Recap / Bojack Horseman S 1 E 10 One Trick Pony

Go To

BoJack shoots a movie at Mr. Peanutbutter's house; Diane finishes her book.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Species Change: In-universe example. BoJack is a horse in "real life," but becomes an alien in the fictionalized "Mr. Peanutbutter's Hollywoo Heist".
  • Adaptational Villainy: A documentary about Mr Peanutbutter getting married to Diane with BoJack as a minor character gets derailed as Mr. Peanutbutter is given a single catchphrase of dialogue, Diane spends most of the movie giving long monologues about her own mental issues, and turns into a B-Movie alien flick, with BoJack being made from a minor character into the Big Bad, an alien Evil Overlord in control of the planet.
  • Adapted Out: Eventually, BoJack as a character is completely written out of the movie adaptation when the concept is changed to that of "a bi-monthly pack of snacks".
  • Best Served Cold: Subverted. It seems like Todd is actively sabotaging the movie to get revenge for BoJack sabotaging his space opera, but when BoJack confronts him about it, Todd says the thought never occurred to him. All of his suggestions to "improve" the project were completely sincere.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Todd's first idea is legitimate for changing the movie; he points out that the movie is about Mr. Peanutbutter marrying Diane, but Diane is a Satellite Love Interest and she isn't given any depth. The problem is that Quentin Tarantulino then decides to make the movie all about Diane and reduce Mr. Peanutbutter to a bit character.
  • Fake American: In-Universe. Naomi Watts speaks in an affected American accent throughout so she could stay in character as "Diane". She uses her natural Australian accent at the end when she is replaced by a tennis ball on a stick.
  • Hope Spot: When Todd accidentally causes film production to go off the rails, BoJack tells Diane that he takes solace in the fact that he'll be reading her book knowing it will be good. Then he does read it, finding out she turned his ghostwritten autobiography into a biography called "One Trick Pony" about the past few months that she spent with him.
  • It's All About Me: Diane doesn't show any concern that she hurt BoJack's feelings by revealing a lot of confidential information about him, without asking for his permission. She keeps saying the book is great, and it will boost both of their careers.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While BoJack isn't nice about it, he is completely correct to call out Diane about all the details that she put in the book without clearing them with him. He says that he'll become a laughingstock if it goes into print. When Diane leaks the chapters in a fit of spite, the film crew starts mocking BoJack about his apple fritter binge, proving his point.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Thanks to Diane writing her book and then leaking it to BuzzFeed, BoJack fires her as his ghostwriter at the end of the episode.
  • Satellite Love Interest: Todd makes the suggestion that the love-interest in Mr. Peanutbutter's new movie should have more characteristics. The director Quentin Tarantulino takes him seriously.
  • Skewed Priorities: Mr. Peanutbutter is fixated on BoJack playing him wearing a crew neck t-shirt instead of a v-neck.
  • Slow Clap: Done by Quentin Tarantulino with all six of his arms after hearing Todd's idea.
  • Warts and All: BoJack tells Diane that the autobiography she's writing for him is supposed to be portraying him this way. Instead, the book portrays him as a deplorable person with no positive effects.
  • Who's on First?: Naomi Watts stays in character as Diane on set, the set being Diane's house, with Wallace Shawn playing BoJack while BoJack plays Mr. Peanutbutter and Quentin Tarantulino wants some peanut butter.
