Pen Pals

Through a series of letters, Tilly and Andromeda tell each other about their respective outlooks and worry they've lost what they have in common.

"Pen Pals" contains examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Tilly and Andromeda.
  • All for Nothing: In her first letter, Tilly writes about how she stopped Bill from cutting down dandelions on the front yard. In the postscript, however, she mentions casually that the dandelions were killed by frost.
  • Alone in a Crowd: Andromeda confesses in her letter that without Tilly around, the city feels empty to her.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Andromeda engages in "extreme foraging", in which she hops on top of people to get an apple on a tree in the sidewalk. We see a man wearing a trampoline for a hat, as his girlfriend asks why he would wear one. Andromeda then enters the frame... but lands on the woman instead.
  • Berserk Button: After Kiki, Weezie, and Benny tell Andromeda about their opinion on Goat Girl, Andromeda loses her cool and tells them that they're banned from the museum for life.
  • Big "NO!": Tilly screams one when she sees Bill about to chop the dandelions.
  • Book Ends: At the beginning of the episode, Tilly sits down at her desk and clicks her pen open in close-up as she prepares to write her first letter to Andromeda. At the end of the episode following the Distant Duet, Tilly sits under the oak tree the same way, and the camera shows her clicking her pen open the same way.
  • Distant Duet: The episode closes on one between Tilly and Andromeda proclaiming their long-distance friendship.
  • The Faceless: Andromeda's mother makes her debut here, but her face is not shown and is only seen from behind out the apartment window.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The envelope to the letter Andromeda receives reveals the country house's address as "1886 Lowell Road", while the apartment building Andromeda lives in is on "4544 East 3rd Street", and her suite is "Apartment F".
  • Le Parkour: Andromeda's "extreme foraging" consists of her jumping over things and people to catch an apple high up on a tree.
  • Uncertified Expert: In her first letter, Andromeda claims to have gotten a job at the Museum of Cryptozoology, and she's seen serving as a guide wearing a sash that reads "expert". But then the manager yells at her because she actually wasn't hired and just volunteered herself, and eventually kicks her out for harassing the customers.
  • Voiceover Letter: Each time a letter is dictated, it is narrated by either Tilly or Andromeda in voiceover depending on who is writing it.

Study Abroad

When Remy is expecting a call from his parents about what he learned in the country for the week but he didn't learn anything, he enlists the Greens to help him lie and create a lesson for him, but Bill prefers if he tells the truth.

"Study Abroad" contains examples of:

  • A Bloody Mess: As Gramma acts out a story about fighting a snake, she grabs a jar of jam and starts flinging it around to illustrate all the blood spraying from the attack.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Although Remy's parents forgive him for his forged story and let him continue his extended stay in Smalton, he is not left off the hook and has to write a 20-page report on the history of lying.
  • Bottle Episode: Most of the episode takes place inside the country house, with a brief scene in the fields at the beginning and occasional shifts to the imaginary scenarios.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Bill starts telling Remy a story about when he was building a fence and lied about doing it properly, but before he could get to the point, Remy decides to make up a story about him building a fence.
  • Fainting: Vasquez faints when Remy lies about there being wolves at the farm.
  • "Fawlty Towers" Plot: Remy didn't learn anything that week to tell his parents, so with the Greens' help, he makes up a story about him learning to build a fence. But as the Remingtons keep asking him questions that throw Remy off, the Greens try to help from the sidelines, but Remy keeps misinterpreting the clues, until he comes up with a story about defending the farm from a giant wolf. This freaks out the Remingtons so much they consider bringing him back home before Remy confesses that he made it all up.
  • Freak Out: Remy completely loses it upon hearing it's Sunday, meaning he has to tell his parents something he learned that week and he didn't learn anything.
  • The Hilarity of Hats: All of Nancy's suggestions for lies involve animals wearing hats, which she finds hilarious.
  • Honesty Aesop: It takes him a while, but Remy learns that lying isn't worth the trouble after his lie about fighting a wolf almost results in his parents taking him away from the Greens.
  • Only Sane Man: Bill was the only one who objected to Remy lying to his parents about what he learned when he didn't learn anything, and kept suggesting it would be best to just tell them the truth. Turns out, his advice was what set him free in the end.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": The first sign of Remy's Freak Out upon realizing it's Sunday and the day his parents call him has him shout "No!" over and over as he smears cheese on the fridge door.
  • Real Time: Near the beginning of the episode, Remy tells Cricket his parents will be calling him in four minutes. Exactly four minutes later, he receives said incoming call, which takes up the second half of the episode.
  • Reflective Eyes: The full moon is reflected in the eyes of Miss Debbie Junior during Remy's story.
  • Wacky Wayside Tribe: Tilly's contribution to Remy's story begins with her talking about a duck raised by coyotes. When Remy points out that he's not being mentioned, Tilly says that she's establishing the setting.
