Recap / Disenchantment S 4 E 2 The Good The Bad And The Bum Bum

Go To

Bean, and Luci, and Jerry arrive in Steamland, with Bean demanding answers from Alva. Elfo is snuck around by the ogres and he finds out a family secret. Bean and Jerry steal Alva's airship to return to Dreamland. Elfo's dad tells him a family story. Elfo's brother challenges him in a duel to the death. Bean and Jerry bring Elfo into the airship en route to Dreamland.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Not his mother, but Junior's father, the ogre king, is very clearly a highly toxic parent.
    • Pops, even in the midst of rescuing Elfo, expresses the desire to cave his head in with a stool.
  • Accidental Murder: Junior manages to kill the ogre king by accident, as he throws his club away in a statement of non-violence.
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: How the ogres react to the death of their king, accidentally killed by his own son. It is not clear if it was because he was generally a 0% Approval Rating ruler, because the ogres were shocked to watch how he was an abusive parent who was willing to let his son die, or if it was just general excitement at bloodshed in the arena.
  • Back from the Dead: Luci completes his revival with his head, body and soul all being rejoined.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Mora mentioned she voiced a squirrel in some cartoons. Bean recognizes this as the same squirrel in the cartoons Alva is watching, and sadly laments her lot.
    • Back in the previous episode, Bean says she recognizes his face from hot sauce bottles. When Bean asks Alva to describe Satan, he does so until Bean points out he's just looking at a hot sauce bottle.
  • The Bus Came Back: Staci LeBlatt the demonness returns, along with the swarm of other demons Big Jo had imprisoned. And she's still annoying everyone with her incessant yammering.
  • Call-Back: Elfo being locked in the same cell in the ogre jail than Bean was. And once again, a determined elf is totally able to infiltrate it.
  • Came Back Strong: Thanks to the Trogs giving his body a dose of Sacred Goo, once Luci is fully restored he is brought back to life as a level 2 demon with wings.
  • Caps Lock, Num Lock, Missiles Lock: Alva's desk has the options of summoning snacks or minions.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Junior claims that Elfo blinding him with swords ended his chances of becoming an artist. His father quickly points out however that Junior had no talent for that to begin with.
  • Compensating for Something: Alva admits he build the huge airship out of a mysterious desire to make up for something else after Bean left Steamland, and he even named it "The Compensator".
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Alva tries claiming the carnival ride he and Bean saw explained how Steamland's steam comes from Hell, though she points out it didn't.
    • Jerry takes a moment to imagine the people of Steamland are bugs he's squishing with his hammer, having previously shown a fondness for bug-smashing back in "The Disenchantress".
    • One of the destination choices for the Compensator is "New Cremmorah", presumably founded by whoever survived the petrification of the original Cremmorah.
  • Deal with the Devil: Alva is revealed to have made one, as Steamland's steam comes from Hell itself.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After all the hell they all went through separately and together, the episode ends with Pops, Grogda, Junior, and Elfo all living and playing happily. While Elfo ends up leaving with Bean and co., his family understands and looks forward to him visiting eventually.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: While fighting Junior, Elfo dodges a hit from Junior's mace by slipping out of his clothes, and continues the fight nude (though with a leaf to cover his privates).
  • Gentle Touch vs. Firm Hand: Elfo's mother was very loving and nurturing, while Pops was more hands-off and threatened to slap him on the bum-bum if he cried too much. She also shares this dynamic with her ogre husband and son, since she accepts Junior as he is yet her husband has A Real Man Is a Killer attitude.
  • Gone Swimming, Clothes Stolen: In the flashbacks, two monkeys steal young Elfo's clothes as he is playing in a creek.
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy: Ogre guards aren't very smart. They prove distracted by the old "throw something in the distance" trick, and Brock laments how the ones Elfo killed last time were both his most trustworthy and least effectual guards.
  • I Have No Son!: King Brock's attitude after Junior refuses to kill Elfo.
  • I Lied: Alva offers Bean and Jerry a beer, then summons his robots, saying he lied about the beer. Then Jerry smashes the robots, and Alva admits he lied about that and there really is beer.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Elfo's mother declares that now that she's gotten him back, she won't let anyone take him away again. Cue her letting the guards take him away.
  • No, Mr. Bond, I Expect You to Dine: Elfo fully expects the Ogre queen wants to eat him, but she reveals the meal she had brought in was actually for Elfo; his favorite dish, anchovies in mustard.
  • Noodle Incident: Whatever it was that prompted Stabbo the elf to get Quitto the elf.
  • No One Could Survive That!!: Pops believed Elfo's mother died due to witnessing her (apparently) getting shot through the heart by a flaming arrow. She reveals it actually hit the heart-shaped candy box he gave her (that she kept in her tunic over her heart), and it wasn't her blood he saw, but sour cherry-flavoured syrup. She in turn believed two burned corpses to be those of Pops and Elfo, while in fact they were two monkeys that had stolen some of their spare clothes.
  • Patricide: Junior inadvertently kills his father when he tosses away his mace, and it hits Brock on the head. Nobody cares though and Junior even admits he is happy now.
  • The Reveal: It is revealed the Ogre Queen is Elfo's mother.
  • Self-Deprecation: Several jokes are made about cartoons and the people that watch them, as Alva is watching cartoons in his office when Bean arrives.
  • Through His Stomach: Inverted. Elfo's father was able to woo Elfo's mother via sour candy he invented specifically for her.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: How King Brock keeps Junior in line, forcing the aspiring artist to be a blood-thirsty warrior to "earn my love."
