Recap / Big Mouth S 04 E 4 Cafeteria Girls

Go To

After seeing their eighth grade classmates coupled up, Nick and Andrew make a play for two seventh grade girls. Jessi adjusts to life in the city.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Ass Shove: Maury shoves his Idea Bulb up his own ass.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: After Lola reveals that the "funny thing" she did was give a kid brain damage, it sounds like Jay is horrified... before he say that he finds it as hilarious as she does.
  • The Bus Came Back: Depression Kitty shows up once again as Jessi spirals under the influence of the Anxiety Mosquito. Apparently Tito and she are old colleagues.
  • Country Matters: Lola calls the Starbucks barista this when he gets her order wrong.
  • Furry Reminder: When Connie surfs into the coffee shop, she drenches Depression Kitty, who hates water, much like real cats.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Misha is in the seventh grade and is very sexually aggressive.
  • Hostile Show Takeover: Nick and Andrew behave like they're the center of the universe because they believe they are still on Big Mouth, but suddenly they're on the show Cafeteria Girls, a sitcom starring Izzy and Misha. It has a Studio Audience, which suddenly appear as Nick's living room becomes a stage set, a Fuck Gremlin instead of a Hormone Monster, and Coach Steve plays their Lunchlady Eve.
  • Idea Bulb: Maury has one right before giving Andrew the idea to date seventh grade girls.
  • It's All About Me: When Nick and Andrew decide to switch girlfriends without Izzy and Misha's knowledge, they say they can do this because they are the stars of the show. But Misha and Izzy point out they are actually on their show, Cafeteria Girls. This leads Nick and Andrew to realize they should stop acting like they're the center of the universe.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: The sign outside the school says: "First Day of School, Fourth Episode?" at the beginning of the episode.
  • Not Allowed to Grow Up: Averted now that the gang is in the eighth grade.
  • Self-Referential Humor: Nick, Andrew, and Maury criticize Cafeteria Girls, while unknowingly commenting on their own series. It's also somewhat of a commentary on the similarities between Big Mouth and PEN15.
  • Shout-Out: The new principal is someone wearing a yellow gopher costume with their voice altered, much like The Masked Singer.
    • Among the riders of the "Dummy Truck" are Gritty, the Philadelphia Flyers mascot, and Odie from Garfield.
  • Special Guest: Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine from PEN15 appear as Izzy and Misha.
  • Take That!: Nick and Andrew take a swipe at Bart Simpson for being in the fourth grade for nearly thirty years as well as having his hair look like his skin. (It should be noted that both Nick Kroll and John Mulaney were guest stars on The Simpsons at one point.)
  • Truth in Television: Depression Kitty and Anxiety Mosquito are old work colleagues. Anxiety and Depression are highly correlated in real life.
  • Verbal Tic: Izzy sometimes sings her words.
