Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 5 E 1 Mission Ed Possible

Go To

Airdate: November 4th, 2005

It's report card day at Peach Creek Jr. High, and all but Ed and Eddy have received their report cards. Apparently, Ed and Eddy did so poorly in their classes that the school principal got some "backstabbin' jerk" (later revealed to be Double D) to hand deliver Ed and Eddy's report cards straight to their parents. Knowing that they'll get in big trouble if their parents see their report cards, Ed and Eddy do everything they can to prevent Double D from getting their report cards to their parents.

"Mission Ed-Possible" includes examples of:

  • Animation Bump: This was the first episode of the series (aside from the specials) to be colored digitally after clinging to cell coloration for a couple years after it had gone out of vogue. The result is a brighter color pallet and tighter lines.
  • Batman Gambit: When Ed and Eddy finally get Double D just before he can give Ed and Eddy's report cards to their parents, it turns out to be all for naught, because the report cards weren't even on Double D's person during the entire duration of the chase. As it turns out, Double D realized that he wouldn't be able to complete his assignment from the principal with his friends after him, so he ended up making a deal with Rolf—have Rolf deliver Ed and Eddy's report cards to their parents while Double D distracted them with the chase. It ends up being a win-win situation for Rolf and Double D—Double D got his job from the principal done while Rolf ended up earning the "Report Card Delivery"-badge from the Urban Rangers.
  • Blatant Lies: At the end of the episode when Eddy is grabbed by his father and dragged off-screen, Eddy panics and tries telling his dad that the grades are in Greek this year and that he did good. His father obviously doesn't buy it.
  • Comically Missing the Point: One of Ed and Eddy's attempts to stop Double D is to dig a giant hole in the ground. When Double D arrives the two of them are in the hole waiting with Ed still digging, but Double D stops before falling in. Eddy, while still in the hole demands Double D hand over their report cards, and Double D proceeds to simply walk around the hole. Eddy is shocked by this and blames Ed, saying he should have dug deeper.
  • Couldn't Find a Tissue: After Ed and Eddy’s first failed attempt to catch Edd, Ed starts crying, turns Eddy into a giant tissue, and blows his snot all over him.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Ed and Eddy try to stop Double D with a giant hole they dug, and Eddy assumes they finally have him cornered. The unimpressed Double D just simply walks around the hole, leaving Eddy to angrily blame Ed for not digging deeper.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Jimmy views Double D politely asking him and Sarah to move their float aside so he can pass them to be "rabblerousing" and tells Sarah, leading her to turn the float around to find the “rabblerouser” and beat him up.
  • Dumb Jock: Downplayed. Kevin got four Cs, two Bs and one D on his report card. Still much better than Eddy's grades.
  • Ear Ache: Ed's mom drags him away by the ear at the end of the episode.
  • Education Mama: Ed's and Eddy's respective parents grab them and pull them offscreen for their bad grades.
  • The Faceless: The arms of Eddy's father and Ed's mother appear to drag them away. Aside from Ed's nightmare in "Rock-a-Bye Ed", this is the first time any part of the kid's parents appear.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: When Ed and Eddy finally catch Edd and start digging around in his pack, Edd sports a knowing smile, because he entrusted the report cards to Rolf just before leaving the school.
  • Funny Background Event: During the brief montage of the Eds waiting for the school day to end, various antics occurs with the other students throughout classes, ranging from Rolf struggling to understand how protractors work in Math, to Lee and Marie pranking May in Cooking, to Jonny covering Plank's eyes in horror while Kevin saws through wood during Woodshop.
  • Hero Stole My Bike: At one point, Double D takes Kevin's bike to get away from Ed and Eddy.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Kevin is usually just a jerkass and a bully for his own amusement, but this time he was right to want to beat up Edd for stealing and destroying his bike.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The episode ends with Double D about to get stomped by Kevin for stealing and accidentally wrecking his bike.
  • Literal-Minded: When Ed catches Rolf in a net at school instead of Double D, Eddy angrily asks Ed "Does Rolf look like Double D?" while shoving Rolf in his face. After a few moments of thinking, Ed happily replies "Maybe with a hat!"
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Ed and Eddy are completely terrified when their enraged parents, after seeing their report cards, begin dragging them away.
    • Double D can only quiver and sweat in mortal terror when Kevin prepares to beat the snot out of him for stealing and accidentally damaging his bike.
  • Parasol Parachute: After Edd gets launched high into the air, he uses his umbrella to safely float down to the ground.
  • Pet the Dog: Rolf helps Double D with his initial escape attempt from Ed and Eddy at the school, and secretly delivers the report cards for him at his request.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Ed uses this on Double D in an attempt to stop him from delivering the report cards.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Edd did succeed in delivering Ed and Eddy's report cards to their parents, but now he has to deal with an angry Kevin ready to pound him for stealing and wrecking his bike.
  • Scary Shadow Fakeout: Eddy and Ed are looking for their report cards in Edd's backback when the shadow of the school principal appears over the lockers. Eddy turns around to explain himself, and discovers that Edd had placed a cardboard cutout in front of a flashlight to fool them.
  • Shout-Out: Not only is the title a reference to Mission: Impossible, but at one point, Double D manages to escape Ed and Eddy by floating away on his umbrella (a la Mary Poppins)—and Eddy questions how he could've been able to do so.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Despite her obvious ditziness, Nazz actually did pretty well in her classes—way better than Kevin (see Dumb Jock above), Eddy, and Ed—her lowest grade was a D in cooking.
  • Sore Loser: When Eddy finds out too late that Rolf was delivering the reporting cards and Edd tricked him and Ed into chasing him, Eddy angrily attempts to throttle Edd to avenge his humiliating loss. Too bad for him that his angry father arrives to talk to him about his grades.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Meatloaf may be the favorite food of the Kanker Sisters because they all got excited about dinner at their house being "Meatloaf Monday".
  • Tree Buchet: A variation; after Eddy grabs Edd by the leg during their chase, Edd hurriedly pulls out an umbrella from his bag and latches onto a tree with it, bending it over in the process. When Eddy's grip on his leg ultimately slips, Edd gets sent flying, and on top of that, the heavily-swinging tree pounds Eddy and Ed into the dirt on the snapback.
  • Wild Goose Chase: A variation; Ed and Eddy spend the entirety of episode chasing after Edd to get their report cards from him and change them. When they finally do catch him however, it turns out that Edd never had the report cards on his person ever since he left the school building. He entrusted them to Rolf to deliver in his place while he distracted Ed and Eddy with the chase, buying Rolf enough time to complete the task.
