Maddie: Charlie tells me the airship has reached Grim Chapel! Everything does look so quaint from up here! However, Grim Chapel is rumored to have a bit of a dark, supernatural side...

The Flying Squad makes its way to Grim Chapel, an old and rustic district rumored to be haunted by the supernatural, to investigate about the Rochester family's alleged deals with the devil and how their enemies supposedly die in "freaky" accidents there. After getting lost in the district's woods, it doesn't take long before Maddie and the player come across the body of local healer Aubrey Miller, dead after being tied up and drowned in a pond with the word "WITCH" carved in her chest.

Tropes:

  • The Apprentice: Abigail Walcott worked as the victim's apprentice in her healing workshop, which she took advantage of to get close to Aubrey's husband and have an affair with him.
  • The Blacksmith: William, the victim's husband, works as the local Grim Chapel blacksmith.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: According to George, supernatural themes have been so ingrained in Grim Chapel's history that it has become part of their very culture and existence, even if such things don't actually exist.
Maddie: Surely, this Aubrey Miller was not actually a witch...
George: Perhaps not, but this is Grim Chapel, my friends. We are no strangers to the supernatural. It's what makes this enchanting town of ours so unique!
  • Cursed Item: During the investigation, Charlie tells you he found a rabbit's foot lying at the town square, and the residents told him it was a cursed item that would grant him bad luck for 15 years, which he supposedly "confirmed" when a cart almost ran him over. Of course, Maddie doesn't believe any of this, and decides to calm him down with a kiss.
  • Eats Babies: Abigail claims she saw the victim doing this due to being a witch, in addition of summoning demons and flying on a broom. Come her second interrogation, and it's revealed she's just lying as part of her ploy to slander Aubrey's reputation.
  • Expert Consultant: George Okamoto is a historian who happens to be an expert regarding the history and folklore of Grim Chapel, and so Maddie and the player speak with him during the Additional Investigation to learn more about the supposed Devil inhabiting the district.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: George Okamoto is an old gentleman who also happens to be very well educated regarding the history of Grim Chapel.
  • Hidden Villain: When you interrogate Larry in prison, he claims that even he doesn't know who The Devil really is, as they always work in the shadows while disguising themselves as an urban legend.
  • Karma Houdini: Despite being the one who spread the rumor about Aubrey being a witch and indirectly getting her murdered, Abigail doesn't receive any kind of punishment for her actions, and is even implied she might get a happy ending now that she's free to be with William without Aubrey interfering.
  • Kill It with Fire: During the Additional Investigation, you find a piece of paper with instructions about how to create fireballs by combining chemicals that, if used on a person, would make it appear they were killed by a supernatural spontaneous combustion. Thanks to this, you discover that "The Devil" who inhabits Grim Chapel is a real person who helps others commit murder while disguising it as a supernatural occurrence.
  • The Lost Woods: Grim Chapel is mostly surrounded by woods, which leads to Maddie and the player getting lost.
Maddie: <Player's Name>, from the airship, it didn't seem like so much of Grim Chapel was woods... I think we're lost!
  • Magical Abortion: Cordelia accused the victim of putting a "curse" on her with witchery, which led to Cordelia always suffering from a miscarriage whenever she was pregnant and incited her to kill Aubrey.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: During the Additional Investigation, you learn that "The Devil" inhabiting Grim Chapel is a Professional Killer who provides clients with means to murder others while making it appear like a freaky supernatural accident, such as chemicals that create fireballs and simulate spontaneous combustion.
  • Malicious Slander: Abigail spread rumors accusing Aubrey of being a witch to discredit everything she said, as she discovered Abigail was having an affair with her husband William and such claims would've ruined Abigail's reputation.
  • The Man Behind the Man: While Larry was the one who willingly murdered Deputy Mayor Sandra Hwang, it's revealed that The Devil is the one who provided him with the "spooky" elements necessary to carry out the plan, namely the mechanical box that made it appear Sandra's heart was still beating outside of her body.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Cordelia murdered Aubrey for supposedly being a witch and putting a curse on her that made Cordelia suffer a miscarriage with all her pregnancies when everything was in fact just a rumor started by Abigail to slander Aubrey's reputation.
  • Plot-Inciting Infidelity: The events that led to Aubrey's death were the result of her catching Abigail having an affair with her husband, as Abigail feared Aubrey was going to tell everyone about it so she started the rumor that Aubrey was a witch to discredit her, which made a grief-struck Cordelia believe Aubrey had placed a miscarriage curse on her and that she deserved to die for it.
  • "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: The supposed Devil living in Grim Chapel who has been helping the Rochesters dispose of their enemies in "freaky" accidents is revealed to be a normal person who, for a price, provides means to commit murder while making it appear like a supernatural occurrence.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The victim, Aubrey Miller, resembles Amy Adams.
    • Cordelia Putnam is a reference of Ann Putnam, a prominent figure in the Salem Witch Trials.
    • Abigail Walcott is a named after Abigail Williams and Mary Walcott, two prominent figures in the Salem Witch Trials.
  • The Storyteller: In addition to being a local historian, George Okamoto is also a folklorist who provided information regarding the legends of Grim Chapel this way.
  • Tap on the Head: The killer struck Aubrey in the head with a rock before tying her up to a wooden plank and submerging her in the pond to drown.
  • Too Desperate to Be Picky: Despite claiming that she doesn't believe in witches or magic, Hope Woodford still decided to pay Aubrey a visit to search for her missing sister, as Hope heard Aubrey was an authentic witch and she was getting desperate due to not having any leads about her sister's whereabouts.
  • Ungrateful Townsfolk: William, the victim's husband, calls the inhabitants of Grim Chapel ungrateful by calling her a witch that deserved to die despite Aubrey always helping them with her medicine expertise.
William: How could these people be so ungrateful and accuse my wife of being a witch?! After everything that Aubrey did for them!
  • I Will Find You: Hope Woodford, a young woman you meet as a suspect, is seen searching for her sister Faith, as she disappeared a month ago and is getting so desperate she paid Aubrey a visit, believing that she could do something with her supposed witch powers.
  • Witch Hunt: Grim Chapel has a history with these, if George's words are to be believed.
George: How dreadful! This town has a long history of witch-hunts, and that dunking bar is a relic from those times. Horrible to learn the practice has been revived!
