, she hasn't seen this before to terminate the picture.
  • Spontaneous Human Combustion: This is the Mystery of the Week. As it turns out the reason is radiation from the Artifact.
