— The New Season 2 Theme Song

2x01 - "Where is Josh's Friend?"

Written by Aline Brosh McKenna, Rachel Bloom and Marc Webb, directed by Marc Webb. Original airdate October 21, 2016.

Rebecca is convinced Josh is in love with her, while Greg is nowhere to be found. Paula is coming to terms with what drove her obsession with Rebecca's love life, while Darryl and White Josh try to navigate their new relationship.

Songs:

"I'm Just a Girl in Love" (New theme song sung by Rachel Bloom)

  • Love Makes You Crazy: "You can't call her crazy / 'Cause if you call her crazy / You're just calling her in love!"
  • Overly Long Gag: A subtle one: when Rebecca pokes her face through the picture of Josh, shouts "Blam!" and grins cheesily at the camera, the shot is held for a few seconds more than is comfortable. In fact, it lends her a vague Jack-Torrance peering-through-the-broken-door vibe.

"Love Kernels" (sung by Rachel Bloom)

  • Affectionate Parody: Of Beyoncé's Lemonade.
  • All Deserts Have Cacti: It makes sense for this video because it takes place in California and also inside Rebecca's mind.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall:
This video ate up our production budget
    (Love kernels)
We used up literally every cent
    (Love kernels)
Darryl is now played by a broom on a stand
    • Amazingly, this gag is justified because it supports the song's point that Rebecca is trying to make the best of what she's been given.
  • Insane Troll Logic: At one point, Rebecca is remembering all of the "love kernels" Josh has given her. One of them is Josh saying "Where's my phone?" Rebecca shrugs and says, "It's a stretch, but I'll take it, too."
  • Love Hungry: The entire song is about how Rebecca is hungry for Josh's "love kernels," his compliments about her that secretly indicate he is in love with her. Or they just indicate that he's being nice.
  • Metaphorgotten: The song turns Josh's compliments into "love kernels" which Rebecca gathers up and turns into popcorn and then eats. And then her tears become water which she drinks because all that popcorn made her thirsty.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: At the end of the clip, Cactus Rebecca shows to be in pain and drops her arms on spot, showing that sustaining the position of a cactus for so long clearly strained her arms.

"We Should Definitely Not Have Sex Right Now" (sung by Rachel Bloom and Vincent Rodriguez III)

  • Intercourse with You: A variation as the song is about them trying not to have sex...and failing.
  • One Last Job: Josh compares them having sex one last time to movies where criminals decide to have "one last heist." Of course, he then points out that those movies generally have a sequel.
  • Pastiche: Of 80s/90s soul-jazz and R&B, e.g. Sade, Anita Baker, Alexander O'Neal.
  • Vow of Celibacy: Both Rebecca and Josh vow to not have any more sex until they talk to Greg about their relationship. This lasts all of ten seconds.
