Recap / Bob's Burgers S 12 E 13 "Frigate Me Knot"

Go To

Linda encourages Teddy to attend a farewell ceremony for the ship on which he served in the Navy, but it means confronting his Navy pals.

Trope-gate Me Knot:

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Double-Dip" is (apparently) this to Teddy's Navy pals, because they were younger and nervous than the older Teddy, and seeing him screw up made them feel better with themselves and learned that anybody could be a great sailor. At the very least, they do come around when Teddy confronts them.
  • Born Unlucky: Teddy falling off the frigate and into the sea is one thing. Doing it twice in the same night is some legendarily poor luck.
  • Broken Aesop: Invoked in-universe for laughs. Misguidedly, Linda makes Teddy confront his Navy pals and learns that things weren't as bad as they were with them because they truly saw Teddy as a friend who helped them feel better at being young but nervous sailors. But when it comes to Linda trying to make up with her "friends" from the sleepover, she went a bit too far with Disproportionate Retribution and won't ever think about talking to them again (less so when she called them at 2am while pretending to be a serial killer for a year).
  • Calling Your Bathroom Breaks: As bad as pooping herself during a sleepover was, Linda's habit of talking out loud about what she's doing in the bathroom made it so much worse.
  • Chekhov's Skill: After struggling to tie a knot for most of the episode, Bob has to learn how to do it to rescue Tony after he falls off the frigate. Naturally, he finally learns in this critical moment.
  • Continuity Nod: Teddy's Navy service was previously mentioned in "The Helen Hunt" and "Some Kind of Fender Benderful."
  • Determinator: Bob is unable to tie a knot for much of the episode, but remains determined to tie it. While the instructor gets annoyed at first, he eventually admits he admires Bob's tenacity. It pays off at the end.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Linda reveals at the end of the episode that she got back at her "friends" mocking her Potty Failure by TP'ing Debbie Bernardini's house... and peeing on her bike... and calling Debbi and the others at 2am pretending to be a Serial Killer for a year. Bob's reaction ("Geez, Linda") indicates that he thinks this was a little overkill, and even Linda feels guilty about it.
Linda: Kids, do the Teddy thing, not the Mama thing.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Teddy became known as "Double-Dip" after falling into the sea twice in one night. Linda became "Death by Chocolate" after pooping her pants during a horror movie. Tony later gets the nickname "Slips Ahoy".
  • Identical Stranger: Bob apparently is the spitting image of Schmitty, a member of the Navy who didn't show up that day.
  • Inherently Funny Word: Gene keeps repeating the word "frigate", due to it sounding like a swear word.
  • Innocently Insensitive: It turns out that Teddy's fellow crewmates weren't trying to bully him with the nickname "Double-Dip", and are genuinely surprised to learn that Teddy didn't take it too well.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After teasing Teddy for falling into the ship, Tony falls off himself and gets saddled with his own Embarrassing Nickname to commemorate it.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: After seeing Teddy's hesitance to continue, Linda pushes him on, saying "Let's do this ship".
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: The rest of the Navy crew refuses to let Teddy live down the night he fell into the sea twice.
  • Pet the Dog: Since Teddy wasn't planning on actually attending the farewell ceremony, he didn't bother submitting a request for a souvenir from the ship ahead of time, causing him to be left without one. Linda doesn't think it's fair, especially since the crewmates who were bullying him are getting them, and she tries to talk the female crewman who's handing them out into giving him one regardless since the ship is about to be scuttled anyway, but she refuses. Linda then gets an idea to tear the deck bell off the wall and give that to Teddy, but they're found out and asked to return the bell. However, when Tony falls off the ship and Teddy does his best to organize people to rescue him, the female crewmember relents and lets him keep the bell, agreeing to pretend that Teddy submitted the souvenir request in time.
  • Potty Failure: Linda farted during a scary scene in a horror movie. Except it wasn't just a fart...
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Store Next Door is "I Wanna Specs You Up", a reference to the Color Me Badd song "I Wanna Sex You Up".
    • The Exterminator Van is "Catch Me If You Ant".
    • When Teddy reminisces about the humiliating incident on the frigate, he says that it was in the middle of the ocean in the middle of the night. Louise responds with "A lotta middles, Malcolm".
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Louise shows interest in the frigate's weaponry, primarily their torpedos. Turns out the frigate was disarmed months ago, because it's way too dangerous to keep stuff like that on a ship they're about to scuttle (i.e. intentionally sink into the water, sometimes done with explosives).
  • With Friends Like These...:
    • Linda opens her own embarrassing story by noting that the friends in her story weren't really her friends, as she found out the hard way.
    • After all the teasing Teddy received for falling off the frigate twice, he's genuinely confused when he learns his crewmates considered him their friend.
