A Freudian Excuse is specifically a traumatic incident to explain why someone's the way they are, not just any explanation, and Max's example has a duplicate on the Characters page; removed other tropes with duplicates on the Characters page; added trope; No Sell is when a character is immune to an outright attack or ability

* DidntThinkThisThrough: David set up a Parent's Day so the campers' parents can see just how their children have grown during the summer...and it also lets them see what a con Camp Campbell really is.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: When Space Kid tells Max that his parents weren't able to come for Parents' Day, Max has a brief uncharacteristically genuine moment where he expresses sympathy (then immediately snaps back to his usual disdain when Space Kid mentions that he'll still have his uncle present) - an early hint that his own parents' absence [[SourOutsideSadInside is more hurtful to him than he wants to let on]].
* FreudianExcuse: Dolph Houston is actually an American boy raised on an army base in Germany, which explains his accent and certain... other characteristics.
** Preston is so loud because he lives with his grandmother, who's nearly deaf.
** Max's cynicism is caused by the fact that his parents don't care about him.
* TheGhost: Max's parents are conspicuously absent during Parents' Day, but David is sure they'll turn up before it's over. Eventually becomes a major plot point when we learn that Max's parents didn't show up because they don't care about their son.
* GoldDigger: Candy, Nikki's mom, shacks up with Carl because he's a tenured professor with insurance.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Max is adamant that Camp Campbell only exists so parents can forget about their kids for a summer. We later find out this is not just Max's general cynicism, as this is exactly what happened to ''him.''

* MilitaryBrat: Dolph turns out to be the son of an American army lieutenant.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: David's attempts to be a perfect substitute family for Max ended up only reinforcing to Max that his actual parents couldn't care less about him.
* NoSell: Upon finding out that he shares a name with Space Kid, Neil adamantly refuses to call him by his name. First he insists he has dibs on the name since he's been at camp longer - only for Space Kid to point out that he hasn't. Then he argues that he's smarter than Space Kid... and Space Kid just happily agrees.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted; this episode confirms that Space Kid is in fact named Neil Armstrong Jr.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Max comes off as a sociopathic little asshole so often, it's painful to see him visibly fighting tears when David realizes his parents more or less abandoned him.
* ParentalNeglect: We finally get some insight into why Max is constantly so bitter. His parents did not even sign him up for a camp activity, they just wanted him to stay there because they didn't want to take care of him for the summer.
** Nikki's mom to a lesser degree, though Nikki doesn't seem remotely traumatized.
* SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud: When Nerris and her parents are onstage for their performance, her father says "Gasp!" out loud when they spot the dragon queen, and her despondent mother (who halfheartedly portrays said "dragon queen") says, "Roar." [[BadBadActing In a lame attempt at acting]].
* ShippingTorpedo: Faced with the possibility that his dad and Nikki's mom might get married and thus make him and Nikki siblings, Neil tries to make Carl humiliate himself by asking for a philosophy lecture, knowing his dad will bring out a sock puppet. No such luck, as Candy is in pure GoldDigger mode and takes the opportunity to compliment Carl on being "Good with his hands".
* WhamShot: When we finally see Max’s file, it’s shown that his parents didn’t even sign him up for an activity at all, thus showing just how much they do not care about him.
* WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent:
** Harrison's parents are completely terrified of him and his RealityWarper abilities, much to his dismay. Given what happened to his brother, they might be justified.
** There is also Lt. Houston, who is disappointed in how Dolph is so dedicated in a career of art, instead of sports as he insists. Yet, he does not seem to have a problem or not even be aware with Dolph's clear Hitler type mannerisms.
* WouldntHitAGirl: When Buzz Aldrin speaks to Gwen and David about the fake moon landing they staged of Space Kid, he tells Gwen she's lucky he would never hit a woman. David however, is free game, and is promptly decked by Buzz when Max tells him he helped.

* MilitaryBrat: Dolph turns out MistakenForSanta: When David starts to be tell the son campers about the big day coming, Nikki thinks he means Christmas instead of an American army lieutenant.
Parents' Day, before being corrected. Soon afterward, Cameron Campbell shows up, asking if somebody said Christmas. Space Kid exclaims "Santa!", even though Campbell's only resemblance to the jolly figure is being a man with some amount of gray facial hair who mentions Christmas.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: David's attempts to be a perfect substitute family for Max ended end up only reinforcing to Max that his actual parents couldn't care less about him.
