Recap / Crazy Ex-Girlfriend S1E18: "Paula Needs to Get Over Josh!"

Go To

What’s that look on your face? You're horrified. You think I'm a monster for doing your dirty work.
You think love is stainless and pure,
But beneath all the fantasy, there's filth and there's gore!

Written by Rene Gube, directed by Aline Brosh McKenna. Original airdate April 18, 2016.

Rebecca's relationships are tested as she tries to navigate her friendship with Paula, her history with Josh and her connection with Greg. While at Josh's sister Jayma's wedding, Rebecca's world is turned upside down.

Songs:

"After Everything I've Done For You (That You Didn't Ask For)" (sung by Donna Lynne Champlin)

  • Affectionate Parody: Of "Rose's Turn" from Gypsy.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Paula is manipulative, but usually very nice to Rebecca. Not anymore.
  • BSoD Song
  • Freudian Slip: Paula accidentally calls herself Rebecca's mother and then said that she lived in her womb, before catching herself and saying "figuratively."
  • Hypocritical Humor: "God! Will your lies never end?" Paula sings after she's already sang about all the morally questionable things she's done.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Paula finally decides to stop being Rebecca's friend since Rebecca lied to her.

"One Indescribable Instant" (sung by Lea Salonga)

  • Affectionate Parody: Of a Disney Princess song, sung by an actual Disney Princess (Lea Salonga was the singing voice of both Jasmine and Mulan). More specifically, it's a parody of the Sleeping Beauty song "I Wonder" and "Once Upon a Dream."
  • Diegetic Switch: Aunt Myrna first sings this at the wedding, and the song continues to play as Rebecca and Josh leave it and have sex.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: Rebecca attempts to sing the song herself thrice, but fails because everyone else refuses to play along. While she's been on key in her previous imagined musical numbers, an attempt to perform this song while dressed as a princess reveals her to be a Dreadful Musician.note

Tropes in this episode:

  • Disney Creatures of the Farce: Rebecca imagines herself as a Disney princess speaking to a little bird at her window about how she's going to confess to Greg, before attempting to break out into song.
Bird: [subtitle] I just remembered I could fly. Peace, bitch.
  • Foreshadowing: Greg's alcoholism that becomes a plot point in Series 2 is hinted at in this episode when he passes out drunk at the wedding.
  • Internal Reveal: Rebecca confesses to Josh that she moved to West Covina for him.
  • Shout-Out: Rebecca's blue dress and the magic carpet that she and Josh kiss on at the end is a shout out to Aladdin. This also counts as a Casting Gag as guest star Lea Salonga was the singing voice of Princess Jasmine.
  • Special Guest: Lea Salonga cameos as Josh's Aunt Myrna.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Greg and Darryl describe Jayma's wedding decor near-identically — "a chain hotel with vaguely French decor, with Italian food being served tapas-style, while a Filipino girl is marrying a Jewish guy, all in a lightly Arabian Nights-style wedding." Greg hates it, Darryl loves it.
  • Wedding Episode: Jayma and Phillip get married in this episode, so Rebecca reconsiders her relationships as a guest.
