"The key is to have zero expectations, and then you'll never be disappointed."
Gina

Todd meets Yolanda's parents, who don't know she's asexual. Mr. Peanutbutter romances a young waitress. Gina confesses a childhood dream to BoJack.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Space:
    • The International Space Station is retired by being blown up. In reality, this would be considered a highly dangerous move, as to simply blow up the ISS would mean a high possibility of wreckage or debris harming cities and civilians, or other satellites. When the ISS is finally retired, it will likely be deorbited into the Pacific Ocean and burn up during re-entry.
    • As mentioned under Alternate History, Laika is alive and well enough to give a podcast, despite the fact the real Laika died in 1957, mere hours after her flight.
  • Alternate History: The guest on Diane's podcast about the International Space Station is the first woman in space, Laika; this is a reference to the real-life Russian space dog of the same name. As with Secretariat, the show takes great liberties with the Historical Domain Character, as the real-life Laika died in orbit in 1957 (as was expected by the scientists, who were pressured by the government to send her into orbit before enough was known about how to make spacecraft survivable). Curiously, Diane's qualifier of "first woman in space" was unnecessary, since Laika was the first living creature in space of any gender.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Yolanda's mother assumes asexuality is merely a kink she hadn't tried yet.
Mrs. Buenaventura: Asexualize me like one of your French girls, Todd!
  • Coming-Out Story: For Yolanda to her family. At the end of the episode, they are very welcoming of it and gladly accept this trait of her.
  • Commonality Connection: Deconstructed. Todd breaks up with Yolanda, as the fact that they are asexual is the only thing the two have in common, and it is not enough to support a relationship.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Deconstructed in two ways.
    • Todd agreed to do the Zany Scheme with Yolanda because he loved her and her parents didn't seem reasonable about the meaning of "no sex". The dad kicks him out of the house when figuring out he's asexual, but Yolanda comes out of the closet. This leads to them accepting her and Todd wholeheartedly. Todd is stunned that this whole Zany Scheme was reckless, stupid and led to two women assaulting him. He points out to Yolanda that it was unnecessary. Plus, she still lied that he went to college, which wasn't cool, and they break up.
    • Mindy tries to seduce Todd as "payback" for Yolanda sleeping with her boyfriend in high school and turning her into a teen female cuckold. During their fight, Yolanda blurts out that she never actually did the deed with Mindy's ex, because she realized she was asexual. This stops everyone dead cold, and the caption reads "ONE LONG MEANINGFUL CONVERSATION LATER". Todd is stunned that Yolanda would rather have Mindy hate her for the rest of her life than have told the truth sooner.
  • The Ditz: Pickles asks if "chicken salad is a celebrity" after BoJack says that he has a sandwich named after him. Later on, while talking with Mr. Peanutbutter, she recalls Gina's relationship advice in the ladies' room, saying that she "thinks her name was Hamburger," just because Gina happened to order a burger.
  • Do You Think I Can't Feel: Todd spends the whole night lying for Yolanda's sake, fending off her mother and sister, and earning his father's ire. In the end, he gives her a quiet What the Hell, Hero? about it, pointing out that it was unnecessary and she still lied about him having a college career showing that she's actually embarrassed about the kind of person he is.
  • Fallback Marriage Pact: Variation, Todd and Yolanda agree to give their relationship another go if they're still both single at 100.
  • Footsie Under the Table: Mindy tries to flirt with Todd by rubbing her foot against his leg at dinner.
  • Foreshadowing: BoJack mistakes the set of Philbert's bedroom with his own house. This is an early instance of how messed up he would become when fully losing the thread between what's him and what's Philbert.
  • Funny Background Event: Just try to read all the decor in Yolanda's bedroom!
  • Furry Reminder: While they're fighting, Yolanda tears off her sister's arms. Being an axolotl, she regenerates them.
  • Hollywoo Tone Deaf: Gina's singing is a bit stilted and hesitant when trying to demonstrate her singing abilities to Flip and Princess Carolyn at BoJack's insistence, cracking when she nears the final note.
Princess Carolyn: (to BoJack) That was just mean, to her and to us.
  • Informed Attribute: Played for Laughs. Yolanda and her sister, Mindy, wear the same clothes, except the former wears white and purple and the latter wears blue and white. Despite this, Yolanda refers to Mindy's outfit as slutty while Mindy describes Yolanda's outfit as prudish.
  • Irony: Yolanda, who is asexual, also happens to be the only person in her family whose career doesn't involve sex: her dad writes erotic novels, her mom is an adult film star, and her twin sister writes a sex advice column.
  • Mrs. Robinson: Yolanda's mother attempts to seduce Todd, ironically so he can teach her about asexuality.
  • Parallel Porn Titles: Yolanda's mother claims to have starred in porn parodies for every movie John Hughes ever made. Titles she specifically mentions include: Sixteen Cans, Titty in Pink, The Breakfast Chub, Homo Bone, Cum Kind of Wonderful, Penis Bueller Gets Off, and Planes, Trains and Autoeroticmobiles.
  • Put on a Bus: Todd breaks up with Yolanda, though they end the relationship on amicable terms and don't rule out seeing each other in the future. That's the last we see of Yolanda for the rest of the series.
  • Reading the Stage Directions Out Loud: BoJack messes up and says his stage cues out loud while shooting Philbert. Princess Carolyn proposes to make this a regular feature of the show.
Princess Carolyn: It's confusing, which means the show is daring and smart.
  • Scooby-Dooby Doors: A somewhat realistic variation, as Todd goes from one door to the next to the music of Edvard Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King. At one point, he even says, "Zoinks!"
  • Shout-Out: Yolanda's family name is Buenaventura, a play on two famous streets near Hollywood, Buena Vista Street in Burbank and Ventura Boulevard in San Fernando (where Studio City is located).
  • Spaghetti Kiss: Averted, when Mr. Peanutbutter and Pickles share the same strand, they simply groan and look away from each other.
  • Take That!: Between listening to an awkward podcast by Diane with his new girlfriend and listening to Twenty One Pilots new single, Mr. Peanutbutter quickly decides for the awkwardness of the podcast.
  • Title Drop: During Diane's interview of Laika, she mentions what is "Planned Obsolescence" - the creation of something with the intention that, given a period of time, it'll become unusable or useless. Diane describes her marriage as it.
  • Twin Switch: Played for Laughs. Yolanda "borrows" Mindy's clothes so she can pose as her sister and tell her mother that Todd made a pass at her. Mindy sees that Yolanda left her clothes and switches as her to seduce Todd. Todd naturally gets confused with Spot the Impostor and asks if he is still Todd.
