Go To

S3, P1 - Ep 2: A Late Start To A Wacky World - Part 2

Luz takes on a new name for her new life in the Boiling Isles. While exploring this new world, she comes across someone who suffered from All For One and is followed by another witch.

This chapter contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Belos's sludge monster form was no joke in the show, but in the story it grants him enough physical power to go toe-to-toe with All For One.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed. All For One claims he locked up his brother not out of cruelty, but to in a misguided attempt to protect him from the outside elements, due to his poor immune system. He was genuinely distraught when the résistance busted him because he died not long afterwards, due to exposure to the elements and lack of blood clotting. He flat out admits to himself that he didn’t care about the power that claiming One For All would give him, only that it was his brother's Quirk.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In the manga, All For One was a Big Brother Bully who killed his own brother a case of If I Can't Have You… no one can. Here Yoichi died of natural causes and All For One had a Big Brother Instinct, albeit a possessive one.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: Unlike the show where they never interacted, Gilbert is friends with Eda who helped him cope with his husband's murder.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Lilith's fight against All For One cost the witch her right arm.
  • Atop a Mountain of Corpses: Eda recalls the time during the war where All For One stood on the bodies of her fellow witches that was on fire.
  • Big Damn Heroes: After seeing Toshiko impale Gilbert, she was seconds away from pulling this until she saw the girl heal him. She acknowledges that she's not a monster like her predecessor she fought over a decade ago.
  • Blinded by Rage: Gilbert becomes this when he lays eyes on Toshiko, as she reminds him of the man who murdered his husband and tries to attack her.
  • Break the Cutie: As Rikitatsu praises his apprentice, he stops as he notices the girl Trying Not to Cry. This genuinely catches the man off guard and flat out asks her if she's okay... only for her to hug the person she recognises as a monster and break down into tears. She's so thoroughly broken and traumatised by her experience as a superhuman she's willing to seek comfort from All For One, of all people.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Averted. Toshiko asks All For One if killed Harvey, one of Willow's dad's, 14 years ago, he confirmed he did as he was one of the few witches that managed to wound him, albeit lightly.
  • Crusading Widower: Gilbert tries to do this on Toshiko, as All For One murdered his husband and she looked like him. Key word being "try" here.
  • Daddy's Girl: Willow loves her father very much being glad that he survived his encounter with Toshiko.
  • Death by Adaptation: Harvey was killed in the war not long after Willow was born.
  • Death Seeker: Eda recalls how a broken Gilbert was with the loss of Harvey in the war going as far as to go to her so she could end his life, but she refused knowing Harvey wouldn’t have wanted that and would've left poor Willow an orphan, as she wouldn't be able to care for her properly.
  • Enemy Mine: Things got so desperate in the Ten-Year War with All For One that Belos had to pull this with Eda the Owl Lady to drive off the supervillain. As thanks, he pardoned her for her crimes.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite seeing him as weak and pathetic, All For One he loved Yoichi in his own way and looked after him the best he could. He was genuinely upset and angry when he died.
Such a weak, frail, and pathetic man. Yet, a man who he loved as a brother with all of his blackened heart. It was why he hunted after One For All. To reclaim what was his. His brother.
  • Evil Makes You Monstrous: Belos's "Day Breaker" form is described by Eda to be just as ugly and disgusting as he was as a person.
  • Eye Scream:
    • Gilbert gets stabbed in the eye by Toshiko. Luckily, she heals him.
    • Lilith also lost her right eye to All For One in the 10-year war.
  • Good Parents: Willow had a loving relationship with Gilbert growing up, comforting her when she's upset.
  • Healing Hands: After her "Quirk Awakening", Luz can heal other people’s injuries via touch with "Super Regeneration".
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Downplayed. For her contributions in the war effort, Eda is a recognised war hero, despite her covenless status and Emperor Belos pardoned her for crimes as a thank you (most likely done out of Pragmatic Villainy), now she is (mostly) left alone by the authorities, as gratitude. She's still seen as adangerous individual that most would avoid.
  • Homeless Hero: Luz has become this due to the destruction of Gravesfield and hasn't had a decent night's sleep in the past 3 days, having slept in alleyways and caves.
  • Impaled Palm: One of the areas Gilbert gets stabbed is right through the fist he was going to strike Toshiko with by her Absurdly Sharp Claws.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Toshiko responses to his attack by giving him a does of this with her Spear Fingers faster than the witch father could react.
  • It's All My Fault: Eda feels immense guilt about unintentionally leading All For One to her homeland where he started a 10-year long war that resulted many deaths.
  • I Warned You: Toshiko warned Gilbert Park that trying to fight her was a bad idea as he got Impaled with Extreme Prejudice for his troubles.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Eda views Toshiko as this.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: Eda sees Emperor Belos as this compared to All For One.
  • The Lost Lenore: Harvey is this to Gilbert.
  • Meaningful Name: Belos's Daybreaker form is a clear reference to the Day of Unity he has planned.
  • Meaningful Rename: Luz Noceda takes up the name Toshiko Shigaraki on All For One's suggestion, meaning "Clever Child of Death" due to the latter seeing her as a Child Prodigy with his Quirk and has racked up a rather large body count. The surname is also All For One's as he's the only "family" she has left now.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Belos's sludge monster form, despite his frail-looking appearance in that form, he was incredibly strong to the point of shattering one of the ribs of The Titan with his fist alone trying to hit
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Gilbert comes to his senses, he acknowledges that shouldn’t have tried to attack Toshiko, feeling remorse.
  • Named by Adaptation: The second One For All user is given the last name Bakugou and the third is given the full name Atsushi Kinokage.
  • Never My Fault: When Luz tries to blame the vestige of All For One for ruining her life he brushes it off using logic to deflect fault onto the other enemies she had to face.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The two future One For All successors of the résistance broke Yoichi out of All For One's captivity but he didn't live long afterwards, because of compromised immune system causing his body to be unable to clot blood, which was why the villain kept him there in the first place.
  • Obsolete Mentor: Downplayed. All For One claims that now Luz has awaken their Quirk, from this point forward, he only knows the basics about it. However, he's still helpful in the lore of the Boiling Isles.
  • Orphanage of Fear: Eda notes that this is a thing in the Boiling Isles.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • When Luz suddenly hugs the villain and starts bawling in his chest after everything that's happened to her in the Battle of Gravesfield, Rikitatsu is left confused until this scenario reminds him of when his late brother Yoichi, the one person who cared about other than himself, did this when they were kids. Instead of using the situation to his advantage for manipulation, the supervillain makes a genuine effort to comfort the crying child.
Rikitatsu: It’s… going to be alright, Noceda.
    • Rather than let him die for trying to attack her, she uses her new Healing Hands aspect of her Quirk to save Willow's dad as she doesn't want the girl to be fatherless.
Toshiko: I’m not a monster. I would never take away a father from their daughter.
  • Posthumous Character: Unlike the show, Harvey is long dead before the start of the story, thanks to All For One during the war.
  • Secret Identity: Luz changing her name was partly because the Wittebanes are residing here in Boiling Isles will likely turn the populous against her. The war between them is far from over.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Sometimes when Luz looks at her hands she sees a hallucination of blood coating it and dripping to the ground. A reminder of the blood that stained her hands, the pain and death she brought all those months ago at the death camp.
  • So Proud of You: Rikitatsu praises Luz for achieving Quirk Awakening, something he couldn't do in his entire life, telling her he's genuinely proud of her and that the Quirk is truly her's now.
  • Starting a New Life: Toshiko is hoping for a fresh start in the Boiling Isles as she can never go back to the Human Realm nor is there anything left for her there now.
  • Superior Successor: Rikitatsu tells Luz that not only is she a worthy successor, but a far superior user of All For One, as it only took her the length of a summer vacation to do the one thing he could never do in my 150 years of living: Awaken the All For One Quirk.
  • Sympathy for the Hero: Even someone with a black heart like All For One is compelled to comfort Luz after her horrible experience at the Battle of Gravesfield leads her to break down into tears after its over, which is probably only altruistic thing he's done in over a century.
Rikitatsu: You’ve been through a lot. More than any child should have to go through.
  • That Man Is Dead: She has come to the conclusion that Luz Noceda died along with and her friends at summer camp and takes the name All For One suggests after arriving in the Boiling Isles: Toshiko Shigaraki.
In truth, she always knew, in the back of her mind that when she saw all of those whom she called friends dead, she too died that day. Luz Noceda had died, and in her place was Toshiko Shigaraki. A girl who had nothing but hate for those who killed her friends. Oh, sure, she paraded around the name Luz, but she hadn’t truly been Luz. She was just… taking her place, so to speak. Luz had died the day everyone else had. Toshiko merely wore her skin and stole her name. But now, she didn’t need that. She didn’t need her name anymore. She was in a different world, meaning she had no longer had to hang onto the past.
  • Tragic Keepsake: All For One flat out admits to himself that he didn’t care about the power that claiming One For All for himself would give him, implying he didn't need it to achieve his goals, but because it was a reminder of his long dead brother.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: After Eda discovered the Mutant Realm, King was captured by All For One for his Titan Blood. Even after she rescued him and returned home, he acquired the means to follow her back to the Boiling Isles and waged a 10-year long war that resulted in many casualties.
  • Using You All Along: All For One admits to himself that Luz was just a means to an end for his Evil Plan: To get to his world, have her steal One For All from All Might or his successor, and then pull a Villain Override her body and come back to life stronger than ever. With an evolved version of his Quirk, he would be unstoppable, and he could reclaim his empire from those who stole it.
  • Villain Has a Point: While he appears to be in Never My Fault mode, he's not wrong when tells Luz that the other villains had a more active role in ruining her life.
Rikitatsu: After all, it wasn’t me who made you go through that death camp. It wasn’t me who sent assassins after you. And it wasn’t me that destroyed your home. Those go to Maxwell, Wittebane, and The Golden Guard respectively.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Luz is genuinely touched and moved to tears when Shigaraki tells her he's proud her for awakening their Quirk.
Rikitatsu: I’m proud of you. You did the one thing that I could never do in life. And for that, I am thankful.
Luz: Proud… of me? Mama was the only one to have ever said that to me… and it was only once… When I got an A on a Spanish test in the fifth grade…
  • What Is This Feeling??: He has this moment when seeing Luz in emotional turmoil after her Trauma Conga Line makes him feel sympathy for her, instead of his just usual sadism. While he brushes off any real good in him as a malarkey, he feels himself genuinely starting to care about his successor for all the horrible stuff he was ultimately responsible for.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Yoichi's Last Words to his brother was that there was some good in him and that he only needed to act on it.
Yoichi: I’ve known, since the very beginning, that deep down there is a spark of good in you. It’s just buried deep within that hateful soul of yours. I know you’re better than this, Brother. We can both be better than this. So please, stop this! Stop doing what you’re doing. Stop hurting people, and help out! Don’t be cruel to the world just because it was cruel to us!
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good!: All For One recalls the time when his younger twin brother that could be better than a wannabe villain by using his Quirk to help to genuinely help other people instead of hurting them. It was a bunch of nonsense to the Evil Twin.
  • You Killed My Father: All For One personally killed Harvey Park, one of Willows dads.
  • You Remind Me of X:
    • Rikitatsu is initially confused about what to do as Luz breaks down crying into his chest until this situation reminds him of when his late brother Yoichi, one person who ever truly gave a damn about other than himself, did this when they were kids.
    • To Eda and Gilbert, Toshiko's appearance reminds them of All For one.
