Recap / Bobs Burgers S 11 E 20 Steal Magazineolias

Go To

The Belcher kids get caught up in a game of cat-and-mouse when Dr. Yap comes to the restaurant in search of something that was taken from the waiting room of his office; Bob, Linda and Teddy try to clean a huge bird poop off the restaurant's window.

Steal Trope-nolias:

  • Always Second Best: Gene's motive for stealing the magazine is that he's never beaten Louise when they play a game, so he wanted a memento from the one time he did.
  • Analogy Backfire: Dr. Yap compares people stealing the magazines from his waiting room office to him taking the napkins from the restaurant. Tina then points out that the napkins are there for the restaurant's customers to take.
Gene: [Hands a handful of napkins to Dr. Yap] Here, I insist.
    Dr. Yap: Okay, bad example.
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: Professor Foxtail wears a full outfit except for shoes.
  • Bird-Poop Gag: The B-plot is about Bob trying to clean a large bird dropping on his window and just making it worse.
  • Bottle Episode: In a similar vein to "Some Kind of Fender Benderful", the great majority of the episode takes place in either the restaurant or the front of the restaurant.
  • Continuity Nod: Dr. Yap knows where the Belchers live because he's been to the restaurant in "Glued, Where's My Bob?".
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Tina, normally the voice of reason, is too enamored with Professor Foxtail to properly chastise Gene for stealing the magazine.
  • Explosive Breeder: Discussed; Yap notes that the rabbit's cage at another dentist's office is better suited for a fertility clinic, but Linda cuts him off before he can explain to Gene why.
  • Hope Spot: Louise manages to convince Yap that he just left the magazine in his car... until it's revealed that Gene didn't just steal it, he ripped out the "Fun & Games" page.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: Professor Foxtail wears one.
  • "Mission: Impossible" Cable Drop: Linda suggests that they lower her off the roof in this manner to get rid of the bird poop.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Despite being called Professor Foxtail, he doesn't seem to possess one.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, Gene isn't the first to steal one of Yap's magazines.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Dr. Yap ultimately realizes that Gene's desire to keep a memento of his one victory is quite similar to his own insecurities about not being able to measure up to other dentists. Partially for this reason and partially for others, he lets Gene keep the magazine.
  • Oh, Crap!: Louise's brain breaks when she realizes that Gene defeated her in Dots and Boxes.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Louise would love to forget losing to Gene in Dots and Boxes. Gene, naturally, is all about gloating about it (albeit in an Innocently Insensitive way).
  • Perverse Sexual Lust: Tina falls in love with Professor Foxtail, a Funny Animal scientist from the magazine.
  • Pet the Dog: Once Gene reveals that the reason he stole the magazine is because he never wins any of the family games and activities, this time he managed to pull it off with the magazine's activity page game against Louise and that he wanted a memento of the moment, Dr. Yap calms down and relates with him about their respective insecurities, giving the magazine back to Gene, although mostly because by that point it's sweaty and wet from being hidden in Gene's pants and has the activity page torn off also thanks to him and he was only giving it back for Gene to throw away since he only wants to keep the activity page anyway. Tina's still happy to take it off their hands regardless so she can keep daydreaming after Professor Foxtail.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a shoutout to Steel Magnolias (which Gene references fairly often throughout the series).
  • Pyrrhic Victory: The kids get their later bedtime, but by night they're so tired that they can't properly enjoy it.
  • Serious Business: Dr. Yap really hates it when patients steal his magazines. He even subscribes as "Dr. Don't Take This Magazine" so the message is clear. When the kids sarcastically ask if he's contacted the authorities, his response is "Not yet", and he reveals his intent to come back with a search warrant to check all of Bob's Burgers.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Resulting from Tina's crush on Professor Foxtail.
Dr. Yap: Please don't stroke the magazines.
Tina: Yup, yup, I didn't kiss it either when no one was looking.
  • Talk About That Thing: When Yap asks for a drink of water, Gene offers to get it. Linda says she's already getting it from the water cooler, but Gene insists on getting "fresh" water from the kitchen faucet and asks his sisters to help him (despite Louise commenting that it seems like a "one-Gene job"). Turns out he just wanted to tell Tina and Louise that he stole the magazine.
  • This Is My Chair: Teddy comes in before the restaurant is even officially open because he wants to ensure nobody takes his seat (and because he likes watching prep).
  • Water Hose Rodeo: The first time Teddy turns on the pressure cleaner, he loses control of the hose. He takes off his gloves and goggles, thinking they get in the way, but it happens again. He finally gets the handle of it, though.
