Recap / Camp Camp S 3 E 1 The Fun Raiser

Go To

When the funding for the camp runs out, David and Gwen have to come up with a way to save Camp Campbell from closing. So they steal the Quartermaster's hook hand and task the campers with coming up with fundraiser ideas to replace it.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: David and Gwen get an alarming letter that all of Cameron Campbell's assets have been frozen due to his upcoming trial. At least, that's what the first part says. After that...
David: And there's more! "Please tell Meredith that her father and I love her very much and wish her-" Oh, okay, the rest is just about their daughter.
  • Big Good: For possibly the first time in the series, Max has the moral high ground, and ends up saving the camp.
  • Character Development: At the beginning of the show, Max would've happily let the camp rot. As the series has gone on, he's gradually come to accept the camp and stopped tormenting David just for the hell of it - even going so far as to hug David for half a second in the last episode. He's also revealed that his home life is pretty abysmal. Here, when presented with the opportunity to destroy the camp, he instead opts to step in and save it - solidifying that he really does see the camp as home, for better or for worse.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The episode takes place immediately following the events of "Parents' Day." Cameron Campbell is now in prison, all of his assets have been seized before trial, and Nikki's mom gave Neil's dad the phone number of a sandwich shop.
    • Gwen recalls the events of "Gwen Gets A Job" when she worries she'll have to start sending out resumes again if the camp fails.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Every attempt to raise money only sets the camp back further, until they owe twice the amount they previously did.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Max saves the camp, but he's more than happy to let Quartermaster beat the stuffing out of David and Gwen to do it.
  • Karmic Trickster: Max saves the camp because it's the right thing to do, but he's more than a little gleeful that David and Gwen suffer for stealing the Quartermaster's hook hand.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: After he learns that David and Gwen were the ones who stole his hook hand, Quartermaster beats the tar out of them both.
  • Not So Stoic: Arguably the most expression we've seen from Quartermaster yet; he's absolutely inconsolable without his hand.
  • Villain Ball: David and Gwen definitely Took a Level in Jerkass in order to steal the Quartermaster's hook hand and lie about it to raise money.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The Quartermaster loses his mind when he finds out that David and Gwen were the ones who stole his hook.
QM: You stole an amputee's prosthetic hand for a goddamn PROFIT?!
  • Worthless Yellow Rocks: Nikki decides that digging up buried treasure is the best way to save the camp. She's disappointed that she only ever finds crude oil.
  • Worthy Opponent: Max outright admits his respect for how low David and Gwen were willing to sink to save the camp. David, on the other hand, tells Max he's never been more proud of him for saving the camp.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Quartermaster has no problem choking the life out of Gwen, and considering what she put him through, it's hard to blame him.
