Go To

The girls' day at the Renaissance Fair takes a dark turn when a shapeshifting dragon comes seeking a princess.

Tropes

  • Accidental Misnaming: Everyone keeps calling Ember "Amber". It becomes her Berserk Button.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Zee seems more annoyed that Ember thinks she tastes "barf-tastic" than relieved it means she won't eat her.
  • Balloon Belly: Kara eats enough turkey legs to bypass her Kryptonian metabolism, sporting a gut that pokes out of her shirt and spills over her waistband.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: You want to be a princess, Zee? Enjoy being held captive in a tower by a dragon.
  • Big Eater: Kara eats turkey legs by the dozen; by the time they sit to watch the joust, she has quite the Balloon Belly.
  • Book Ends: Involves a literal book. The story book Barbara reads from in the opening appears again in the end, this time ending with an illustration of the girls defeating Ember.
  • Bound and Gagged: Zee spends much of the episode bound and gagged by Ember. The "gagged" part is important, as it keeps her from using her magic right away.
  • Bratty Food Demand: Kara's increasingly disrespectful demands for turkey legs towards Ember, whose name Kara can't bother to remember correctly.
  • Cosplay: All the girls, save for Kara, attend the fair in costume. Barbara is a medieval minstrel, Jessica is an Elven Ranger (a la Tolkien), Karen a winged fairy, and Zee is a princess in a Pimped-Out Dress. But Diana wears her traditional Amazon outfit since Zee told her to dress as a princess, misunderstanding that she meant a Princess Classic.
  • *Cough* Snark *Cough*: Kara does this to none-too-subtly call Jessica a geek when she sees her friends in fantasy costumes.
  • Damsel in Distress: A large part of the episode revolves around the team attempting to rescue a bound and gagged Zee from a princess-starved Ember.
    • Ember actually bemoans Diana being a powerful warrior and Zee having magic. Not used to princesses that are able to defend themselves.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Zatanna, the one team member best suited for battling a magical opponent, is gagged and speechless for the majority of the fight against Ember. As soon as she has her voice back, the tide turns in the heroes' favor.
  • Dragons Prefer Princesses: Ember only hungers for genuine, royal princesses. Zee, who is only wearing a costume, tastes terrible.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: The falcon chases and attacks Ember and only her.
  • Food Coma: The result of Kara having eaten too many turkey legs, as she's too bloated and tired to notice any of the drama between her friends.
  • Foreshadowing: Early on, Karen mentions reports of people going missing in Renaissance fairs. Not long afterwards, we see Ember attempting to capture someone.
  • Forest Ranger: Jess dresses up as one of these for the fair.
  • Gag Echo: Zee scoffs that Diana looks nothing like a princess, and Ember later says the same, for which Zee thanks her (while literally gagged).
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Ember the humanoid-dragon was originally created as a foe of Zatanna's in her self-titled comic.
    • Supergirl gets hold of a mace and uses it to parry the magic fire blasts like Hawkman and Hawkgirl would.
  • Never Gets Fat: Averted with Kara. While she's said in the past that she can never get full and even then, still looks the same after a big meal, this episode gives her a gut after eating too many turkey legs.
  • No-Sell: The battle against Ember is stacked against all the other girls until Zee is able to join.
  • Oh, Crap!: A lot of these. First when Ember reveals herself to Zee, then when Ember reveals her magic-fire power at the girls, then after she incinerates Babs' "tam-batarangs", and then Zee's tower catches fire during the battle, and when Zee finds herself about to end up in literal crap, and finally when Ember takes her full dragon form.
  • Princess Classic: Ember used to live on a diet of these centuries ago, and expects all princesses to follow this trend even into the modern-day. She is confused about Diana being a warrior princess since from her experience princesses are supposed to be helpless and in need of saving by knights.
  • Renaissance Fair: The episode takes place in one. All the girls are into it, except for Kara (who is only there for the turkey legs and to laugh at geeks) and Diana (who finds it frivolous and is confused by the historical inaccuracies), but none more so than Zee, who plays the role of princess to the hilt.
  • Rule of Three: Ember has three forms, goes after three different princesses at the fair, suffers three failures trying to nab Zee before succeeding, and then has three words for how Zee tastes to her: "Disgusting! Revolting! Barf-tastic!" Also, Kara comes by thrice to bug her for turkey legs.
  • Running Gag:
    • Diana nitpicks nonstop about the fair's various inaccuracies.
    • Put a mud pen (with pig filth mixed in) on the premises, and someone's sure to end up in it.
  • Scaled Up: Ember turns from a human to a humanoid dragon, and in the climax to a full-sized dragon.
  • Serious Business: Diana won't cater to Zee's princess fantasy because she thinks just being there to look pretty is an insult to the position.
  • Shout-Out:
  • The Snack Is More Interesting: Kara's too busy bloating herself up on turkey legs to pay any attention to Diana and Zee's fighting.
  • Stock Medieval Meal: The Ren Faire's turkey legs which, according to Diana, are the only accurate thing about the faire in question. The only reason for Kara's attendance in the first place, which shows by the time of the joust.
  • Storybook Opening: The episode begins with a storybook about dragons and princesses, as Barbara sings the story in the style of a medieval minstrel.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: Ember finds the taste of Zee revolting, upon discovering she's not a real princess.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The falcon isn't seen again after last being shown chasing Ember around. In fact, everybody else at the fair has managed to flee the scene very quickly.
