Go To

  • Big Damn Heroes: Fire appears to blast the Gentleman Ghost after Batman gets knocked into the open grave.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The Teaser sets up one of the episode's main conflicts (Batman's disappointment in Plastic Man's behavior). Following episodes largely employed a more strict Batman Cold Open approach that had no connections to the main story, even if the same guest hero appeared in both.
  • Everyone Has Standards: After Batman says he trusts him, Plastic Man feels guilty about swiping a diamond and returns it.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Played with. Plastic Man, a former henchman of Kiteman, figures Batman only took him under his wing as an ally because he felt sorry for causing the accident that gave him his powers. But ultimately, Plastic Man knows better than anyone that Batman went above and beyond to save his life because he's just that much of a hero.
  • Foreshadowing: The Gentleman Ghost knocks Batman into an open grave with the intent to kill him. Though it seems like standard villainy here, "Trials of the Demon!" will reveal that the Gentleman Ghost has a very personal reason for wanting to kill Batman.
  • Greed: Plastic Man's overriding problem throughout the episode. He just can't help but pilfer the money that Gentleman Ghost stole.
  • "Hey, You!" Haymaker: Batman taps the Gentleman Ghost on the shoulder before showing off his Nth Metal knuckles or a spare diamond that Grodd obtained.
  • Once More, with Clarity: When we first flashback to Plastic Man's origins as one of Kiteman's henchmen, it's played up as his tragic backstory of how Batman "ruined" his life when he caused the accident that gave him his powers. But when Batman is later captured, he recalls that there was more to the flashback: when the soon-to-be Plastic Man was drowning in the chemicals that mutated him, who should pull him out of the chemical vat than Batman himself. Furthermore, not only did Batman visit Plastic Man in the hospital when he was recuperating from his mutation, but in turn, Plastic Man helped testify against Kiteman to repay the favor.
  • Recurring Extra: Grodd would later go on to make a handful of other appearances after this episode.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Depends on who you ask.
Plastic Man: Are you seein' what I'm seein'? 'Cause I'm seeing gorillas riding pterodactyls with harpoon guns stealing a boat.
    Batman: [unfazed] It's Gorilla Grodd.
Plastic Man: It's messed up is what it is!
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Batman berates Plastic Man for trying to take stolen money for himself.
  • What You Are in the Dark: For both Batman and Plastic Man. After dealing with Grodd, Plastic Man offers that Batman can count the jewelry to make sure it's all there. In a moment of friendship, Batman wholeheartedly tells his friend "I trust you". As it turns out, Plastic Man didn't give all the jewelry back. But not only does this show how must Batman trusts Plastic Man: the latter also gets his moment when he decides to give back the remaining jewelry of his own accord.
  • Worthy Opponent: Grodd admits that Batman is the one human worthy of his intelligence.
