Recap / Burn Notice S 2 E 10 Do No Harm

Go To

Having barely survived an explosion, Michael is on the run from Carla's goons when he spots a man about to attempt suicide.

  • Arc Words: For the first time, Michael yells in a rage, "I want my life back!"
  • Batman Gambit: Figuring someone in a clinic is working for the scammer and fed them a tip about Kenny, Sam goes down there claiming to have a severe liver problem and desperately wanting help. They tweak the scammer's tipster by having Fiona appear to be running a similar con and offering a supposed miracle drug, knowing full well an enforcer would be called in to break up this deal and getting the opportunity to do some interrogation.
  • Berserk Button: Hurting kids has already been established as Mike's button. However, Fiona and Sam get in on the act with the victim of the week's son.
  • Bigger Is Better in Bed: Fi, mourning her breakup with boyfriend Campbell, hints at this.
Fiona: He was sweet, and cute... and he had other impressive qualities.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Michael spots a man about to attempt suicide and intervenes. He then dedicates himself to helping save the man's son and take down the scammers that robbed him of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Michael at least claims he poisoned his yogurt just on the off chance that Carla stopped by and tried to help herself to his food. She's skeptical, yet still won't take any chances.
  • Despair Event Horizon: With a sick kid and seemingly no way to get his money back, Kenny was prepared to throw himself in front of a bus because he didn't know what else to do.
  • Fingore: Sam slices into his thumb with a knife to freak out an interrogation subject.
  • High-Altitude Interrogation: A variant. Michael and Sam tie up two of the villainess's goons in chairs, put on blindfolds and state one of them is going to squeal while the other goes out the window. Sam does indeed push one of them out, but the chairs were actually secured so he wasn't actually going to die and Michael swiftly gags the guy once he comes to a stop several floors down. The intent was for the screaming to spook the other guy into giving up the info in panic, which he does.
  • Interrupted Suicide: While scoping out possible agents for Carla in the crowd, Michael noticed a frazzled man about to throw himself into traffic. Michael stops him and learns what drove him to this point.
  • Littlest Cancer Patient: The Client of the Week has a son with a chronic heart condition. The scammers gave him pep pills mixed with painkillers.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: With her operation compromised, her sniper dead, and the mission a bust, Carla loses her calm demeanor and a lot of her confidence. She is constantly on edge when questioning Michael and looking ready to lash out.
  • Papa Wolf: The client of the week was willing to kill himself to get his son some insurance money. When he spots the fake doctor who scammed him out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, pumping his son up on pep pills, he goes after the guy and beats the shit out of him.
  • Suddenly Shouting: While getting grilled by Carla, Michael shouts his demands (such as Nate being released from jail), though he gets quiet when saying he wants his life back.
  • Torture Is Ineffective: Downplayed. Actual torture is more trouble than it's worth, but the threat of it or even the perceived intent can help break down someone, especially since the imagination can often come up with something far worse than the reality.
  • Wham Episode: Michael is tasked with figuring out who killed the sniper and compromised the whole operation, kickstarting the new arc of the season.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Sam is skeptical of how Michael made a pretty big promise to the client and a sick child without having any idea how to make good.
  • Worf Effect: Fiona of all people falls victim to this, when she loses a fistfight with con artist Rachel. She gets her own back later, though.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Why Carla tasks Michael with finding the rogue operative. Either he lives up to his reputation and catches the operative, or said operative tries to silence him and is left exposed in the process.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: In response to Carla suspecting him of compromising her operation, Michael is outright incredulous that she thinks he would try to blow himself up to cover his tracks.
