Recap / Camp Camp S 2 E 12 Parents Day

Go To

In the season 2 finale, David invites the parents of the campers to come visit. To Campbell's dismay, the future of the camp now hinges on everything going smoothly.

Tropes:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Gwen is still referring to Max as "little shit," but warmly.
  • Berserk Button: Buzz Aldrin, Space Kid's uncle, found out about the fake moon landing Gwen and David staged, and he is pissed.
  • Brick Joke: A lot of the chickens from various episodes in season 2 come home to roost in the finale.
    • Buzz Aldrin saw the fake moon landing tape Gwen and David made in "Space Camp Was A Hoax", and punches David in the face for it.
    • Mr. and Mrs. Fartz show up, and are entirely nonplussed to find out that their son has been traded to a different camp.
    • In "Quartermaster Appreciation Day," Quarter-Sister nostalgically mentions that she has an STD named after her. After Neil's dad and Nikki's mom hook up, she warns him to "get yourself tested for Quarter-Sister."
  • Broken Bird: Despite his rage and cynicism, Max is revealed to be just a lonely kid whose parents don't care about him.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Let's just say that Max's bitter remarks about summer camp being an excuse to abandon kids didn't come out of nowhere...
    • Harrison mentioning that being unable to make something reappear takes a darker turn when one of the things he disappeared was his brother.
    • The pair of FBI agents monitoring Cameron Campbell? Ered's dads.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Lt. Houston is embarrassed by his son Dolph's lack of masculinity - and not his worrying similarities to Adolf Hitler.
    • Mrs. Nurfington doesn't much care for the arts, or what she refers to as "queer shit." When Nurf calls his mom out for being insensitive, she amends her statement to "queer stuff." Nurf can't decide if that counts as an improvement.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The last time we saw Campbell in "Eggs Benefits", he had hopped on a Russian submarine, something Gwen brings up when he appears. The Millers also mention Campbell providing intel on Russia.
    • Nikki's mom Candy believes Nikki was still with the Flower Scouts ("Scout's Dishonor"), and Nikki tells her that she had been chased away.
    • Mrs. Nurfington mentions that she had signed her son up for behavioral correction camp, as stated in "David Gets Hard".
    • As the Millers take him away, Campbell rants that he was once the prime minister of Thailand, mentioned in "Camp Kool Kidz" and "Egg Benefits".
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: Ered's parents do this to her when they witness Candy caught having sex with Carl onstage.
  • Description Cut: After they ditch Parents' Day to get pizza with Max, Gwen asks David if their absence will cause any problems back at camp, and David reassures her that Cameron Campbell has everything under control. Cut to Campbell being dragged off to Super Guantanamo by Ered's dads.
  • Defrosting Ice King: At the end of the episode, David takes Max out for pizza and tells him that he understands why Max is angry, but that he hopes Max can find happiness at Camp Campbell despite how his parents have treated him. Max is uncharacteristically silent during his speech, and finally gives him a split-second hug - before threatening him with death should he ever tell anyone about it.
  • Did I Say That Out Loud: After David and Gwen take Max and ditch the talent show, when they're supposed to perform, Cameron Campbell says aloud something that makes him look extremely guilty in front of everyone around him and is what finally convinces Agents Miller to have him arrested. He immediately regrets it.
Campbell: Oh, don't tell me I lost another kid! (Harrison's and Nerris' parents gasp in shock, and Ered's fathers stand up in anger. Campbell now has an Oh, Crap! expression) Okay, that might sound incriminating, buuuut... (jumps off-stage and starts running)
  • Didn't Think This Through: David set up a Parents' Day so the campers' parents can see just how their children have grown during the summer... and it also lets them see what a con Camp Campbell really is.
  • Foreshadowing: When Space Kid tells Max that his parents weren't able to come for Parents' Day, Max has a brief uncharacteristically genuine moment where he expresses sympathy (then immediately snaps back to his usual disdain when Space Kid mentions that he'll still have his uncle present) — an early hint that his own parents' absence is more hurtful to him than he wants to let on.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Max is adamant that Camp Campbell only exists so parents can forget about their kids for a summer. We later find out that this is not just Max's general cynicism, as this is exactly what happened to him.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Immediately after giving David a split-second hug, Max firmly informs him that said hug never happened. And that murder will occur should anyone learn of it.
  • Mistaken for Santa: When David starts to tell the campers about the big day coming, Nikki thinks he means Christmas instead of Parents' Day, before being corrected. Soon afterward, Cameron Campbell shows up, asking if somebody said Christmas. Space Kid exclaims "Santa!", even though Campbell's only resemblance to the jolly figure is being a man with some amount of gray facial hair who mentions Christmas.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: David's attempts to be a perfect substitute family for Max end up only reinforcing to Max that his actual parents couldn't care less about him.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Max comes off as a sociopathic little asshole so often, it's painful to see him visibly fighting tears when David realizes that his parents more or less abandoned him.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: When Nerris and her parents are onstage for their performance, her father says "Gasp!" out loud when they spot the dragon queen, and her despondent mother (who halfheartedly portrays said "dragon queen") says, "Roar." in a lame attempt at acting.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Faced with the possibility that his dad and Nikki's mom might get married and thus make him and Nikki siblings, Neil tries to make Carl humiliate himself by asking for a philosophy lecture, knowing that his dad will bring out a sock puppet. No such luck, as Candy is in pure Gold Digger mode and takes the opportunity to compliment Carl on being "good with his hands".
  • Wham Shot: When we finally see Max's file, it's shown that his parents didn't even sign him up for an activity at all, thus showing just how much they do not care about him.
  • Why Couldn't You Be Different?: Harrison's parents are completely terrified of him and his Reality Warper abilities, much to his dismay. Given what happened to his brother, they might be justified.
