Recap / Darkwing Duck S 2 E 11 Going Nowhere Fast

Go To

Negaduck zaps Darkwing with a particle accelerator, unknowingly giving him Super-Speed. Unfortunately, his newfound powers come with a critical flaw: Accelerated Aging. With Darkwing aging faster and faster, Negaduck easily takes control of the city.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • And I Must Scream: Negaduck's fate after drinking the slow-motion potion causes him to stop moving entirely. Darkwing takes Negaduck to a park and leaves him there as a statue, where he immediately attracts some pigeons. Negaduck is back to normal in his next appearance, so the potion presumably wore off at some point.
  • Big "YES!": When Darkwing's attempt to stop Negaduck's bank heist nearly gets everyone in the bank killed, Darkwing sarcastically asked the crowd if they would've preferred he did nothing and let Negaduck rob the bank. The crowd retaliates with this.
  • Blessed with Suck: Darkwing’s new Super-Speed doesn’t protect him from friction, as his tail feathers catch fire when he uses it for the first time. And that’s not mentioning the Rapid Aging
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Negaduck leaves Darkwing where he is so that he can run to the store and get more film for his camera. He doesn't think to tie Darkwing up first, presumably due to Darkwing's old age. Even if Darkwing had been unable to fix his predicament when he did, it still might have been possible for him to free Launchpad and the kids from the giant wheel.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Negaduck announces himself with a parody of Darkwing's entrance line, most likely to mock him.
Negaduck: I am the screeching fingernail on the chalkboard of justice! I am the sour ball in the candy jar of goodness! I am Negaduck!
  • Continuity Nod/Expy: Doctors Allen and Garrick use the same models as Doctors Larson and Gary from Beauty and the Beet.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Darkwing is delighted to have gained super speed, but he doesn't mind losing it towards the end of the episode after aging and deaging over and over again.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: During news coverage of his crime spree, Negaduck reaches through a TV screen to grab the reporter in the studio.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Drake comments on Negaduck's ego, not noticing the irony.
Drake: “What an ego! Have you seen anything like that?”
  • I Meant to Do That: Negaduck's answer to Darkwing acquiring super speed. Of course, it comes with the unfortunate side effect of Rapid Aging, which Negaduck is quick to also claim credit for planning, though his initial surprise gives him away.
    • Humorously, Darkwing is quick to whip this out as an excuse after slamming into a streetlight while chasing Negaduck.
D.W.: (dazed) I meant to do that. It clears my sinus cavities.
  • Impact Silhouette: Darkwing's Super-Speed is first revealed when he races through the front door (and a yard fence and tree) while running to catch Gosalyn when she falls out of a tree.
  • It Runs on Nonsensoleum: Darkwing is able to reverse his rapid aging simply by moving backwards and untracing his steps.
  • Magical Particle Accelerator: One that can give people Super-Speed with the side-effect of increased aging.
  • Neon Sign Hideout: While looking for Negaduck's hideout, Launchpad comments that it'd be difficult to find as it's not like he'd have a sign out in front, only to see a building looking like a movie theater with Negaduck's face on it.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Averted with Honker, who gets nowhere in trying to help Darkwing by reading up on molecular biology, because the subject is, in his own words "a little over [his] head." Nonetheless, he's still a Child Prodigy who finds particle beam physics a subject he's more comfortable tackling.
  • Protection Racket: With Darkwing too old to protect the town, Negaduck threatens to harm anyone in St. Canard who doesn't pay him off.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Upon learning that he accidentally gave his most hated enemy a super power, Negaduck pounds his fists while shouting that it's not fair. He then tries to cover by insisting this was all part of his plan.
  • Rapid Aging: A side effect of Darkwings new Super Speed.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Subverted. Darkwing doesn't have the assumed powers that would complement his new Super-Speed, such as friction resistance or Super-Reflexes. The former is solved when Honker puts a non-stick coating on his costume, but the latter is exploited by Negaduck during their first rematch.
  • Shout-Out: Doctors Allen and Garrick are a nod to Barry Allen and Jay Garrick.
  • Super-Speed: Darkwing gets this as a side effect of being zapped by Negaduck's particle accelerator. Unfortunately, he isn't resistant to the air friction he creates when he runs - the first time he shows off his new power, his tail catches on fire. Worse still, it comes with a pretty crippling side effect... Rapid Aging.
  • Technology Marches On: The only reason that Negaduck leaves before finishing off Darkwing is to get a roll of film for his camera.
  • Upside-Down Blueprints: One of the things Darkwing does with his new super speed is single handidly build a new skyscraper in a matter of seconds, but since he held the blueprints upside down the whole building ends up being constructed upside down. Darkwing being Darkwing, he fails to realize his error and instead states that the architect should be sued. He breaks it down again later when he has to run backwards to undo the rapid aging that came with the super speed.
  • Watch Out for That Tree!: Although Darkwing might have super-speed, he still thinks and reacts as he normally does. Negaduck figures this out when he turns a corner on his bike and Darkwing, pursuing him, runs smack into a streetlight.
  • You Do NOT Want To Know: Effectively in charge of the city, Negaduck says he makes the rules. When a reporter asks what's the penalty for breaking one of the rules, Negaduck reaches through a TV screen, grabs him, and shouts this.
