Recap / Elena Of Avalor S 2 E 8 Shapeshifters

Go To

Determined to go after Shuriki and believing she must search for her alone, Elena uses a spell that shapeshifts her into a jaquin but becomes framed for a crime she didn't commit.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • An Aesop: Leave the job to someone who is trained to do it. Otherwise, you risk causing damage to yourself, others, and worsening the situation.
  • Battle Rapping: "The Right Thing To Do" is a rap battle between Elena and Esteban regarding whether or not it's really right for her to go off and fight Shuriki.
  • Call-Back:
    • The episode takes place a few days after "Rise of the Sorceress".
    • Esteban asks Elena if Shuriki said anything. He's obviously worried that Shuriki might've said something about his betrayal.
  • I Told You So: Esteban's facial expression reads this after the Grand Council votes to have Elena stay in the palace instead of having her go off to look for Shuriki.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Esteban is arrogant about it, but he has a point that Elena can't just go off on her own to fight a powerful sorceress without an actual plan, especially since Avalor can't afford to lose its queen. There's also the fact that A). Esteban's known Shuriki for at least four decades to know what she's capable of and B). He's lost Elena once, he does not want to lose her again.
  • Like Brother and Sister: At the end of "The Right Thing to Do", Esteban rolls his eyes and grins while Elena voices her anger at the Grand Council for agreeing with him, as if they were siblings that just had a spat and the adult in charge of them took Esteban's side.
  • Musical World Hypotheses: Musical Alternate Universe. When Elena and Esteban have their rap battle in the form of "The Right Thing to Do", Naomi asks out loud what exactly is happening, to which Abuela shrugs as if to say that they should just go along with it.
  • The Needs of the Many: Esteban has to remind Elena that she stands for Avalor's hope and that everyone will need their ruler alive. If she dies, then so will that hope.
  • Never Say "Die": Shuriki took Elena's parents away from her.
  • Revenge: Why Elena wants to get back at Shuriki immediately. Esteban, knowing Shuriki, knows better than to act against her without a plan.
  • Shout-Out: "The Right Thing to Do" is inspired by Hamilton.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Esteban takes Gabe's sword, throws it up into the air, and catches it while having one hand behind his back.
