Recap / Dragons Riders Of Berk S 1 E 18 Gem Of A Different Color

Go To

When Snotlout and the villagers mistake color-changing dragon eggs for gems that bring good fortune, Fishlegs, who is responsible for the eggs' discovery, must take a stand against Snotlout, who is trying to sell the eggs, and reunite them with their Changewing mothers before they destroy Berk.

Tropes

  • Abusive Parents: Gustav's mother sells him to Snotlout for what she thinks is a lucky gem.
  • Acrophobic Bird: While fleeing from the mother Changewing, the gang continues to fly close to the ground and under the tree canopy rather than trying to gain height to get away from the nests and lose their pursuers or to avoid having to constantly dodge around tree trunks. Hiccup even says they need to get out of the trees, but they do so by trying to exit the forest horizontally — the thought of simply flying a few feet upwards to clear the treetops never occurs to anyone.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Lampshaded after Fishlegs threatens Snotlout in order to make him give back the egg.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Invoked by Bucket when Fishlegs threatens Snotlout.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The "ugly baby" Magnus and her mother makes a reappearance.
    • Tuffnut plans to test a "lucky stone" by falling into a pit of Fireworms.
  • Continuity Snarl: Although Fishlegs says that there is no Changewing page in the dragon manual on account of the species being excellent at camouflaging their bodies, the first movie does show a Changewing illustration in the book.
  • Cowardly Lion: After returning the last Changewing egg to its mothers and asking them to leave, Fishlegs faints.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: Snotlout sells the Changewing eggs for valuable goods.
  • Gentle Giant: Played With. At the end of the episode Fishlegs happily dives into combat training with Snotlout, but at the beginning he skived off the lesson in favor of spending time at the beach with Meatlug.
  • Gold Fever: As soon as word gets out that Fishlegs has found a Stone of Good Fortune, the entire village starts clamoring for it, swarming Fishlegs to touch the stone and desperately offering anything to convince him to part with it — most people offer to give him herds' worth of livestock, and one woman tries to sell her firstborn son for the gem.
  • Greed: Snotlout is full of it. Even after he learns that the "stones" are eggs, and that their parents will tear apart Berk to get them back, he only cares about making money.
  • Hollywood Acid: The Changewings' acid is a shockingly green liquid capable of melting its way through a tree trunk in seconds.
  • Invisible Jerkass: The Changewings while retrieving their eggs.
  • It's All My Fault: Fishlegs says this when Snotlout sells the Changewing eggs for luck. Astrid agrees, much to Hiccup's discomfort.
  • Mama Bear: The Changewing mothers. Three eggs went missing, and yet, every single mother of the group tracks them down to Berk.
  • Now You Tell Me: Gobber tells the legend of the lucky gems in the beginning, only to remember the description of Changewing eggs after the first raid from the mothers.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Hiccup when Gobber pairs him with Astrid for combat training.
    • Fishlegs on realizing that he stole a dragon egg by accident.
    • Magnus's mother when her baby gets tossed in the air.
  • Playing Possum: Gobber tells Hiccup to do this during a combat lesson when Astrid pins Hiccup to the floor.
  • Remembered Too Late: Gobber realized that the gems were actually Changewing eggs after the cast had learned it the hard way, commenting that he always gets them mixed up.
  • Snake Oil Salesman: Snotlout sells the Changewing eggs as lucky stones.
  • Tag Along Kid: This episode marks the first appearance of Gustav, who ends up following Snotlout throughout the episode.

Angry Fishlegs

The normally non-violent, peaceful Fishlegs can become scary if you get between a dragon egg and its mother. As Bucket says, its always the quite ones that snap the loudest.

How well does it match the trope?
