Recap / Camp Camp S 3 E 2 Ered Gets Her Cool Back

Go To

An uncool blunder has left Ered questioning her identity, so she tries to make up for it with a dangerous stunt with help from Nerris. Meanwhile, the other campers try out to be the new "coolest camper."

Tropes:

  • Character Development: Ered has so far only been characterized as cool, and something of a prick. When she loses her status in the eyes of the other campers, she's forced to question what exactly made her cool in the first place. Nerris talks her down from a suicidal skateboard trick and helps her see that she was only cool because she didn't care about what other people thought of her. Ered gets her confidence back and decides that Nerris is actually the coolest kid at camp - because she practices a hobby no one else likes purely because she enjoys it.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Ered is so cool, and such a jerk, because she completely doesn't care about other people. When she starts to notice their opinions of her, she at first loses her coolness - but then starts to become nicer.
  • Foreshadowing: Neil predicts that the camp could be in for "a Scooby-Doo murder mystery, love quadrangle, or an accidental wiretap confession." These are the plots of episodes five, six, and seven, respectively.
  • Hidden Depths: Nerris is fully aware of how uncool her hobby is, but keeps at it because she enjoys it, and she's determined to find people who enjoy it as much as she does.
  • Humiliation Conga: First Ered trips and gets covered in mashed potatoes, then she sprains her ankle, then she falls and gets crapped on by a bird. And then David tells her he thinks she's cool.
  • It's All About Me: Ered's defining character traits are her coolness and her self-centeredness. Nerris theorizes that she's so cool precisely because she doesn't even notice other people, much less their opinions of her.
  • Odd Friendship: The cool extreme sports kid and the fantasy LARP nerd unexpectedly hit it off. Nerris is the camper who sticks by Ered even when she's not cool, and Ered comes to respect Nerris for devoting herself to interests that no one else likes.
  • Self-Deprecation: When Max tells Nerris that she has as much chance of being the coolest camper as Space Kid, Space Kid's response is to excitedly yell "Tied for last place!"
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Nerris convinces Ered that true coolness is about not caring what others think of you. Ered then announces that Nerris is actually the coolest camper because she pursues her LARP and D&D dreams without regard for the social stigma.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: Ered takes her humiliation with relative dignity - up until David tells her that he still thinks she's cool, at which point she runs off screaming into the forest.
