Recap / Dexters Laboratory S 2 EP 38

Go To

Dyno-Might: The Blue Falcon comes to Dexter's lab to have Dynomutt fixed, and Dexter gives him a new and improved Dynomutt - who turns out to be too good.

LABretto: In this mini-opera, we see the story of how Dexter became who he is.

Dyno-Might contains examples of:

  • Big "NO!": Blue Falcon yells "No!" when Buzzard rips the Pharaoh's Heart Ruby out from within Dynomutt.
  • Brick Joke: At the beginning of the cartoon, Dee Dee gets her legs into a set of Dexter's pipes. At the end of the cartoon, she's still in it.
  • Don't Touch It, You Idiot!: When Dexter first fixes Dynomutt, Dynomutt explores his laboratory and makes a mess of the place. When Dynomutt almost pushes a button, while saying Dee Dee usual phrase "What does this button do?", Dexter screams a Big "NO!" and quickly deactivates Dynomutt. This causes Dexter to decide to build Blue Falcon a new Dynomutt since he thinks this one is too much of a "goofy idiot sidekick" to be any help.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Thinking Dynomutt is too goofy and idiotic, Dexter builds a new, improved version for Blue Falcon. It proves to be efficient, but unfortunately, it treats All Crimes Are Equal, and dispenses Disproportionate Retribution.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Dynomutt might be a goofy sidekick, but he shows in the climax that he is always prepared to help save the day with him effortlessly outsmarting and defeating his bigger and nastier 2.0 version.
  • Musical Nod: Hoyt Curtin's theme from Dynomutt, Dog Wonder is heard when Blue Falcon and Dynomutt take back the Pharaoh's Heart Ruby from Buzzard as well as when Dynomutt confronts his 2.0 counterpart.
  • Noodle Incident: It is unknown how Blue Falcon knows about Dexter and that he could fix Dynomutt after he was damaged.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite Dynomutt's 2.0 counterpart being presented as much more serious and intimidating than the original, it still ends up acting like a typical dog when Dynomutt distracts him by changing his head into a cat's so it chases him while letting out typical "bark" sounds and is fooled into biting an explosive dog bone.
  • Recognition Failure: Dexter's Dad has no idea who Blue Falcon is. When the hero introduces himself, Dad thinks he's the mascot of the Atlanta Falcons, and is blue because his team had a bad season.
  • Torso with a View: What happens to Dynomutt after Buzzard rips the Pharaoh's Heart Ruby out of his chest.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When Dynomutt arrives to save Blue Falcon and Dexter, his 2.0 counterpart dismisses him as not a threat. Dynomutt quickly proves him wrong.
  • Upgrade vs. Prototype Fight: Dynomutt ends up saving Dexter and Blue Falcon from the 2.0 version.

LABretto contains examples of:

  • Ash Face: In the opening Dexter gets one when Dee Dee touches his latest experiment and causes it to explode in his face.
  • Brainy Baby: Upon being born with a huge cranium, the doctors classify Dexter 'clinically genius'.
  • Downer Ending: The final scene, summed up by Dexter with Dramatic Spotlight:
Dexter: This is not fantasy/This is reality/I'm stuck for my life! I'm stuck, and I'll be stuck forever...with...my...sister...DEE DEE!
  • "Eureka!" Moment: At first, baby Dexter isn't interested in his tinker toys, but then realized "he saw possibility" before using them to build his first invention.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: After Dee Dee wrecks the lab for the first time, Dexter notes that he can rebuild, but realizes that no matter what, Dee Dee will keep coming in and wreck his experiments, leaving him to wonder if he'll ever find true success.
  • Flashback Episode: After a brief moment in the present, in which Dee Dee ruined another of Dexter's experiments, the cartoon goes back in time to see how their lives began.
  • Foregone Conclusion: We know that Dexter won't escape from Dee Dee bothering him, since she constantly intrudes in his lab in the present.
  • Hope Spot: After Dexter completed his lab, it seemed like he would finally be able to work in peace. Unfortunately, a few moments later, Dee Dee discovered the secret entrance, as was to be expected.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Dee Dee per usual destroys Dexter's things and annoys him, starting with poking him in the belly button and making him cry when he's first brought home. Even so she claims she loves him very much. However, she later just bluntly smashes his first inventions against the ground and playfully says she probably shouldn't have touched them afterwards.
  • Literal Metaphor: When the doctor declares that newborn Dexter has a skull twice the size as norm, he means Norm, the largest man he's ever seen.
  • Mundane Utility: Dexter's first invention when he was a baby was a device to grab pears from the fruit bowl.
  • Musical Episode: Done in the style of an opera, no less!
  • Origins Episode: We are shown the chronicles of Dexter being born and how he came to build his lab.
  • Panicky Expectant Father: When Dexter was being born, his father was shown nervously pacing around in the waiting room.
Dexter's Father: My goodness! My gracious! When will this day be done? Will it be a girl? Or will I have a son?
  • Rule of Three: Dexter goes through three inventions/experiments that are ruined by Dee Dee before he builds his lab.
  • Screaming Birth: Dexter's mom, upon getting the instruction to "do [her] breathing" as she is giving birth to Dexter, soon dissolves into screaming in her labor.
  • This Is Reality: Dexter sings this word-for-word at the very end as he realizes he is doomed to forever be with Dee Dee.
  • Title Drop:
Just one more small connection and hello, to Dexter's LAB!
  • Visual Pun: Dexter's second invention was a flying pig.
  • You Didn't See That: Every time Dee Dee breaks one of Dexter's inventions begins with this exchange:
Dee Dee: Hello, dear brother! What have you got there?
Dexter: Nothing! Nothing! You only see air!
