Recap / Batman: The Brave and the Bold S1 E12 "Deep Cover for Batman!"

Go To

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Silver Cyclone has no intention of letting organics live and plans to use a weapon of mass destruction to destroy them all.
  • All There in the Manual: Dyna-Mite's name is only given in the credits, going unnamed in the episode itself.
  • Alternate Reality Episode: Batman goes undercover to stop an evil version of superheroes from another universe.
  • Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better: Owlman is able to anticipate Batman's every move during their hand to hand combat fight, including escaping by way of Batarang.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • The opening scene plays out as a standard teaser with Batman and co fighting a C-List villain from the comics. It’s after the Red Hood leaves that we learn that they were the Mirror Universe counterparts.
    • Scarlet Scarab initially objects to the idea of using the planet destroying bomb... because after doing that, what else will they do?
    • Batman overhears Scarlet Scarab talking about that he has the heart of hero. That's because he has an actual heart.
  • Batman Gambit: During their fight, Batman short-circuits the lights. He fully expects a guy named Owlman to have night vision goggles, waiting for the right moment to create a burst of light that temporarily blind him.
  • Bond One-Liner: "Who's broken now, Cyclone?"
  • Emerging from the Shadows: Done in The Teaser to reveal it was Owlman and friends fighting the Red Hood.
  • Expy: Silver Cyclone can be considered the show's version of Marvel's Ultron, as both are silver-schemed robots with red eyes and a genocidal hatred towards all life on Earth. They even have Good Counterparts who are both red robots with a love for humanity.
  • Fantastic Racism: Silver Cyclone hates all of humanity and looks forward to ruling an empty world.
  • Foreshadowing: Red Hood expresses hope that his counterpart can somehow repay Batman for all his help. Batman is dubious, but the next part of the story sees him teaming up with the Joker.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The “main” Earth actually gets labelled “Earth-23” by the phase oscillator.
  • Insult Backfire: Silver Cyclone is unfazed when Blue Bowman yells at him for his betrayal.
    Blue Bowman: You backstabbing...
    Silver Cyclone: Robot?
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Scarlet Scarab objects to destroying Batman's world with Cyclone's bomb...because after that what other crime could top it?
  • Literal Metaphor: Scarlet Scarab has the heart of a hero... as in, he has the heart of a hero he killed in a jar.
  • Mirror Universe: Where the Injustice Syndicate (including such evil counterparts as Owlman, Blue Bowman, Silver Cyclone, and Scarlet Scarab) runs wild and has captured heroic versions of Batman's enemies.
  • No Name Given: The civilian identities of the Syndicate aren't given (if they're anything like their comics counterpart, then it's not a guarantee they're the same as their good counterparts).
  • Properly Paranoid: Blue Bowman is aware that "Owlman" is acting unusual and has him watched.
  • Sanity Slippage: Subverted. Red Hood pulls the will to not fall into the same pit his counterpart went to.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Red Hood dumps the planet destroying bomb on Earth 161, which he states is full of zombies. 161 is an inversion of 616, with Earth-616 being the designation for the Marvel comics universe, and "Marvel Zombies" is a (usually) friendly nickname DC's given to its competition's readers.
    • Dyna-Mite introduces himself with a riff on the famous "Senator, you're no Kennedy" quote.
  • Spotting the Thread: As Silver Cyclone tortures Red Hood, Batman gets in contact with him, asking him to provide directions through the Syndicate's headquarters. However, after a few sentences, Cyclone notices his statements include an amount of directions, and realizes something's up.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The Injustice Syndicate to a tee. Only Dyna-Mite has anything pleasant to say about a teammate (calling Owlman a friend).
  • To Be Continued: Batman returns to his home Earth and finds himself a wanted man.
  • Wham Shot: For those who aren't aware of the Red Hood in the comics, the shadowy reveal of his face and flashback to his origin reveals that he's actually the Good Counterpart of the Joker.
  • Who Are You?: After "Owlman" is presumably blown up, a shadow suddenly appears over the villains.
Blue Bowman: Who is this guy?!
[Batman effortless knocks out Blue Bowman, Scarlet Scarab, and Dyna-Mite]
    Batman: I'm Batman!
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Silver Cyclone pulls this on Blue Bowman, Dyna-Mite, Fire's evil counterpart, Plastic Man's evil counterpart, Aquaman's evil counterpart, and Scarlet Scarab by locking them in holding cells with no intention of releasing them from said holding cells. Blue Bowman is angry at Silver Cyclone's betrayal before Silver Cyclone continues to ramble on about his plan to set off the bomb before a red ace is thrown at his head by Red Hood, causing his head to blow up.
