Tropes:

  • Alien Invasion: Andrias is finally ready to invade Earth and is believed by the Resistance to invade in a few days. The Mother of Olms arrives to inform them that this is wrong, as the olms can feel his armies mobilizing to leave presently.
  • The Alliance: The frogs, toads and newts plan to join forces against Andrias.
  • Chirping Crickets: When Anne tells the troops that they will join the toads and the newts, their reaction is an awkward silence.
  • Cry into Chest: Anne cries after giving her "Reason You Suck" Speech to the tribes and buries her head into Sasha's shoulder, to which Sasha wraps her arms around Anne as comfort.
  • Dramatic Irony: If Anne and Sasha knew what had become of Marcy, they'd know (as the audience can likely guess) that a plan resembling part of her favourite film is doomed to failure. Sadly, they don't.
  • False Teeth Tomfoolery: When the toad and newt armies arrive, Polly requests they leave their weapons outside the meeting room. A toad soldier reveals his golden fangs are actually dentures, which he removes and gives to Polly. The moment he leaves, Polly pops them into her own mouth and runs off to cause chaos while laughing evilly.
  • Fantastic Racism: The frogs, toads and newts all despise each other, which leads to much of the episode's conflict as they can't work together against Andrias before declaring civil war against each other. Anne and Sasha try to bring them together, but Anne declares them incapable of working together to take back their world. It's this that leads the races to temporarily put aside their differences in interest of a common goal.
  • Foreshadowing: When Anne and Sasha comment that the tribe leaders' plan sounds like what they saw in the movie War of the Warlocks, they mention that it was Marcy's favorite film. This will end up coming back to bite the alliance big time.
  • Ignored Expert: Hop Pop actually comes up with a potential plan early on, but no one listens to him because he's a frog.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Anne breaks down sobbing after her plan to unite the frogs, toads and newts has failed.
Anne: (sobbing) I'm s-s-s-sorry, Sash. I thought I could help, but...but... (proceeds to cry onto Sasha's shoulder)
  • Jerkass Realization: After Anne's "The Reason You Suck" Speech, the frogs, toads and newts are visibly ashamed of themselves.
  • Lock-and-Load Montage: At the end of the episode, after the Mother of Olms informs the Resistance that Andrias' forces are mobilizing at that moment, all the frogs, toads, and newts suit up for battle, demonstrating their newfound cooperation.
  • Ocular Gushers: Downplayed. After Anne lays into the tribes for their fighting, she lets out cascading sheets of tears.
  • Rage Breaking Point: When all of her trust-building exercises end in disaster and Polly starts gleefully handing out weapons, Anne stops the three armies from attacking each other by going into her Super Mode, leaping into their midst, and knocking them back with a Planar Shockwave. She then delivers a "Reason You Suck" Speech augmented by Power Echoes and storms off telling them to sort things out on their own.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Anne gives one to the leaders of the three tribes over their refusal to work together, saying that if they don't come together, they'll never be able to save Amphibia.
  • Reconcile the Bitter Foes: The driving conflict is Anne trying to overcome centuries of racism and discrimination between the three Amphibian races.
  • Rousing Speech: Sasha and Anne give their troops one to prepare them for the upcoming battle.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When Anne tries to cheer up Sasha by telling her about her previous skill at "brokering peace between feuding factions", Sasha gets confused and references the "Math Lady" meme.
    • To The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings:
      • More than in any other episode, Elves Versus Dwarves is in full swing between the svelte Newts and the brutish Toads, much like the recurring animosity between Tolkien's Elves and Dwarves. Even the Frogs could be seen as a stand-in for Men and/or Hobbits — looked down upon by all, yet frequently underestimated.
      • The episode's name is not far removed from The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, wherein the Dwarf and Elf armies also had a hard time cooperating (despite officially being allies).
      • The plan to distract with a frontal attack while a small group sneaks in to achieve the critical objective is exactly what Aragorn (frontal attack) and Frodo (small group) did.
  • Take a Third Option: During the initial brainstorming session, Beatrix suggests an all-out assault on Andrias' castle, while Tritonio suggests a Wounded Gazelle Gambit to distract the guards while a strike team sneaks in and steals the Calamity Box. Hop Pop's idea turns out to be a combination of the two, with the all-out assault serving as the distraction for the strike team.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Due to centuries of Fantastic Racism and Caste System, Hop Pop, Beatrix, and Tritonio, the heads of the three tribes, find it difficult to cooperate with each other. In the end, they decide that while that can't fully undo the past, they can put aside their differences so that they'll have a better future.
  • Title-Only Opening: The eighth episode to not play the theme song, possibly to build up to the intensity of the Grand Finale.
  • Trust-Building Blunder: Anne puts the frogs, newts, and toads through a series of trust-building exercises. It does not go well.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Anne and Sasha try their very best to make sure that the frogs, toads and newts get along but to their frustration, they keep clashing and starting fights.
  • Wham Line: At the end of the episode, the Mother of Olms tells the alliance that the intel they gained was incorrect; Andrias's forces won't move out in a few days.
Mother of Olms: He plans to invade Earth tonight.
