Recap / American Dad! S8E1 "Hot Water"

Go To

In this musical episode, Stan buys a hot tub, which turns out to be bloodthirsty.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: Despite being a Series Fauxnale; the episode ends before the final fate of Francine can be revealed. What happened to the rest of the Smiths also remains uncertain, being last seen at Mah Mah and Bah Bah's house, thus not revealing if the Hot Tub got to them or not down the line.
  • Crashing Dreams: While Stan and Francine are having an elaborate fantasy about everything the hot tub gives them, Steve suddenly appears singing "Hey, hey, hey. Hey, hey, heeeeey. Heeeeeeey..." It's then shown that Steve is shouting at them, trying to get his parents' attention, because they didn't pick him or Roger up from school and soccer practice, respectively.
  • Downer Ending: Stan fails to save Francine and succumbs to his injuries.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Hot Tub is very possessive of Stan, constantly trying to get him to forget about all of his obligations, like his job or his family, and continue partying. When Stan finally decides to reconcile with his family and make up for his behavior, Hot Tub snaps and lures Francine to the house so he can kill her. This isn't the first time he's done this either.
  • Hope Spot: Stan finds a bottle that is supposed to calm down an evil hot tub, but he expires before he can use it.
  • If I Can't Have You…: When Stan rejects him after his attemtped murder of Francine Hot Tub decides to just kill them both.
  • Insane Troll Logic: As Stan points out to Hot Tub in their final confrontation it's pretty crazy of Hot Tub to expect his owner to completely abandon his family in favor of a hot tub, no matter how cool that hot tub might be.
  • Invincible Villain: No one even comes close to harming Hot Tub in any way the entire episode. This eventually results in The Bad Guy Wins.
  • Karma Houdini: Hot tub gets away with killing several characters in the show, including Stan himself without suffering any repercussions, as a result of Stan succumbing to his injuries before being able to do anything else.
  • Lightning Can Do Anything: Hot Tub and other devices like him were banned from the market, because the stripper poles installed in them tended to attract lightning that made them come to life.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: To paraphrase Steve; "I'd like to use the hot tub too, but I can't because I'm pretty sure my parents fucked in it last night!"
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Hot Tub did this to his former owner's family when said owner became too busy caring for them to spend time with Hot Tub anymore. He tries to pull the same thing with Francine after Stan chooses her over him. Whether he succeeds is left up in the air.
  • Series Fauxnale: The episode was originally produced as a series finale, which is why Stan dies at the end, but then the show was renewed.
  • Urine Trouble: The flashback to the hot tub being neglected by Joe Nakash shows him getting peed on by a dog.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The episode is Little Shop of Horrors with hip-hop music and an evil hot tub.

Cee Lo Green: Well, there you have it. That's our story. Stan's dead. Good night!
