Recap / Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command E 61 Speed Trap

Go To

The fifty-eighth episode of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, in which Team Lightyear boards a derelict spaceship that's on a course to hit Capital Planet's sun.

Tropes associated with this episode include:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: The Carebots were created by the ship's captain to clean the crew's messes. But after viewing them as the mess (for obvious reasons), the robots decide to clean them...
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Louis, the resort manager of San de Soleil, mentions that the last time XR stayed there, he skipped out on his bill, enraged the chambermaid, and stole a bathrobe.
  • Brick Joke: XR is accused of stealing a robe which he quickly denies. Turns out he did, and the rangers force him to give it back.
  • The Butler Did It: Buzz lampshades this after finding out the culprit.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The Rangers found what appears to be a cup holder. It turns out to be the ship's manual guidance system.
  • Enemies List: A Running Gag has XR putting Mira and Booster on his revenge list for saying he should become their butler, ultimately saying they're at the top of the list when they reprogram him to clean after he had been disassembled by the Carebots.
  • Go Through Me: Buzz places 42 in between the planet and the rogue ship, hoping the latter would stop. Only to find out....
  • Horror Comedy: The episode maintains the show's level of humor, but the Carebots are one of the more frightening villains.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When XR starts to freak out that they can't stop the ship, Booster reminds him that they have to be cautious and patient...before Buzz freaks out that he can't stop the ship.
Booster: (calmly) We're dealing with an unknown alien technology. We must exercise caution and patience.
Buzz: (freaking out) WHERE'S THE STINKING THRUSTER CONTROL?!!
  • Madness Mantra: "Carebot is online!"
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Buzz provides three of them while battling the Carebots:
Buzz: I'm a bad odor and you're out of lemon fresh scent! I'm a stubborn mildew stain and you're out of steel wool! I'm red wine and you, my friends, are all out of club soda!
  • Race Against the Clock: The Rangers must stop the rogue ship or else it'll hit the sun and cause a super nova.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: After the fiasco with the Porcelon ambassadors (see below), Team Lightyear is put on speed trap duty.
  • Ridiculously Long Phone Hold: The rangers desperately try to call the resort planet about the impending speeding ship that's about to hit them, only for the manager to stupidly put them on hold. Whether it's because there's someone interrupting him or because of his distrust towards rangers (XR is to blame for that) is unclear.
  • Tempting Fate: Buzz boasts that there's no spaceship he can't fly, before it becomes clear he has no idea how to fly this ship.
  • Thrown Out the Airlock: Buzz defeats the Carebots by luring them all into a waste disposal bay and then flushing them into space.
  • Toilet Humour: A flashback shows Team Lightyear meeting the Porcelons, a species of aliens resembling giant toilets. Unfortunately, Buzz, Mira and XR keep saying the wrong things in front of the Porcelons, accidentally offending them. Then Booster, who's having a Potty Emergency, mistakes the Porcelon ambassador for an actual toilet. Cue Big "NO!" from the rest of the team.
  • Villainous Rescue: Team Lightyear gets trapped on the ship after activating their bombs because the Carebots disconnected 42, but are saved when the Carebots disarm them as well.
  • Wiper Start: Buzz tries to steer the ship away from the sun, but only succeeds in activating the turn signal, a cup holder, seat belts, and, of course, the windshield wipers. Though it later turns out the "cup holder" was actually the main guidance mechanism.
