Stop the presses.
As the Flying Squad has formally joined La Résistance against Mayor Lawson, Isaac and the player are taken by Evie to a barn outside of town that serves as their headquarters to meet up with them. There, they find the body of resistance member Dylan Mitvok tied up and with his legs crushed in the resistance's printing press.

Tropes:

  • Anonymous Benefactor: During the Additional Investigation, you discover an anonymous person has been leaving money and gems in a scarecrow near the resistance's base for them to operate. After some investigation, you discover this person to be none other than Lady Highmore.
  • Asshole Victim: Downplayed. The victim was a Justice Corps spy who infiltrated the resistance to take them down from the inside, though he gradually went through a Heel–Face Turn until he was officially on their side, which prompted Captain Beatty to kill him.
  • The Bartender: Tomas "Smokey" Marin, the owner of the café that serves as the Local Hangout for the Justice Corps, appears as a suspect.
  • The Bus Came Back: Giulietta Capecchi returns as the Resistance leader after having left Concordia back in Case 36.
  • Call-Back: Katherine Woolf reappears as a suspect, while Lady Highmore and Inspector Jaubert also make an appearance during the Additional Investigation.
  • Code Name: During the Additional Investigation, you trick Inspector Jaubert by giving him fake code names of the supposed resistance leaders.
Jaubert: Did you discover NOTHING during the course of your investigation? Who is "Tater Head"? Or "The Mugwump"?
  • The Commandments: Apparently, Mayor Lawson published a book containing a bunch of these, which the Justice Corps are required to read and follow though.
Evie: It even includes a sort of Ten Commandments, if you will. But there's nothing sacred about these rules, believe me!
It includes treasures like, "You must say 'Mayor Lawson shall never falter!' when ending your conversations."
Then there's this one... "We must remain steadfast. Tomorrow belongs to justice!"
  • Continuity Nod: Giulietta becomes a suspect after you find the locket Seamus gifted to her in Case 28, and during her interrogations, Seamus' death and her threatening Archie during his last Mr. Alastor party is brought up.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Subverted. You find a piece of the rope the killer used to tie Dylan in a seemingly unrelated café that serves as a crime scene, but becomes less of a coincidence when you find out the killer is Captain Beatty, who is a member of the Justice Corps who usually hangs out around said café.
  • Cool Uncle: Judge Takakura is revealed to have a niece called Mildred who is part of the resistance, whom he tried to convince to continue her studies instead of risking her life fighting against Lawson.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The victim was killed by having his legs slowly crushed by a printing press until he bled to death.
  • I Didn't Mean to Kill Him: When you arrest Captain Beatty, he claims he didn't intend to murder Dylan with the press, but "that idiot went and bled to death" while being tortured.
  • Fake Defector: During the Additional Investigation, you're tasked with convincing Inspector Jaubert that the Flying Squad is unanimously loyal to Lawson and prevent getting arrested by him.
  • Faux Horrific: Isaac is absolutely horrified after you show him a pigeon carrying a message.
Isaac: Oh no! That THING is on my shoulder! Get it away from me!
  • Gunpoint Banter: Isaac and Mildred engage in one of these after she takes Evie hostage, accusing you of being spies for the Justice Corps since you freed her uncle's killer in the previous case.
  • Gut Feeling: Katherine claims she had a bad feeling about the victim from the moment she set her sights on him, calling it her journalist's instincts. She turned out to be right.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The victim was originally a spy from the Justice Corps who infiltrated the resistance to dismantle it from the inside, but gradually shifted sides after falling in love with Giulietta and accepting the resistance's ideals.
  • Home Base: La Résistance has one inside of a barn in a farm outside of town, though they're forced to leave it after it becomes compromised due to a death of a Justice Corps members happening there. Fortunately, Lady Highmore provides you with a new one in her own manor at the end of the case.
  • I'm Not Here to Make Friends: Mildred says this word-for-word when you interrogate her about the victim, claiming she wasn't close to him for this reason.
  • Improvised Weapon: The murder weapon is a printing press.
  • Incredibly Obvious Bomb: Mildred built one of these, thinking the resistance lacked spine and Lawson could only be taken down through violence. However, the victim ratted her out to Giulietta, forcing her to stop her plans.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When you arrest Captain Beatty for the murder, he smugly tells you nothing will happen to him due to being part of the Justice Corps. Cue Judge Umbright sentencing him to life in prison.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Upon finding out Dylan had defected to the resistance's side, Captain Beatty tied him up and slowly crushed his legs with the printing press in an effort to make him talk, but Dylan died before anything could be said.
  • Lead Police Detective: Captain Bill Beatty, the Head of Clandestine Operations for the Justice Corps, appears as the killer.
  • Local Hangout: Smokey's Café is this for the Justice Corps, which is where Captain Beatty and Dylan met up to discuss his advances on investigating La Résistance.
  • The Lost Lenore: Seamus has become this for Giulietta, which is why she bluntly rejected the victim's advances.
Giulietta: You know my heart still belongs to Seamus. I couldn't even dream of being with another!
  • The Mole: Dylan was one of these for the Justice Corps, originally infiltrating La Résistance with the intent of disbanding them, although he ended up undergoing a Heel–Face Turn
Bill: Your victim, Dylan Mitvok, was one of my subordinates!
Isaac: Dylan was working for the Justice Corps?!
Bill: He was indeed. He infiltrated the resistance on my orders.
  • Morality Chain Beyond the Grave: When Mildred takes Evie hostage and threatens to shot her because the Flying Squad set free her uncle's killer, Isaac and Evie calm her down by saying they only did what Judge Takakura would've wanted, as he would've never imposed the death sentence on anyone.
  • Parental Substitute: Tomas Marin wanted to become this for the victim, since he was a good friend of Dylan's father, who ended up dying when Dylan was just a child. However, Dylan wanted nothing to do with it.
  • Race Against the Clock: During the Additional Investigation, Inspector Jaubert gives you until the end of the day to give him a report regarding the resistance's activities, otherwise he'll have the entire Flying Squad arrested.
  • Rebel Leader: After coming back to Concordia, Giulietta assumed this role for La Résistance.
Giulietta: Yes, I know what you think. A gangster's daughter, claiming to defend the people... but I know first hand how bad people like Lawson can get! Somebody has to stop him!
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: When you arrest Beatty, he is positive his status in the Justice Corps will save him from punishment for Dylan's murder. The Corps and Lawson remove his name from their records (or fire him without telling him), and thus he's now just an average citizen... who gets sentenced to life.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Spy Cam: Katherine planted one of these in a luggage to spy on the victim, as her Gut Feeling told her he was up to no good.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Giulietta tells you the victim had fallen in love with her, which he demonstrated by following her anywhere no matter how creepy it seemed.
  • Stern Old Judge: This case introduces Judge Umbright, an old no-nonsense judge appointed by Mayor Lawson after Takakura's death.
  • Tap on the Head: The victim was first knocked with a heavy object before being tied up and crushed with the printing press.
  • The Team Benefactor: Lady Highmore goes from Anonymous Benefactor to this after you request her to keep aiding La Résistance and provide them a place to say, which she does by letting them use her manor as a Home Base.
  • Tempting Fate: The following exchange:
Isaac: Either way, we must try and keep this from Lawson and his Justice Corps for as long as po-
Evie: <Player's Name>, there's somebody here to see you!
    He's from the Justice Corps!
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: Bill Beatty insists on being called CAPTAIN Beatty. He even does this during his trial, which Judge Umbright finds annoying.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The locket Seamus gifted to her serves as this for Giulietta.
