What? You don't bathe with your boots on?

While waiting for Vinnie Costa to testify against Vittorio Capecchi and his illegal business in Coyote Gorge, Maddie and the player decide it's almost time and go to his room in the Fat Chance Saloon so they can escort him to trial. Unfortunately, things turn for the worse when they find Vinnie's lifeless body in the room's bath, dead after having his throat slashed with a broken glass bottle.

Tropes:

  • After-Action Patch-Up: After the first showdown against Vittorio and his goons, Evie gets shot in the shoulder and has to be tended by Dick for the rest of the Additional Investigation, appearing bandaged up after having the bullet extracted.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Subverted. During the Flying Squad's showdown against The Mafia, both parties have to stop to reload and find more ammunition before engaging on a second round.
  • Call-Back: Catastrophe Joan, Franca Capecchi, and Clay Westwood reappear as suspects. Katherine Woolf also briefly reappears during the Additional Investigation.
  • Cliffhanger: The case ends with the Flying Squad chasing a wounded Vittorio to his hacienda after having escaped from their showdown, intending to arrest him and end his reign of terror over Coyote Gorge once and for all.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: Being a saloon owner in the middle of the Wild East, Alberto is already familiarized with death, which is why he doesn't flinch when you inform him about Vinnie's murder.
Alberto: Lady, this is Coyote Gorge. You can't take a leak without wizzin' on a dead body.
  • Continuity Nod: The death of Vinnie's father at the hands of Father Donovan is brought up again.
  • Conveniently Timed Distraction: The killer set up an explosive trap with cans and gunpowder in order to distract Rose (who was mounting guard in Vinnie's room) and get the chance to murder Vinnie.
  • Deadly Bath: Vinnie was killed while taking a bath in a bathtub.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Clay justifies Vinnie's murder with this, claiming that he had to kill him or else his testimony against Vittorio would be detrimental to Coyote Gorge's "gentrification" plan that Vittorio brainwashed his followers with.
  • Enemy Mine: Rose and Joan decide to set aside their differences and join forces to take down Vittorio during the showdown against him and his goons, as both of them despise him.
  • Girls with Moustaches: During one of her analyses, Viola is seen sporting a fake mustache she's using for one of her upcoming plays.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: Joan calls Vittorio a "slippery son of a gun" during one of her interrogations.
  • He Knows Too Much: Clay killed Vinnie because he knew about Vittorio's affairs and this testimony would've ruined the supposed "great plans" he has for Coyote Gorge, as Clay believes Vittorio is going to improve everyone's lives with the railroad without considering the fact that he's driving people out of their homes.
  • Horse Jump: Clay sent a threatening message to Vinnie because he injured his horse when Vinnie tried to escape Benjamin's farm with one of these.
  • Locked Room Mystery: Vinnie's death becomes this due to his room being completely locked from the inside at the time of his murder and the only persons with keys to his room being Rose and Alberto. As it turns out, the killer stole Alberto's master key, murdered Vinnie after unlocking the room, then locked it again.
  • Mistaken for Romance: When you find a photo of Franca and Vinnie looking at each other affectionately, Maddie is inclined to believe they were having an affair behind Vittorio's back. However, Franca clarifies that Vinnie was just a close family friend, and you find nothing to dispute those claims.
  • Mushroom Samba: Evie gets high on anesthesia after Dick treats her bullet wound, leading her to see Katherine with an unicorn and accidentally confess her feelings for her.
  • Non-Nude Bathing: Vinnie was taking a bath with his boots put on at the time of his murder. According to Dick, cowboys like to bathe with their hats and boots on so they're ready to run in an emergency.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Just like her previous encounter, Franca has this reaction when you interrogate her as a suspect.
Franca: Mamma mia! You people again! I can't throw a macaroni away without you showing up!
  • One of Our Own: Rose becomes a suspect in this case due to her being one of the few people capable of entering Vinnie's room, as she was supposed to be bodyguarding him before his trial.
  • Only a Flesh Wound: Evie manages to recover pretty quickly from her bullet wound, only requiring Dick to extract the bullet and bandage her. She still gets high on the anesthesia though.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: Vittorio sends a live rattlesnake inside of a package to the Flying Squad as a warning, something that horrifies Evie and Maddie. However, Dick finds it fascinating and decides to keep it.
  • Saloon Owner: Alberto Salucci, the owner of the Fat Chance Saloon Vinnie was staying in, appears as a suspect.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The residents of the town the case takes place pack everything and run to safety for unknown reasons until you discover it's because Vittorio and his goons are in town and want to challenge the Squad to a duel.
  • Shipper on Deck: Diego appears to be very supportive of Evie and Katherine's growing relationship, telling Maddie that "some rest and romance" should be enough to cure her of her bullet wound.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Showdown at High Noon: Vittorio challenges the entire Flying Squad to one of these during the Additional Investigation, with Isaac, Maddie, Rose, and the player engaging on a gunfight against him and his goons. The battle ends with both Evie and Vittorio getting non-lethally shot and the latter escaping to his hacienda.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: Catastrophe Joan confesses that she wanted to kill Vinnie because his father murdered a friend of hers when he was still alive and wanted to enact revenge on his son.
  • Sixth Ranger: During the Additional Investigation, Diego tells you that he intends to become this for the Flying Squad, wanting to submit a petition to join the organization as a consultant.
  • Skeleton Key: Clay managed to enter Vinnie's room and create a Locked Room Mystery by stealing Alberto's master key which allowed him to unlock every room in the saloon.
  • Slashed Throat: How Vinnie was killed, courtesy of a broken bottle.
  • Spit Take: Franca does this with a glass of alcohol when you ask her if she was having an affair with Vinnie, spitting most of it in Maddie's face.
  • Tempting Fate: Isaac says one at the beginning of the case regarding Vinnie and Rose.
Isaac: Thanks to Vinnie Costa feeling remorse for accidentally killing one such farmer on Vittorio's orders, we've now got a prime witness ready to testify against Capecchi!
With Rose standing guard, there's nothing to fear!
  • We Used to Be Friends: Franca claims that Vinnie used to be a good friend of the Capecchis, who took him under their wing as a close family fiend. However, his betrayal by accepting to testify against Vittorio led to them breaking their fellowship with him.
  • What Is This Feeling?: When Katherine visits Evie (who was still high in anesthesia), Evie says that, for some reason, she starts to feel butterflies every time she sees Katherine and doesn't know the reason.
