The first Dragon Air show on Berk has come, only Hiccup hasn't found other Night Furies that could accompany Toothless during the show. After Gobber and Stoick entrust him with the Viking Bork's dragon records, as a reward for doing so well with the Academy, Hiccup finds directions to an island of Night Furies.
This episode provides examples of
- Attack! Attack... Retreat! Retreat!: Snotlout gives these orders to Hookfang to save him from a Changewing because when Hookfang approaches he nearly sets Snotlout on fire.
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: The twins when Snotlout distracts them with a shimmering light.
- Badass in Distress: Hiccup and Toothless by the end of the episode, being shipped off to Outcast Island.
- Bait-and-Switch: Mildew keeps eyeing Bork's old dragon glaive, and Gobber warns him not to touch it. As it turns out, Mildew tampered with Bork's book of dragons, adding an extra page about Night Furies.
- Brain Bleach: Hiccup reacts appropriately when he sees Bork's "unflattering" pictures of his neighbors.
- The Cake Is a Lie:
- The riders were supposed to go with Hiccup in the morning to the Isle of Night. Come morning, they realize that Hiccup had already left, with no note. Astrid does find his copy of the map, but only because she knows how much he uses his notebook.
- The Isle of Night does not have Night Furies. It has Outcasts waiting in ambush and one fake Night Fury.
- Cannot Keep a Secret: Fishlegs, especially when the chief of Berk is glaring at him.
- Cliffhanger: The Isle of Night was a fake Hope Spot and Outcast trap, thanks to Mildew and the Outcasts. They promptly capture Hiccup and Toothless, to send them to Outcast Island.
- Complexity Addiction: So you hide a map to another map of an island of Night Furies, the latter of which is in a remote cave with hostile wild dragons, and wait for days possible while your target comes.
- Death Glare: Hiccup levels one at Mildew as the latter gloats about how Hiccup's love for dragons got him into trouble.
- Didn't Think This Through: Hiccup and Toothless flying alone to the Isle of Night since Night Furies are supposedly "hostile to other dragons". If it had been the real deal, Hiccup would have been dealing with a clan of hostile Night Furies on his own.
- Freeze-Frame Bonus: The handwriting on the notes of the Isle of Night is slightly different from the ones in Bork's book.
- Gambit Roulette: Mildew and Alvin planted the map in a cave on a remote island with wild dragons. The cave ended up collapsing, which might have led to Hiccup getting injured and unable to fly to the Isle or unable to get a copy of the map. Also, if all the riders had shown up, as planned, the Outcasts wouldn't have been able to ambush Hiccup and Toothless as easily.
- Head Desk: Astrid bangs her head against Stormfly when Fishlegs spills the beans about going to find Hiccup at the Isle of Night to Stoick.
- Hope Spot: The Isle of Night so that Hiccup and Toothless can find more families. They learn it was an Outcast trap a bit too late.
- It's Quiet… Too Quiet: After hearing a Night Fury call and seeing a silhouette of one, Hiccup and Toothless follow it on the island. Hiccup gets a sense that something is wrong when Toothless encounters a rock wall, but before they can reunite both are captured.
- Just Between You and Me: Alvin gloats to Hiccup that he'll force the boy to teach him to train dragons and then destroy all of Berk.
- Oh, Crap!:
- Snotlout when a Changewing catches him. The same thing happens after he punches the Changewing in the face.
- Captive Hiccup when Alvin sets sail for Outcast Island.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Stoick knows that something's up when Astrid sneaks into Hiccup's room to "leave a note" and comes to check on the Riders at the Acadmey.
- Shout-Out: Mildew distracts Gobber by complaining about his cabbage cart being wrecked — sounds familiar. He even borrows his predecessor's catch phrase: "But my cabbage, Gobber!"
- Take a Third Option: When Astrid and Fishlegs find that Hiccup went on without him, Astrid sneaks into Hiccup's room and finds the book he made with the original map.
