Recap / Big Mouth S 02 E 10 The Department Of Puberty

Go To

Nick, Andrew and Jessi enter the realm of Human Resources to sort out their personal problems.

Tropes:

  • Ass Shove: This is one of the ways Gavin torments Tyler.
[Tyler shows Nick that there's a cigarette in his asshole]
Nick: Is that a lit cigarette in your butt?
Tyler: He calls it his ass-tray.
  • Bait-and-Switch: It seems like Gavin is going to appear in Nick's room in the end, when it's actually Connie.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Coach Steve is fired from the school over what happened in the previous episode and Tyler and Connie are cut off from their kids; on the other hand, Andrew is able to befriend the Shame Wizard, Connie is assigned to Nick (whom she manages to work well with), Jessi has overcome her depression and Jay is now in touch with his bisexuality.
  • Brick Joke: When Andrew says he doesn't want to look the same for the rest of his life, Nick asks: "Like the assistant manager of a bowling alley?" Andrew's file on Maury's computer says that his projected profession is manager of a bowling alley.
  • The Bus Came Back: When Connie is resigned to losing Jessi, Rick returns to remind her of the oath to guide teens through puberty, giving her the motivation to get back Jessi.
  • Call-Back:
    • Shannon's says that Jessi should talk to a therapist because she ran away, shoplifted, and did drugs.
    • The Shame Wizard's office has a glass case filled with Nazi dildos and a framed picture of Coach Steve's drawing of them being friends.
  • Celestial Bureaucracy: It turns out that the Hormone Monsters work for "Human Resources — We Manage People" (presented by Acura), which manages all stages of human life. There is a Department of Puberty, Center for Adulthood, Geriatrics, and Bureau of the Dead. Nick, Andrew and Jessi find their way here when Tyler accidentally leaves a portal open.
    • There's also an RV between Geriatrics and the Bureau of the Dead which has a banner over it that says "People Who are 62".
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Principal Baron fires Steve for not being present when the kids ransacked the gym, she and the detectives spend over an hour explaining things to him… and he still doesn't get the full picture.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Connie telling Nick she's going to "make him a man" sounds similar to a cougar/boytoy relationship.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: One of the other notifications under the one that says Jessi Glazer's Evaluation says "Blue Waffle: Real or Fake?"
  • Given Name Reveal:
    • Last name in this case. Maury's nameplate reads: Maurice Beverley - Senior Administrator: Hormone Division.
    • Rick reveals that Connie's is Constance.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Nick wants Gavin as his hormone monster based on the fact that he's macho and confident. However, when he gets the meeting with him, he finds out that Gavin is nothing more than a bully who physically abuses Tyler.
  • Sidetracked by the Analogy: When the Shame Wizard tries to explain to Andrew that he's just been trying to keep him from becoming 'one of those men who waits six months for a customized sex doll', Andrew is more shocked about the whole 'six months' thing.
Shame Wizard: Yeah, well they have to get the eyes right- Th-th-that's not the point!
  • Stalker without a Crush: To Nick's displeasure, Tyler reveals that he took a picture of Nick sleeping.
