Jack: Let's recap, <Player's Name>. We've got a gang leader who was poisoned and then suffocated.

In Beijing, China, the Bureau begins their investigation regarding orphaned children being kidnapped by SOMBRA, as the city has been marked as the most affected part of the country. However, after some insistence to Chief Ripley, Jack manages to bargain a free evening to visit the Great Wall, which of course gets put to a halt after he and the player find the body of gang leader Fang Cheng suffocated with a plastic bag.

Tropes:

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Tsukada Chieko, a Japanese orphaned teen living in China as a waitress, is shown to be very serious and straight to the point whenever you talk to her.
  • Asshole Victim: Not only the victim was a criminal and Karma Houdini who evaded justice by bribing officials, but he also beat children working under him with his belt until they bled. It's no surprise that his wife decided to murder him.
  • Brainwash: After you find SOMBRA has been recruiting exclusively orphaned children, Marina deduces that they're planning to indoctrinate them so they get brainwashed with their ideals, giving SOMBRA an army of future agents loyally working under them.
  • Call-Back:
    • Sanjay Korrapati reappears as a suspect.
    • Ronin Ozawa appears on a video footage of him speaking with Sanjay telling him to be "a good boy" and he'll have a bright future ahead.
  • Cannot Tell a Joke: April and June attempt to say Lars' usual "Knock Knock" Joke, but it they end up mangling it, confusing Jack.
Lars: Okay, girls, you haven't quite perfected your knock knock jokes...
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Cheng and Yun knew each other ever since they were little kids living in the streets.
  • Corrupt Bureaucrat: Hei Qian, a government official who took bribes from Cheng so he could continue stealing without repercussions, although he claims Cheng was doing a favor to children by providing them shelter and food.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Chieko's parents died in a car accident when the whole family was visiting China, which has become a point of grief for her and her brother ever since.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Yun claims she murdered Cheng because she wanted to protect the children who were being abused by him.
  • Drinking on Duty: You catch Dupont red-handed drinking from a cognac bottle that you found as a clue.
    Dupont: <Player's Name>! I didn't expect you so soon.
Jack: Is that our evidence you're drinking?!
Dupont: This Cognac is simply too good to waste! I thought a little tipple... ou trois... wouldn't hurt...
  • The Fagin: The victim was the leader of a pickpocket gang who gave orphaned kids shelter in exchange for them stealing from tourists.
  • Family of Choice: Bai Bai sees Cheng's gang as his real family after suffering Parental Abandonment.
Jack: So you were really part of Cheng's gang?
Bai Bai: It was more like a family! It was better than anything I'd had before. Even when my "real" parents were alive, they wanted nothing to do with me. It wasn't like that with Cheng.
  • Hime Cut: Chieko.
  • Improvised Weapon: The murder weapon is a plastic bag.
  • It's All About Me: Yun, the victim's wife, didn't care about her husband getting his money by pickpocketing as long as it was spent on her.
Yun: A little pickpocketing never hurt anybody! These tourists can afford to lose a few valuables. Besides, it's all for a good cause - me!
  • Lampshade Hanging: After you find the body.
Jack: Can't we do just one evening of sightseeing without you tripping over a dead body?!
  • Meaningful Name: Dupont explains how Bai Bai's name means "in vain" in Chinese, signifying how his parents saw him as a burden and that's probably why they abandoned him.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Yun decided to kill her own husband for physically abusing children instead of just handing him to justice.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Subverted. Despite leaving a generous tip to Chieko and accepting that she left the gang without repercussion, Cheng was still a terrible person who stole, bribed officials, and beat kids up.
  • Parental Abandonment: Bai Bai was abandoned by his parents before being recruited into Cheng's gang, which according to Dupont is commonly sad in China due to its strict one-child policy.
  • Parental Substitute: Bai Bai claims that Cheng was like the father most of the children in his gang never had, either due to them dying or abandoning them. Later Subverted, though, when we discover that he was a child beater who whipped them if they did a bad job.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Before her brother ran away to join "some shady organization", Chieko had a discussion with Hiroshi when she warned him about them, which she laments were the last words she ever said to him.
  • Pulled from Your Day Off: Jack insists getting a free night so he and the player can visit the Great Wall, but they end up stumbling onto the victim's body there, forcing you to investigate.
  • Race Against the Clock: In Chapter 3, you're forced to hurry with the investigation as the Beijing police are demanding the Bureau to leave the case and hand over all the evidence.
  • Rags to Riches: Cheng and Yun used to be poor orphans who lived in the streets until they got rich with Cheng's pickpocketing gang.
  • Recruited from the Gutter: SOMBRA is exclusively recruiting orphaned children living in the streets as part of their indoctrination program, promising them a better life and a bright future if they comply.
  • Recruiting the Criminal: Cheng tried to recruit Sanjay into his pickpocketing gang after he saw the kid steal a necklace, though he refused the offer.
  • Reformed Criminal: Chieko used to be part of Cheng's gang until she decided to quit and live an honest life as a waitress.
Chieko: I've worked hard to go straight. My waitressing job doesn't pay much, but it's more honorable than stealing.
  • Shout-Out: Tsukada Chieko resembles Gogo Yubari.
  • Sinister Suffocation: The victim was killed by being suffocated with a plastic bag.
  • Snooping Little Kid: May once caught Jack and Lars smoking (which apparently is supposed to be secret), and almost reveals it to Angela before Jack hurriedly interrupts her.
  • Sticky Fingers: You find a necklace that Sanjay stole from someone else to make a living, which led to Cheng trying to recruit him in the gang.
  • Street Urchin: The victim's gang was composed entirely of orphans living in the streets who received his protection as long as they worked for him. Bai Bai, one of the members, also becomes a suspect himself.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: The victim was killed by his own wife.
  • I Will Find You: Chieko is completely decided to search for her brother Hiroshi, since he's the only family she has left and fears the organization that recruited him is bad news.
  • X on a Stick: Jack tries to taste the "local cuisine" by ordering a scorpion on a stick from a street food stall, but decides to pass on it after chickening out.
