Recap / Bob's Burgers S6E16 "Bye Bye Boo Boo"

Go To

Boyz 4 Now breaks up, and a now-solo Boo Boo holds a contest to ride a roller coaster with him. As Louise ropes a despondent Tina into helping her win it, Bob learns that the restaurant was the site of a mob hit years ago.

Bye Bye, Tropes:

  • Adults Are Useless: Krissy's parents are aware of her plan and let her go ahead with it.
  • Big Eater: Krissy and her Boo Crew pig out before riding the roller coaster, intending to have plenty of vomit for Boo Boo.
  • Bitch Slap: Boo Boo doesn't remember Louise until she smacks him again.
  • Blatant Lies: As if Jimmy's fake plaque wasn't already obvious, he claims the mob hit took place in "nineteen-eleventy-seven" and goes as far as to say it inspired Dick Tracy. Somehow, only Bob and the historian seem to notice.
  • Call-Back: Tina references the Boyz 4 Now concert she and Louise attended, and Louise's crush on him is a major plot point once more. The episode also references Louise slapping Boo Boo in the face when she does it again.
  • Continuity Nod: The historian mentions that the town was a bootlegger haven during Prohibition.
  • Description Cut: Louise says they need some "cold-blooded mercenaries" who "will do anything for the right price" to join their Boo Crew. Cut to Andy and Ollie Pesto fooling around at the water fountain.
  • Elmer Fudd Syndrome: Krissy speaks with this type of voice for some reason.
  • Entertainment Below Their Age: Krissy's dad is just as invested in the Boyz 4 Now drama as she and her friends are.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Robin ends up warning Tina and Louise about Krissy's plan because he was a fan of Boo Boo.
  • Fauxreigner: As if his real surname of Poplopovich (a name with clear Slavic origins) wasn't enough of an indication, a throwaway line from Jimmy Pesto has him outright state he isn't Italian.
  • Guilty Pleasures: In-universe, Louise is mortified that she's still obsessed with Boo Boo (especially since all the other Boyz 4 Now fans hate him for breaking up the band), and part of the plot is her getting over that shame.
  • Height Angst: Boo Boo's height insecurity follows him into solo stardom. His album is even titled "Tall Enough To Ride Your Heart".
  • Hope Spot: The Belchers seem to be collecting a lot of signatures, only to still lose to Krissy's group.
  • Literal Metaphor: Louise tells Krissy that if she barfs on Boo Boo, she barfs on herself—and part of that is because there's bound to be splashback.
  • Noodle Incident: Boo Boo, when referring to Allen and Griffin, simply states "You know what you did", hinting that something went down between the group members and that Boo Boo holds resentment towards those two. He doesn't mention Matt, though, suggesting their parting was more amicable.
  • "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer: When Tammy announces on school news that Boyz 4 Now has broken up, she adds one of these.
Tammy: I wish I was kidding; I am not kidding.
  • Oh, Crap!: Krissy and her crew after they back down from their plan but then can't hold the vomit back.
  • Pet the Dog: Krissy forgives Tina and lets her back in the Boo Crew in the end.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a reference to Bye Bye Birdie.
  • Precision F-Strike:
    • Tina's reaction to hearing that Boyz 4 Now have broken up.
      "Son of a BITCH!"
    • The historian point-blank calls Jimmy Pesto a douchebag.
  • The Scrappy: In-Universe; Boo Boo received the hate of most Boyz 4 Now fans since he was the one who caused the band's breakup.
  • Serious Business: The Boyz 4 Now fanclub takes the entire situation a trifle bit seriously.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Dominic "The Grunt" Gruntano (the bootlegger who got murdered in Bob's Burgers during Prohibition) seems to be a reference to Joe Masseria, a real life mobster known for being killed in a restaurant in the middle of a meal.
    • Jimmy is a fan of Johnny Dangerously.
  • Status Quo Is God: Averted; despite being a relatively well-established part of the series, Boyz 4 Now doesn't get back together at the end of the episode. It takes until Season 9 before they reconcile.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Louise doesn't have dreams about Boo Boo ever.
  • The Unintelligible: The emcee attempts to interview Krissy after her win, but she's so busy stuffing her face she can't give an intelligible response.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Krissy and her Boo Crew after Louise convinces them not to puke on Boo Boo.
